'Tis the season for ghosts and ghouls and things that go bump in the night!
Our studio has a costume party coming up and I'm trying to come up with ideas for a danceable hallowe'en costume! I figured I'd open it up to everyody here as well. Soooo....any ideas?

Well, I was going to say a "devil", but then someone will always be yanking your tail.

Last year I actually managed to dance in a full, Southern-belle hoopskirt. It was actually rather fun--I figured if they could do it back then, I could do it now!
Of course, that was my backup costume--the top I was wearing for my regular costume didn't allow for much arm movement, so holding up my frame was kinda difficult.

Gypsy works well, or belly dancer if you've got the body for it.
Leopard print and kitty face paint.
Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz is fun and relatively easy.
royalty (but that makes it hard to do any rhythm/latin)
french maid
hula dancer
playboy bunny
one year someone actually showed up as an exotic dancer.
for guys: zorro, skeleton, royalty

I was a (male) pirate last year.

We've got a pretty strong Navy presence in my hometown, and last year one of the Navy guys that dances at my old studio came as Popeye. It was fabulous--he looked just like him! Won the costume contest with it too!

I saw a funny one on TV the other day ... this lady was dressed all in pink and had a shoe on her head. She was a piece of gum! That was hilarious ... guess it only works if you think you can dance with a shoe on your head though ...

Phantom and Christine, or Carlotta and Ubaldo. I have the (shhh, don't tell anyone, it will destroy my "Paradigm O' Bitchiness" image) pink, ankle-length fluffy gown I have to trick out with lace and shiny things still, and the boyfriend ripped off part of a "Victorian Vampire" costume for the shirt, vest, and GOOD floor-length (almost) cape, we're awaiting a response from an ebay guy on a nasty old tux tailcoat we're bound to have to lysol and dryclean :D

More NOT danceable costumes:
Mermaid, you'll kill yourself tripping over the tail
Darth Vader, no peripheral vision
Mummy, ditto above
Big witch hats and brooms are dangerous too.
A friend went as Indiana Jones and the whip got in the way of dancing (o.k. I know the jokes are limitless here)
Anything with a sword
Siamese Twins (right, you'll just ask how to do it so I'll tell you: Sew two extra large white t-shirts together after removing the right side and sleeve of one and the left side and sleeve of the other, sew them together so there are 2 neck holes and 1 outter sleeve for each person to stick an arm through. You'll have to put your inner arms around the other person's waist. Standing side by side.
Wear matching jeans, shoes and ballcaps and figure out a shtick to finish each other's sentences and stuff like that. It's a blast, my sister and a friend did it one year and everyone loved it.)
I don't recommend drinking much beer in that costume unless you're really good friends with the person you're in the costume with and don't mind being in a bathroom stall together! Also, the person on the left shouldn't drink since they'll be driving unless you're in England then reverse that.

If the "twins" are followers of a good skill level, you could totally do this for WCS.
remember "The Karate Kid"? Ralph Machio dressed up like a shower. that was pretty cool!

You do know the reason the lady is offset to the man's right is that his sword would be slung on his left side, right?

I think witch costume would work. I bought this witch costume last year and it has a short dress with a flirty skirt (pretty much same type that I would wear for dancing) and striped tights (green/black) and a reasonable-sized hat with built-in green hair. No broom (they were sold separately and I didn't feel like I need one).
I'm considering a 20s flapper dress. Not very original but great to dance in :D
(Not sure where to buy one though...)

I want to be a southern Belle - still trying to decide if the hugh skirt with hoop will allow me to dance though. Has anyone tried that before?

You are witchy enough on your own? ;)

I want my dh and myself to go as Ward and June Cleaver. I just need the shirtwaist dress, the heels, the pearls and the plate of cookies. My dh would just have to wear a sweater an carry a pipe (he is not big on costumes, anyway, so that is the best I could probably get out of him!)

Pin a cuddly toy monkey to your shoulder and go as Gibraltar. Or go for a penguin / Falkland Islands.

BUT!!! I have been successful in finding my costume. I'm going to be a gypsy. :D I found a perfect skirt that will allow me to dance pretty much anything, should I choose to do so.
<- still taking it easy though...and going nuts in the process...

Or a vacuum cleaner. Could dance with the vacuum when my dh is tired.

Wasn't there a TV commercial a couple of years ago where Fred Astaire did just that...?
Was it Fred, or was it Gene Kelly?

Definitely Fred. They took the scene from Royal Wedding and replaced the hat rack with the vacuum cleaner. Gene Kelly was in a Diet Coke ad, dancing with Paula Abdul.

I would rather dance with Gene Kelly than a vacuum cleaner....except he is dead.

That was a sad, sad day...I cried when I heard the news. I'd have taken Gene Kelly over Fred Astaire any day too.

So our studio had its halloween party tonight. I wore my witch dress: http://www.geocities.com/tsmt1001/halloween_1_2005.jpg which worked pretty well, even with the hat.

Over here we dress up for carnival and not for Halloween. As for definitely not danceable costumes. A friend of mine went one year as tampon. He won first price for the costume. He had this crazy idea and I helped him making it. His girlfriend was mad at me for like 3 weeks for actually helping him with this.
