Are we talking a spin that's being led, or just solo without a lead? Also, are we talking on one foot only, or with paddling/little steps in between?

Look up the thread "Improving technique" - tsb, David, azzey and others gave some good tips. there are lots of other threads perhaps list and make them sticky?
quick tips: prep, spot, hook the fingers, relax the arms, shoulder/chest up, buy a spin video :P
for me lead spins *can be* unlimited as long as I get a decent prep and continuing impulse. the most I recall doing recently is 8 - but why would you regularly need that many?? most leads do 2 or 3, to match the musical phrasing (?) I definitely have a habit of resisting 'un-even' moves that have nothing to the music like inserting 5 spins just for the heck of it....heh
for free spins, I can do 4.5 without paddling given momentum to my resistance (from the 'cabbage patch' position). I stop myself as I hear it in the music, or when the lead grabs me; so I usually do 1.5-2.5 of these
I rarely do self-induced solo spins, unless it feels right (to music). I prefer body movement and shines

I will do a self-induced solo spin as part of shines. But in that case, I stop at one!
I hadn't heard of "cabbage patch", before, Africana. From googling it I've found out it's a dance. Do you mean the sort of bent-kneed, arms-bent-at chest-level position that I've been taught to adopt while spinning? (In a solo spin, that is.)
Thanks for the information about the other spinning thread! :D

The way I've been taught to spin is on one foot only. Maybe that's why I can't get up to a great number without losing my balance. I'm sure the paddling would help to keep you balanced.
Maybe I should try it. But then again, when in class you've got to do what the instructor tells you...
And as Africana says, how many spins do you need, anyway?

no not that cabbage patch (hahahaa! that'd look funny), I'm talking about that move where the lead is facing away from the girl while she's doing a cross body, but instead just completing the cross body she can either put her hands up and spin (he tugs her waist to give the impetus) or she puts her left hand into his right, with which he spins her out.
Any leads have a better name/description for this move?? I thought it was called the 'cabbage patch' :?:
At any rate, there are other similar postions from which the lead can free spin the follower by pulling back on her hand - this type of spin tends to be pretty fast, and depending on how well you spot, you can achieve several sharp spins without needing to paddle

Some terminology just doesn't cross the Atlantic!

i thought i could do 4... then i rememered an experiment with a really great lead: 28 continuous....

Yes, there is. :D
I think I can do around 2-3 spins on my own. Spotting, correct frame and tight core are the keys in spinning, IMO.

With two different partners, I've managed about 100 and 75 respectively, but after the first 30 or so I was just torquing them around and it was ripping my arm apart. But they wanted a personal record or something so we did it for fun, and I had to carry them for a bit after.
On my own, I've managed about 5 just once. I usually can do 2 decently, but I fail them sometimes anyway. I haven't been able to do 3 properly for a long time now :(

I can do 2 (on my own, obviously - I am a leader) - I have done 3 by accident on a very slippery floor - tried to stop too late!
One of the local teachers told me that Edie the salsa freak helped her lern how to spin at a congress - in a toilet cubicle. You get bruised elbows, but apparently it teaches you good technique!

I'm really bad at spinning, think I can do 1,5.
The most spins for the follower in a move that I do is 3, so you don't need to be able to do more than that.
