So... who saw it and what do you think?

i thought that it was good, i enjoyed it... but i also found it quite dis-joint. it didn't flow from one thing to another and took a lot of concentration to keep up with all the plot changes.

both my son and my wife (who read the book, i didn't) thought that there was too much cut out (as usual).

there were some scenes and subjects that i couldn't figure out why they were in the book and could have been left out for more informative things to help support the main plots.

comments anyone?

wow, you must've gone to the premier night! I don't think i'm going to see G&F for another week or so - the movie theatre will be jam packed with ppl!

But i wouldn't be surprised if they cut out a lot of the stuff.....

I took my mom to see it in IMAX on Sunday. We both enjoyed it, but I agree that some of it seemed pretty disjointed. We've both read the books, so we knew what was supposed happen, as well as what was going to happen.

What seemed out of place, dTas? Like I said, I was able to follow because I had read the books...I don't know if it would have been different had I not read them over the summer.

I can't wait to see this movie. Goblet of Fire is far the best book of the series. It's my favorite & I've read good critics' review on this one. It'd better not disappoint me - if they expect me to sit thru 2 hrs 30 min in that theater!

Now I read this book over 2 years ago...Probably won't remember much of the details. Hopefully I can follow!

I kind of agree with dTas about the disjointedness. I think that if you have not read the book, you will be a bit confuzled by the movie.

Nah I've read the book, so you won't spoil anything for me. Is this the same director that did the third movie because I was a little disappointed that one didn't follow the book as well as the other two.

Gabe, Angel and I loved the Goblet of Fire. Gabe has read the book however Angel and I have not. Gabe also felt that there were some things left out that shouldn't have been but he loved it just the same and has seen it twice so far.

Nope. A new director. This director did the 4 weddings & a funderal. He's British, as opposed to the other American directors (at least that's what the reviews said).

Now that I have seen the movie, I found it somewhat disjointed. The story kind of jumps from one event to another with much less connection than the book. I also feel that some things which were left out should have been there. But the visuals are great.

Actually I found the last HP movie to be just as disjointed...Since I haven't watched Goblet yet, I could only compare the other 3. I only really liked the 1st HP movie. The other 2 HP movies did not do the books any justice.

SPOILER ALERT. I may mention stuff in here you don't want to know before seing the movie. So read at your own risk...

As a Harry Potter fan I was disappointed in the movie, but will take what I can get.

I saw the movie over the weekend. They did an OK job of changing some of the plot lines to keep it semi-logical for those who hadn't read the book, but there was still too much material to cover in 2 1/2 hours. So it ended up being choppy, disjointed and, in my opinion, didn't give any time for character development. All the characters come across as two dimensional comic book characters rather than 3 dimensional beings in a fantasy story.

There is a lot of death in the fourth book as Voldemort makes his way back to human shape, and the movie just kind of skims over it. Maybe kids who have grown up on video games where someone dies-you start over won't be bothered by it, but it just seemed too shallow to me.

The scene where Mad Eye Moody tortures the spider with the three Unforgivable curses holds more emotional wallop than the two human deaths.

The murder of Bartie Crouch is there and then is gone (and the body is found in one of those disjointed scenes that make no sense unless you have read the book, and the body is visible because of the plot lines that had to be left out). The scene with Harry and Cedric's body returning to the grounds of Hogwarts seems forced.

The movie basically felt rushed to me, as if they had to hurry to get all the plot developments they needed into the 2 1/2 hour framework when they really needed 4 hours minimum.

Ralph Fiennes did a good job of Voldemort but again this scene felt really rushed so you couldn't get a good sense of just how evil the character really is.

It will be interesting to see how they handle the plot developments in the future movies, having left out so much of the fourth book.

I am looking forward to the fifth movie because the Weasley twins have such a major part in it. (Speaking of which, this movie didn't mention anthing about a money prize for winning the Triwizard cup, so I'm wondering how they are going to fund the Twins going into business in the fifth movie.)

Being a dancer, the Yule ball scene was amusing, with the partners changing lead and follow. (all 30 seconds of it)

Having seen the movie and read the 6th book I am wondering if Krum will be a major figure in the last book. This would have all three of the remaining Triwizard cup champions attempting to bring down Voldemort (Fleur is marrying Bill Weazley). Hermoine has been corresponding with him ever since, and his mentor was a former death eater and was killed for not coming back to the fold.

Ultimately, I think this book should have been broken into two movies. It wouldn't have been a shock to anyone who went to the Lord of the Rings movies. And any die hard Potter fan would spring for double movie tickets.

The trouble is that the books are getting longer, and the movies try to stay under 2 1/2 hours (maybe to make sure kids can sit through those movies?). Books #3 and #4 should have been 3 hour movies, really.

I wonder how old the kid actors are going to look for movies 5-7!

Does anyone know if there are plans for movies for all 7?

The actors are about 1-2 years older than the actual characters. Shouldn't be too hard to cast the same folks & be equally convincing.

Look at all the Junior/Senior these days, they look like adults anyway.

Book 5 will be hard to film...That was a book of details, laying groundwork for the rest. Pretty boring, IMHO...But w/o it, you can't proceed to filming the rest.

I'd agree that Goblet should have been broken into 2 films, even though I haven't seen it yet. The book was over 700 pages long! They could have done a long movie & have an intermission (like Gone w/ the Wind :))

I don't know of any other movie which has been done with an intermission, like Gone With The Wind. My guess that it never was popular format, even back when they made it, and now it would be even worse. I can't imagine coming to a movie and then taking a break in the middle. I'd be satisfied if they made Goblet of Fire 3 hour long, and included some of the omissions in that extra time, and then made an extended DVD edition, like they did with Lord of the rings movies.

Doctor Zhivago is one, unless my Mom's memory is failing. And The Sound of Music. I think intermissions used to be a lot more common than they are now.

I've seen Sound of Music on video, somehow I don't recall having an intermission mark there, or it being long enough to have to have one. But it's been awhile since I saw it. I haven't seen the other 2 movies you mentioned.

Yep. The Sound of Music had an intermission, when I saw it in the theater, many moons ago. I'm not sure if t was in the film or not. But there was definitely an intermission the first time I saw it. I was about seven, I think, and it was a revival (? way-beyond second run at a local movie theater) in the seventies.

I have the sound of music on 2 videos - i'm guessing the end of the 1st video is where the intermission was.

I was actually planning on going alone this weekend, but homework came up and I cancelled it. Nope, I have no prob with going to movies alone. Went to see LotR II on my own and had a blast. I just thought I could find someone to go with me, I like having company. Looks like I might go on my own in the end. *shrug*

IIRC, Ghandi was another with an intermission.

I remember seeing Lawrence of Arabia in a theater when it was re-released in the late 80's/early 90's. The scenery was stunning. The one drawback from the experience was that while all the on-screen characters were suffering from the heat and dying of thirst, all of the moviegoers were shiverring from the cold of an over-exuberant AC system in the summertime...

Absolutely Brilliant! I loved it. The first 15 min might have been a bit rushed & choppy, but it was easy to follow nevertheless.

Now that I've seen it, I like it the way it is. Perhaps it should have been another 5-10 minutes longer to make it less choppy, but I don't think it'd be necessary to make it into 2 movies.

The condensed version is just right for the movie goers.

I think this is the best screen adaptation out of the 4 movies.

You don't feel comfortable going alone?

I go to see films alone whenever I feel like it. It's great if you have people to go with, but going alone doesn't bother me. Anyway, it's usually the art-house cinemas I frequent (I like to watch foreign films, particularly Spanish or Latin American ones to help practise my Spanish), and they tend to be much less busy than the mainstream cinemas. So not so much chance of sitting next to a pervert! :D

Yeah. From what I can read of your online personality, I didn't think you'd have a problem with going it alone. But I didn't want to make any hasty judgments. (Notice the absence of emoticons in my post? ) A lot of people just don't like going to the cinema on their own. To each his/her own, I guess. :)
