Well, I've been asked to teach a Lindy Hop workshop this weekend, and it's been a while since I've done this. I started with the Savoy style back in around 1999, and then it seemed that the Hollywood style started to dominate a couple of years later (here in Atlanta). Anyone want to venture a guess on which type of Lindy Hop in most popular right now?

No. But I bet you could start a long and crackling thread over on Yehoodi by asking there. Especially if you identify yourself as a ballroom dancer :-)

Good one jon :D

I've never really understood the difference between Savoy and Hollywood style, and I've even heard some international teachers say there is no real difference.

Anyway, from what I've seen the characterstic forward leaning and big moves are not done very much any more, and from what I hear when talking to people, dancing like Kevin and Carla is much more prefered than dancing like the Hralem Hotshots.

Wether or not the popular style is Hollywood or not, I can't say, but it doesn't seem to be very Savoy style to me.

In Europe (and possibly in some parts of America) a lot of dancers don't know which of they dance, because they are not familiar with the difference. My experience is that it's hard to say which is more popular. I think Hollywood 8-count is easier to understand, and so should be easier to teach. In practice, I think most people develop their own individual style after a while.

I think that is definitely the answer. Most people are just doing some sort of conglomeration, popularly known as "Savollywood" in my neck of the woods :D

In Oregon WC Swing infiltrates in too, as does Blues dancing, so you see the basics with a wide variety of style/embellisments.
