Okay, this is kind of embarrasing, I'm a girl and I can't dance at all. I went to a dance last friday and my friends say that I just kind of sway from side to side. I just can't dance, grinding or general dancing. My first big homecoming dance is in about two weeks, and I really need some tips on dancing or on how to cover up my obvious failed attempts to dance.

2 weeks is a very short time. Your friends are right - for this case, just do that. Remember, most of the men there will not know what to do either - it's a common fault in our society today, that men don't learn to dance (altho it is the common practice in many countries around the world). So, don't stress - they are probably posting on this board too (if they have a clue).
After the big dance, or when college begins, you might try joining the dance team. You'll get info and training that you'll need.

I don't believe your friends are right!! Friend's aren't always right...It's a matter of if you believe what they say...Sometimes friends see something in you that will distract the opposite sex from them and may be a bit jealous of that potential. Therefore, you say you sway form side to side...Boxers like to sway from side to side..Try some discreet boxing movements with your sway. Kinda like moving your arms with the sway. That always looks attractive when I see a woman moving that way. [/i]

Gee, way back when, when I went to the junior prom, the senior ball AND a homecoming, all we did was sway! (Some actually bobbed up and down!!!)

Check out this website. It has a lot of video clips of different styles of dancing. I can't attest to any of the videos that I checked out the clips for, but it might give you some idea of what type of dance you'd like to learn:

All very good points, but you might want to consider finding a studio where you live and taking a group lesson or two. Most groups don't cost that much, and with just a few lessons you could be a much better dancer. Y'know, it's usually guys who get this "you can't dance" crap from their so-called friends. But I have a female friend whose boyfriend keeps telling her she can't dance, and I'm making it a point to bring her along to our studio's Friday nights whenever she is available, just to prove she can. Looking back on it, I now realize that most of the people who told me I couldn't dance, when I was your age, were people who didn't know the first thing about dancing themselves. So don't accept "get a clue" from clueless people.

Yup. Some people need to put others down to bring themselves up.

This may be of no help or relvance; and I'm too old to remeber what is what like when I was 20 yrs old:
but I do remeber going to a club with a college friend and she was doing all these amazing moves well we both were; I mean I just didn't care what other people around me thought. (who were mostly doing the zombie two step)
i discovered after that she was dancing ironically: ie she was parodying what other people were doing, but somehow it looked better than them.
Ok moral:1.
try to forget what others maybe thinking about you: only you and the person your dancing with count.
2.Mimicry is often a good place to start then make the movement your own.
3. Ignore the advice of boring old f****
