I wanna hear the leaders opinions on this:

I have about three feet worth of hair, down to my butt. how much do you leaders hate long hair? And would you rather I had it up in a pony tail to whack you in the face,(but you can reach my back), or have it all down so it won't hurt you (but reaching my back is a problem), or have it in this enormous bun that impedes some moves especially in salsla such as a duck?

That's a tough question. I used to dance fairly often with a woman who's hair was down to her but. When you do it often avoiding the ponytail is no problem. If you don't dance with women with long hair often...OWW...OWW...OWW!!

Right on youngsta.

Used to be a big deal for me. I was petrified of engaging the OWW factor! Now however, it's not so bad as I am getting used to the long hair.

If you don't want to risk pain the bun or tight ponytail is the safest option for you. [/quote]

Hey guys! I'd have to confess that I belong to the long hair clan as well
In the past I had received nothing but compliments on my hair (down to my butt right now) but recently a couple of guys (kinda newbies) have told me that they are not sure what to do with my hair  in the way.
As Bouncy, I had tried both the ponytail (hit the guys in the face) and the bun (comes undone as soon as I do one of those over-head moves)
Guess I am due for a hair cut.....!
On the other hand, some guy at a club BEGGED me to whip him with my hair   just the other day!
But seriously, would you guys stop dancing with a girl because of long hair? Or you would just avoid a few moves?

I know one guy who makes a beeline for girls with long hair, the longer the better. He grabs them for salsa in particular and loves doing dips, particularly those ones from one hib to the other, just to watch their hair sweep across the floor. I don't see it myself, but different strokes for different folks, eh. :)

It must be a boy thing.

Oooooh :P I LOVE having that done to me.....!
I love dips especially when the leader is smooth..... and when I come up, my hair flip forward & covers the guy briefly before I flick it back...!

I wouldn't stop dancing with a person because of their long hair. [Bad breath, a nasty attitude...these are turn offs, but long hair, tall, fat, skinny, white, black, pregnant, young, old...no way!!!]

Would I only do what I feel I am comfortable with? Yesss!!! If it means fewer moves now, it is a fewer moves. I can live with that, but can you?

My personal preference is ponytail... I've become used to blinking and/or turning my head in accordance with what move I'm leading... and it only looks silly when I keep doing it with short haired partners.

Some years ago I danced country two-step with a woman was was just about my height in her dance shoes. Two-step typically involves lots of spins. Combine that with shoulder-length hair and I found myself suffering the weed-whacker effect. Fortunately few women are that tall :-)

LOL! The first time I wore a hair piece, I had a major up-do. (Does everybody know what that means? My hair was pinned up in an elaborate style.) Anyway, right in the middle of my exhibition routine, my teacher, who was only about an inch taller than I, bopped me, right in the middle of my hairpiece, and down it came!   Fortunately for me, I'd had enough performance experience that I knew things go wrong, so I just kept dancing. what a laugh!!!! ( At least the hair stayed attached. It was hanging way down my back, LOL, but it didn't fall off!

One thing you can do with long hair is braid it and then pin the braid to your dress somewhere. Competitive Latin dancers were doing this for a while, not sure if it's still in fashion or not.

I suppose it depends on the type of dancer you are whether it causes a problem or not. A friend of mine has hair down to her butt, but it isn't a problem because she doesn't spot when she turns to create the whip action with her hair.

I on the other hand got mine cut to shoulder length because I felt really guilty about hitting my instructor all the time!

My girlfriend's hair is intensely long, which is really great for me, I dig on it, but it drives her nuts. She's got the whole bun-making thing down to a routine that barely takes a moment, but it still annoys her having to rebuild it after almost every dance.

Yay, long hair! I've got hair down to the bottom of the small of my back, and I have plans to grow it further! (If I can that is... I really want a braid that hangs below my butt; but I'm not sure if my genetics will let me grow my hair down that far! *crossing her fingers* I hope they do!)

I try to put my hair up into a tight bun so that I don't hit anyone; because if I put it into a pony tail (high or low), it'll still go for my lead's face. It has a tendency to eat people... It prefers small children though!   I'd like to leave it down occasionally though; putting it into those buns and pony tails can be bad for the hair; causes breakage and split ends...  :?

I may be a tomboy, but that doesn't mean I don't love my hair! 8)

I dated someone who had lovely long hair once, and made sure she knew how much I liked it. She went home for Christmas vacation and came back with a major haircut. I expressed shock, dismay... and she pulled the hair, bundled into a cylinder, out of her suitcase and handed it to me.

It was a great teaching moment. I had what I wanted so badly, so how could I complain any longer?

Yes. I never have understood that. Why are men so stringent about keeping a WOMAN's hair long? But a lot of them are.

Not to minimize any of this, but when I want long hair, I buy it and have it woven in. Otherwise, I keep myself comfortable. I've never had a boyfriend who was emotionally invested either way. What's that about? I really woud like to know, as I'm in boyfriend-hunting mode LOL!

Laura

You never know what a guy will go for. My college boyfriend liked my hands. My husband likes my hair. If you're serious about the boyfriend-hunting thing, then find a style that makes you feel like flirting. A favorite author of mine once wrote that it's impossible to flirt if you're having a bad hair day! And if you can't flirt, then the next step of meeting a boyfriend is also impossible.

BBW, the other thing, from the other dancers' point of view, is that long hair can be bloody annoying!

I've got relatively long hair myself. It's just past my shoulders so it's nowhere near as long as some people, but there are some women who whip around forgetting that while their partner/boyfriend might be enjoying it, the other girls getting whipped by it aren't so impressed.

I was almost blinded once by this woman who whipped around in a Viennese Waltz. Then there was the time I saw a woman's hair getting stuck in her partner's watch while they did some complicated salsa move... and, of course, from a martial arts perspective, long hair is one more weopon an enemy can use against you! LOL

I have very long hair, I can just about sit on it.

It has taken me years to develop an effecient method for teaching, practicing and social dancing. Leaving it loose it absolutely not a option. When a guy goes to take hold and he gets a handful of hair it is disruptive, especially in Smooth as I move in and out of closed hold continually. Everythig comes to a screeching halt... Also my hair tends to get caught in watches, buttons, or any other peices of adormnent that my partner or students wear, or blinds me when I spin, not to forget the already accounted for "whack factor".

I used to pull it back and just do a sort of bun everyday for work. I have a ton of hair, very fine, but a ton of it. If I put it in a bun I have to use so many hair pins and pin it so tight, I ended up getting headaches, not to mention I lost quite a bit of hair around my forehead one summer.

Now I just braid it and wrap the elastic around the top of my bra strap. Once I had tried pinning it to my shirt, what Laura just mentioned, but it was way too annoying, the weight of my hair kept yanking my shirt all over. My way, the braid sits nicely across my shoulder and never moves. Most people have no idea it is attatched to anything and are amazed that I can fly all over and my hair just sits there.

Mine's down to my butt and thick as a mop, meaning it's hot as hell if I wear it down for salsa. (A 2-towel evening!) The latinos say they love it but the salseros sometimes start to whine( to which I say "Then don't spin me so damn many times!")...

I've had the same problems - my hair reaches down to my butt and if I leave it loose I just get way too hot. I often put it in a high pony tail and if the guy I'm dancing with gets whipped in the face I tuck it under my bra strap for that dance. I always thought that it depended on the height of the guy as to whether or not my hair would be a problem, but it seems that there are techniques you use to avoid the whip!

The best hair style I have found, however, is 2 low braids. That way when I spin around I only strangle myself! I like this style the best as it's cute and it helps me balance when I spin!

What I do somethimes if I want a short, high pony tail is first braid my hair in a low braid down my back (leaving the end untied). Then I pull the braid up and clip it near the top of my head where I want the pony tail to start. I then tie a ribbon or scrunchy around the clip and the 'doubled-over' pony tail hides the braid at the back of my neck. This way I get a nice pony tail but am no danger to my partners :D

 I suppose it does sound strange

What I meant is that when I wear my hair like that, it can only be annoying to me rather than my partner; the braids can wrap themselves around my neck if I spin very fast. It's an odd feeling, but not as uncomfortable as being whipped in the face by a pony tail, I should imagine! :D

Speaking from the "spear side" (opposite of "distaff side" http://www.yaelf.com/aueFAQ/mifwhtppstdstffsd.shtml ), I would first say that I do understand that longer hair can present many problems including overheating (a very definite problem in Lindy and, I've heard, in Salsa). Second, I wish to assure you that I'm not gloating over being able to wear my own hair "high and tight" -- longer than a crew-cut, but still much too short to acknowledge the ministrations of a comb.

I do not tend to "have a thing" for a particular length of hair on a woman. I do feel a bit uncomfortable at first going into dance position when her hair hangs down her back, but that it because I'm afraid of pinning her hair there and so causing it to pull and so cause her discomfort. However, this does not seem to remain a problem once the dance actually starts.

As for long hair whipping around and hitting me in the face when she turns, I can see it coming so I protect myself by keeping my mouth and eyes closed during that instant. If anything, I kind of enjoy it, but only because of the *******ing cool breeze it generates, not because of any innate kinkiness (at least I hope not!).

Among the options for wearing your hair up, I don't think I've seen mention of using a scarf to help hold it in place. One girl in class is always dressed in a 40's/50's retro style and keeps her hair up in that manner. Or is that simply not fashionable?

Trying to keep this 'equal' and not directed at any DF members :D what about you ladies? Have you ever danced with a guy with a ponytail? Did it get in the way, like guys complain about ladies?

(As an aside, it always amazes me how some guys have such gorgeous hair  what on earth do they need it for/do with it? It is not like if some 'caveman' is going to grab them by the hair and throw them over their shoulder now, is it   )

I've danced some WCS with a guy who had about shoulder-length hair. However, he was about two or more heads taller than I was, so it was no problem!   (Seriously, I didn't even come up to his shoulders! :? Way to rub my short-ness into my psyche, huh? )
Personally, I'm rather fond of longer hair on guys, but many men either don't try for the long hair, or it just doesn't look right on them, so I'm content with short hair. :D I'm not picky, guys are my buddies. (In a good way, of course!**)

To your aside, Pacion, it's true! So many of my guy friends have this awesomely soft, shiny hair, and they don't even TRY for it!!! And I have to do all this work to keep my long, thick hair from being *consumed* by the stupid split ends I cause by all my ponytails and twist-buns... :x Not fair... And while no caveman is going to come for them and grab them by their hair, it is entirely plausible that a gaggle of women should come along, tie them up, whisk them away to a secret laboratory, and try to unlock the secret of their luxurious hair! 8)

My hair is very long as well. For ballroom and swing, this is what I do.

1. Put slightly damp hair into a ponytail located around the middle of the back or the head or slightly lower (closer to the neck).
2. Braid ponytail all the way to the bottom (sometimes, incorporating smaller braids, ie braid each of the three sections before doing the final braid, helps in keeping it all in). Put an elastic at the bottom.
3. Wrap braid around and around the base of the ponytail making sure to tuck the elastic under a coil of hair.
4. Take several neutral colored elastics and band them around the coil or braids.
5. Insert 5-7 strategically placed bobby pins around the base of the coil for good measure.
6. A spritz of hair spray will typically lock any fly aways in.

This normally stays up all night and I have very thick hair. It has withstood 4 hours of ECS, a night of ballroom, and evenings of salsa/merengue.

Good luck ladies...

What about the hair pieces? Has anyone tried those?

We had one of the more advanced dancers recently do a performance with a hairpiece. She hadn't even worn it to dress rehearsal so it was the first time she had danced with a sizeable mop of hair. She covered it up quite well, but you could tell she wasn't quite balanced and she nearly lost some costuming over her head because her hair was so heavy. Her lead wasn't all that bothered by it because he was used to others with long hair. The main affect was on her.

What about the hair pieces? Has anyone tried those?

I have one but only wear it occasionally. It all started because I wanted Afro micro braids but it would cost too much for my hair (I have a lot of hair & very long at the time), plus, my hair grows way too fast, the maintenance would be too expensive too.

So I found this piece like a big ponytail with micro braids & some thick, soft curls beneath it. It's a shade darker than my natural colour but it was the only thing that would hide my whole mop!

It takes a while to put on (main job was to hide my own hair) but once on, it's relatively secure. I've done some serious salsa with it on (Casino style with lots of over-head tricks too!) & it was fine.

The only drawback is that I get a pretty sore scalp where the bobby pins were :x .......

(I will dig around for photos)

Thought i should join in as i have been browsing for a while.
I'm a member of the long hair club - i sit on mine. Its very fine and flyaway. I have to say that i never dance with it down or in a ponytail as i alwats end up strangling myself or flicking my partner in the face.
I always put it up in a bun, twisted tightly round and held in pplace with 4 pins - it lasts all night. The trick is to twist and twist the hair as you wrap it round itself.

IJust a quick funny story:- I was having a lesson once, after duly putting my hair up in a bun for the lesson, the teacher asked me to take my hair down into a ponytail and proceeded to dance with me, whilst pulling my hair back to get the right sort of lean and shape out for a ballroom hold!!!

My hair is almost halfway down my back, but *extremely* thick. I can't dance with it down, ever. It gets in my face, makes it hard for me to spot, gets really messy, and makes me hot to boot. It's so thick, though, that ponytails don't stay in. The heaviness of the hair pulls it right out. If my ponytail does stay in for a whole song, it's killing my partner everytime I turn. I have to take a couple heavy-duty hair bands, wrap 'em a few times around a ponytail, then take another one or two and give myself a little 'bobbed' ponytail. It keeps it mostly off my neck, it's short enough to not hit my partner in the face, and the multitude of strong hair bands usually keeps it it in place.

Oh, I feel for you! My hair's soooo thick, I *have* to use those really tight buns or it just falls out on me. Of course, eventually it tries to come out, so I have to redo it.

In Japan you can buy a 2-foot long length of hairband-like material. I cut it a size to accommodate my substantial ponytail. You just tie the ends together in a knot, which can be hidden under the ponytail. It's perfect all the time 'cause it's neither too loose or too tight! :D

My hair is also halfway down my back and very thick. Visibility is a problem as you say, and although I leave my hair down, I need to use a hair band or clip to keep it off my face. When I don't want my hair to be messy (my hair is curly and its volume seems to double after a night of dancing), I use a bow clip with hair net attached to it.

gosh, this was such a long thread to read! :?
i didnt want to start a new thread on hair, so i ll continue here.

all the ladies offered a lot of good ideas about what to do with long hair that whips, gets caught in things, and blinds. while they are awesome suggestions, (and you all must have beautiful faces to do this), i cant sport a braid or ponytail or a bun. i look horrible in them!!
i know that sounds really vain and superficial, but i want to feel as good as the next person while im dancing.

but lately, since my hair is getting longer and longer, it keeps getting caught in those watches and inner elbows ( yep, inner elbows).
and my hair is getting yanked off little by little. i end up with all this breakage. and the ends generally look thinner.
i wasnt blessed with thick hair like some of you, so its not very strong...
so heres my question: is there no hope for me?

btw, at this moment, im contemplating the ultimate solution...chopping it off!

It's been my routine to have a big chop every 2-3 years (from middle-of-back length to above neck -- yeah I mean BIG chop ), but this time I decided against it and only took about 20 cm off because of my dancing.

I have the sort of thick curling hair that explodes and doubles in volume when mixed with moisure (e.g. sweat) and movement, especially when it's short and not weighed down by its length. It's much easier to manage when long -- I can just tie it back or roll it up at the nape and tuck in a hair net, although frequently I don't and just wear a hairband of a sort to keep it off my face. I also use my hair as a deterrent -- spin me and risk getting your face whipped!

First, my lead-centric $0.02 on the subject of this thread: I LOVE getting a mouthful of hair when dancing. The longer the better. The darker the better, blonde simply doesn't do it for me. :)

Now, reality check:
but lately, since my hair is getting longer and longer, it keeps getting caught in those watches and inner elbows ( yep, inner elbows).
and my hair is getting yanked off little by little. i end up with all this breakage. and the ends generally look thinner.
Don't even get me started on those stupid plastic wristbands they put on you at congresses and some clubs--if you think hair caught in a watch is OWW! can you imagine what an earring yanked out must feel like!? Grr.

So, trying hard not to be a hypocrite, and since I buzz-cut my hair 'cause it's a friggin' nuisance at more than half an inch, I'd say, vanity aside, a girl outght to keep hers not longer than comfortable. But guys definitely fall for long hair, it's just the way our puny chicken brains are wired up. So if sexy is what you're aiming for let it grow, and don't be shy about asking guys to take off their watches when dancing with you, it's a negligible sacrifice on their part methinks.

As for how to keep it tidy, buns and clips and ponytails work fine, just don't use those stylish japanese wooden sticks to hold the bun, those HURT! :o

My favorite hair accessory is a concorde clip: http://www.hairboutique.com/tips/tip903.htm (scroll about 3/4 of the way down, it's black). I twist my hair up into a french twist then I shove the clip down the center of the twist and I'm all set. I usually get it in there deep enough that only the very top shows and I haven't yet had anyone get hung up on it in a turn. Sometimes I leave a little fluff of hair (or spiky fringe) out the top, sometimes I tuck it all in. I think you can get them at mall accessory stores. I prefer metal over plastic, they stay in better.

BTW, I bet you look just fine with your hair up. We are always more critical of ourselves than others are of us.

D'oh! Figures I'd inadvertently insult most of the follows in Scotland with such a comment. Note to self: do not type while drunk on dancing.

Backpedaling quickly, that was a sarcastic comment referring to the rather sad fashion whereby many gorgeous brunettes feel the need to dye their hair blonde lest they be insufficiently sexy. Well, follows in Scotland come in many shades, from blonde to auburn to pure black. My hair is long AND dark (though not as black as it used to be) -- I was referring to my wearign my hair down when dancing in the hope of putting guys of spinning me too much... obviously it won't work for all guys

It's true that many young brunettes choose to go blonde because it's considered sexy and attracts male attention (which is true -- when a girl I know went blonde, she immediately noticed the difference). It's also true that many not-so-young-any-more brunettes choose to go blonde when grey hair starts to show. When colouring grey hair, a lighter shade somehow looks more natural than your natural colour (I've been told this is something to do with the change in skin tone that also happens at the same time). Grey is VERY noticeable when you are naturally dark haired and makes you look VERY old -- which is why I dye my hair (not blonde, but certainly a lighter shade than my natural colour).

My hair is about mid back length. I cannot stand to have it open while dancing because it just gets to hot. The problem is that my hair is very thick, heavy and very sleek, so that all kinds of hairthings won't stay in the hair. However I found a way to fix my hair when I go dancing. First I do a ponytail, then tease (I'm not sure if this is the right word, found it in the dictionary) the hair heavyly. After that I twist it into a loose bun and fix it with a three pronged chignon pin. Around the whole thing I put an elastic with a flower. At the end I only fix some single strands with bobby pins and put lots of hairspray. All of this doesn't take me 5 minutes and usually it holds a whole night of salsa dancing. I like that look becuse it looks less austere as a tight bun.

My hair is naturally dark brown, but I've dyed it just about every color but blonde . . . black, natural-ish red, crayon-red, blue, green, purple, lighter brown, and various combinations of the above. Currently it's a nice sedate kind of light reddish-brown. :)

Considering my skin tone, dark brown eyebrows, and really not-blonde personality, I just don't see blonde in my future. :rocker: :)

Long hair is fun to play with. I get to brush it out of the way to get my hand on my partner's back, and of course I never succeed the first time so I have to do it 2 or 3 times. Sometimes there is not time so then I have to hold on to her back through the hair which requires extreme delicacy. Besides which I like the look!

Oh, wow. This is one cool thread. Oldie but goldie. :D
I'm growing my hair, want it to reach my waist. What I do with it so far (though it's only an inch below shoulder length and it's giving me a hard time) is make a very steady bun. I use LOTS of bobby pins, on a good day 12-15. I had my hair done for a showcase a couple of weeks ago and afterwards I took off all the bobby pins: we had used 59. It gave me one heck of a headache.
I recently heard of a new trick for buns if you have long hair: you braid your hair (not french braid, just a simple one) and then turn the braid round and round in a helix shape (using the previous elastic band as your centre) as tight as you can. Then you take a very tight scrunchie and tie it around it. I know someone who swears by it. Has anyone tried it?

Hmmm...this thread got revived out of nowhere...

My AT teacher's hair is about as long as mine--somewhere between chin and shoulder length--and we have the same problems with it.

A couple of months ago we could pull it back but there were these pieces on the sides that wouldn't stay tucked in the elastic. It was kind of annoying in close embrace because it meant I kept getting pieces of hair poking me in the face--I hated it when it would tickle my nose or get in my eyes. There was nothing he could do about it that he wasn't already doing (tying it back). Although, one time he wore it down and I did have to ask him to pull it back--it was just RIGHT THERE in my face. Since he's taller than me, my hair wasn't a problem.

Now, though, our hair is getting longer and when we get into close embrace there's that moment of--position arm, damn! end of ponytail caught underneath arm, either pull head forward to free hair or reposition arm under the ponytail.

When I took a smooth lesson with him one time, my ponytail became a pretty effective way for him to correct/maintain my head position without having to move his right hand. He just grabbed and held onto my hair so that I had to keep my posture. Annoying, but it worked.
