Good evening!

Just had to share...last night I had the FANTASTIC opportunity to perform belly dance for the very first time!!!!! And it was SUPER!!!!

I attended an all day dance workshop (my aching muscles today...) where we learned a five minute Egyptian belly dance to the song Talalik by Hakim. Our instructor (and dance choreographer) was Angelika Nemeth...who is absolutely beautiful and incredibly talented.

After our full day of dancing, learning new moves, and finding muscles we didn't even know existed...we had an opportunity to perform. The belly dance troupe I am a part of "Anwar El Shamal," which means "Northern Lights," has been practicing a dance FOREVER and last night we finally got to perform it! It was soooo much fun and such a rush!

Well, that pretty much covers the performance part of this post...now on to accountablity. After much thought a yesterday's full day of dance, I have decided I would really like to further enhance my belly dance skills and really hone the artform. Out of all the dance I've tried and the ones I currently dance, I really LOVE belly dance. It takes me to a place outside myself where I forget all my troubles, pass through all my stress, and just let loose. I can do it in a large group or entirely alone...just about anywhere.

Accountablity...I want to start practicing for at least a half an hour everyday (starting slow and want to work up to a full hour in the AM and another full hour in the PM). I have several guided videos to help me along, but what I really need is to be held accountable. Big favor...can someone from this group of dedicated dancers, please help me stay accountable with occassional emails and/or private messages just to follow up on how the progress it coming. If it's not coming along, please offer support, encouragement, or a good swift kick in the... to get me moving.

Thanks in advance as I know I can always count on the DF family!

Thank you! I knew I could count on the DF family!

I am ashamed to report, now one week later than this post I have yet to begin my workout routine. On the other hand, I have been unimaginably busy with work and activities...

Last week:
Monday - Car searching and recovery from dance workshop
Tuesday - Bible study (was originally supposed to be Monday)
Wednesday - left for a work conference in Las Vegas...kind of got some exercise as we walked a good portion of the Strip.
Thursday - still at conference...walked from the Mirage hotel to the Lexor in only two hours while seeing all the hotels in between...trust me, this definately counts as exercise!!!
Friday - return from Vegas about 11:00 p.m.
Saturday - early to rise and late to bed for an ALL DAY concert
Sunday - catching up on life I've missed for the past week...including spending time with the sweetheart, emails, DF boards, etc.

Tomorrow morning...the workout begins!!! :D

Okay...I must be honest and say I am NOT being very accountable. Today is Wednesday, my workout plan was supposed to be in full swing by this past Monday...and I have only done a tiny little bit of exercise...crunches, bicycle twists, and leg raises last night before bed.

I really need a good kick in the butt to get my booty movin! Help!!!! I need some exercise motivation.

What gets you up and moving? How do you stay committed to working out?

Hi DDD,

I think several books could be (and hundreds have been) on this subject. It reminds me greatly of when I used to be really overweight and made a point to lose it, which I did, 100+ pounds. People ask me all the time, what did I do, how did I do, etc etc, and while there are many things I learned and can share that have worked for me, I will say it boils down to one detail:

DESIRE!

This is the single most important aspect that most people never get to, YOU HAVE TO REALLY WANT IT! From what you've said in your posts, you've already got that, which is good. But, this is a two edged sword...for with this desire, you must cultivate your plan of action. Then, goal setting...this can be done with a lot of meditation, visualation, whatever works for you. See yourself where you'd like to be several months from now, and then don't stop until you get there, or somewhere even past that. And if the goal is that important to you, LET NOTHING STAND IN YOUR WAY! We can make up many excuses for what prevents us from working out, but the only real excuse, is ourselves.

From what little I know of you, I've gleaned that you are a very avid dancer and have learned many styles from lots of practice...so you know about discipline. If this helps, I'll share a little bit of what my workout schedule used to be like some years ago when I was in full training mode. Keep in mind, I was a NUT...and although this is for MA practice, I think it could apply to dance or anything else:

5:30 am - Rising, 20 minutes of focused meditation, some tea and a bit to eat.
6:00 am - Begin Tai Chi work out - Usually for about one hour, standing meditation practice, forms, Qi Gong basics.
7:00 am - Pushups (60-80+ on knuckles, fingertips, and wrists), Sit Ups/Crunches (several hundred)
7:30 am - Leave for the beach dressed in my Gi (Karate Uniform).
7:45 am - Running barefooted on the beach - 2-4 miles
9:00 am - Kata and technique practice. Punches, kicks, wave punching (hitting actual waves, great fun). Again, in the sand. Usually I'd do this for 1-2 hours.

That would take care of the first part of the day...and in the evening, usually stretching to wind down and other strengthening exercises. Some days I'd do more, other days a bit less, but my workouts were always consistant. Training in the sand gave me lots of balance and agility, and some nights I'd go straight from one dojo to the other for my classes. I'm only listing this because it shows how dedicated I was to my MA training...I literally breathed, ate and slept it. But the results I achieved...made it all worthwhile. :)

If you want a super boost of inspiration, I suggest you go take a look at Jack LaLannes website...that guy is a human dynamo! Just reading about what he and his wife have done should get you motivated. Its one of the best motivaters I can think of!

Good luck!!!

Best,

SG

What gets you up and moving? How do you stay committed to working out?

Hi Miss Dance,

For me, it's not just the passion and pleasure that comes from dancing, it's also competition. I see my competition and I know I'm can be just as good, if not better. I hate losing and I hate dancing below what I am capable of. Everyday, I am either dancing or working out to improve my dancing. In addition, me and my partner work with demanding coaches who demand every bit of us and acknowledge when we make improvement. In addition to that, I make it a point to be as good as I can so I can help others.

One very powerful thing you can do for yourself is to take a few moments and really be honest with yourself. What will life be like a year from now if you don't do these things? What will it be like 5 years from now? What about 10? What will your body be like? How will you feel about yourself? Will you one day become too exhausted to finish a routine? Will you become severely injured? One day, your dancing may come to an end. Will you have any regrets? Be brutally honest and really drive home the pain this will mean.

After you fully feel the regret and the loss, do this. What will life be like if you do take action? What will it be like 5 years from now? What about 10? What will your body be like? How will you feel? Will you be praised for your skill? Will people ask you for advice? How much more will you enjoy dancing? How much longer will you keep dancing at a high level? Will you have any regrets after your dancing days are done?

There will always be a reason why something can't be done. There are 24 hours in a day, surely your body and your health is worth at least one of them. I would also suggest you POST here more often so EVERYONE can see your progress and you can inspire others to stretch themselves. This advice will be totally useless if you do not TAKE ACTION NOW. You are responsible for your life and your happiness. If you let life control you, it will.

back to lurking...

I got a kick out of this because I compared it to my own schedule:

BEGIN QUOTE:
5:30 am - Rising, 20 minutes of focused meditation, some tea and a bit to eat.
6:00 am - Begin Tai Chi work out - Usually for about one hour, standing meditation practice, forms, Qi Gong basics.

9:00 am - Kata and technique practice. Punches, kicks, wave punching (hitting actual waves, great fun). Again, in the sand. Usually I'd do this for 1-2 hours.
END QUOTE.

5:45 am - Try to remember how coffee maker works with brain still asleep.

8:00 am - Get to work.
12:30 pm - Try to wolf down sandwich and get to bank in the half hour allotted for lunch.
1:00 pm - Get back to work.
4:00 pm - Leave work to get daughter from school.
4:30 pm - Take daughter to piano lessons, Brownies, soccer practice, etc.
6:00 pm - Take daughter back to apartment to play Ratchet & Clank until ex-wife arrives.
6:30 pm - Ex-wife arrives, a little catching up about our days, everyone leaves.
6:45 pm - Girlfriend now home from work, catch up with her.
7:15 pm - Get ready to go swing dance, eat dinner, movie, etc.
8:00 pm - Leave for swing dancing, dinner, movie, etc.
10:30 pm - Get home from swing dancing, dinner, movie, etc.
11:30 pm - Think about doing that laundry.
11:45 pm - Too tired for laundry, catch end of Futurama.
12:00 am - Good Family Guy on, so stay up for that.
12:30 am - Go to bed with girlfriend.
1:30 am - Got to sleep (you know what I'm saying.)

Making tea is easier than working the coffee maker. Without that extra drain on your energy first thing in the morning, you too might feel like punching waves.

Ah, the days of youth! I was only 20, single and had taken a year off of school. Still, I'm just a person that likes to keep busy...these days I only set aside an hour or two for exercise and mediation. :)

What about dancing -- not considered exercise or meditation?

Close your eyes and let your partner take over...meditation

I just have to say, "YOU GUYS ARE AWESOME!!!!!" I absolutely love how the Forum Family really is a family with encouragement and positive reinforcement and FANTASTIC ideas!

Motivation 1
I picked up bellydancing because Ms. Britney Spears used bd moves in her MTV VMA performace and video for Slave 4 U. I recently found an article that outlined Britney's workout routine and meal plan. Since I personally think Brit has a well trim figure and nice abs, I am pulling some of my routine from her routine and using her as motivation.

Update
Tuesday - 2 sets of 15 crunches, bicycle twists and leg lifts (scaled down from Britney's workout which consisted of about a billion abdominal exercises...I have to work up to it)
Wednesday - again, 2 sets of 15 crunches, bicycle twists and leg lifts
Thursday - I'm not sure what these are called, so I'll try and explain...you lay on your back and lift your legs up toward the ceiling. Someone stands over you and pushes your legs so they fall to the ground. Using your ab muscles, you keep your legs from falling to the ground. I think we did about 20 or so of these. I was going to do the 2 sets of 15 c, bt, and lls, but my abs were INCREDIBLY sore.
Friday - Today...nothing as of yet, but I am going to finish up in the Forum and then do a Hula workout guided by a VHS tape.

Motivation 2
As advised by a member of the DF via private message: I am going to create a sheet like a calendar which lists every day for the next month. Next to each day will be a box. On each day that I exercise, I can add a sticker to the box. Once I have successfully exercised every day for two weeks straight, I can go see the new dance movie "Honey," which is REALLY want to see.

Final Comments
Taita - I love your honesty/question idea and am going to implement immediately. Thanks!
scorpion guy - WOW! Do you ever have dedication! Thank you for the motivation and the example...I am aiming to start with a half hour each morning, then to an hour each morning, the an hour in the morning with a half hour in the evening and finally an hour in the morning and an hour in the evening. Probably one hour aerobic and one hour yoga/meditation.
pygmalion - I look forward to your messages! Bring on the encouragement and the kick in the butt.
SD - THANKS! I need as many accountablity cops as I can get.

DDD,

A thought here...do you keep a workout journal? If you do not, it's not a bad idea to write out your workout goals and your workouts too. I used to bring a binder to the gym when I was into weightlifting...and a lot of the guys used to laugh about it. But after they had a look at my notes and saw how much progress I'd made...they usually asked me for a few pointers!

Sometimes just writing up your workout schedule and then putting copies of it around your house can be great motivation. :)

Best,

SG

I have not worked out yet today...but it's coming as soon as I finish the messages. I think I'll do a round of MTV's The Grind workout with guest host Eric Nies (from MTV's the Real World). I believe that what you describe is a resistance ab exercise. Resistance because you are trying to keep your legs up but someone is throwing them to the ground. These are great. I've done other resistance exercise to work body parts. Unfortunately don't do too many of these as I usually am in and out with a short quick workout whenever I find the time, and it's donwn right impossible to coordinate something like that with a partner!!!

Today's workout is complete! I didn't do the MTV Grind like I thought, but rather the Goddess Belly Dance workout which is FANTASTIC!!! It's led by Dolphina, who is an amazing bellydancer. She encourages throughout the entire video with phrases like "beautiful," "amazing," "you are a goddess." It's great!

I coupled the video with 2 sets of 15 crunches, bicycle twists, leg raises, reverse crunches, and push ups.

Now I'm enjoying a pear and bottle of water.

Just a quick update...workouts are going pretty good.

On Tuesday, I did do a soft 20 minute yoga workout, which was a nice stretch for my sore muscles.

Wednesday, I am ashamed to report I did not workout at all. We traveled to my fiance's parent's home for Thanksgiving and by the time we got there, got settled in and started a movie, I had fallen asleep.

Today, I have yet to workout and really would prefer not to as my stomach is NOT sitting well from all the yummy food I had earlier today. I know if I don't workout, though, I'll feel just horrible tomorrow. The plan is to log out of the Forums after this post and do the Buns of Steel workout with the ab work...I'm thinking I might do a dance video instead. I'll have to see once I walk to the other room which I feel like doing.

Anyway, hope all is well with everyone else. Have a super evening and a FANTASTIC Thanksgiving!

Saturday - as of right now, I spent all morning shopping. For those of you who don't feel this qualifies as exercise, you've never shopped with me. So many stores, so little time...it's all about the walking. I'm hangin' with my family this weekend, so there's a really good possiblity we're going to be clubin' tonight which will also count as exercise. I'm also going to implement the 3 sets of 15.

Let us know how the Pilates goes...I've yet to take a class on that...however I may end up taking one very soon.

Oddly enough...taking a formal yoga class was one of the reasons I got into dancing. I met a dancer there that was such a sweetheart...and I thought "hey, if I could meet girls like her at dances, I better start taking some lessons!"

On that note...the yoga classes and groups I've been to tend to be at least 90% women or more...I was often the only guy in my class! (note to the guys - hint-hint, wink-wink!) :P

I agree with you DDD!!! Walking is exercise. Yesterday was a cold windy day in NYC and did a lot of walking (Chinatown, SOHO, East and West Village...) We kept on going into little places and getting a bite to eat and something to warm up, but when I got home I was still starving. I've started keeping a workout journal and I have to say, props to me! I'm really doing it!!!! Two full weeks in a row with only two days off. Hooray!!!!

Sunday - November 30
- 3 sets of 15 crunches, bicycle twists, leg lifts, pushups
- 1 set of 15 (with 1 pound weights) front curls, side curls, arm raises, overhead pushup

Monday - December 1
- 2 sets of 15 crunches, side crunches, bicycle twists, leg lifts, scissors, pushups
- 2 sets of 15 (with 1 pound weights) front curls, side curls, arm raises, overhead pushup
- 2 sets of 30 jumping jacks

Tuesday - December 2
- day of rest (I think one day of rest a week isn't bad)

Wednesday - December 3
- plan to do relaxed yoga CD before bed (battling an upset stomach with onset of a cold)

I understand the DD, but the DDD is kinda confusing...I mean, I get it and I don't have a preference to which I am addressed as, but I would imagine DDL (DancersDreamLand) rather than DDD.

Last night, instead of the light yoga, I did...
2 sets of fifteen ab works (crunches, side crunches)
2 sets of 15 butt/thigh work (leg raises, scissors)
2 sets of 15 arms works (with 2 pound weights-front curls, side curls, arm raises, overhead pushups)
2 sets of 30 jumping jacks
2 sets of 5 "real" pushups (all other pushups have been modified)

Tonight I'm kinda crabby so I'm not sure what type of workout I'll do. Right now, I really want to go for a long rollerblade, but it's too dark and too cold outside. I'll let you know what I end up doing.

Thanks for the encouragement!

Kinda on a yoga kick...

GREAT NEWS! I rewarded myself by going to see "HONEY" last night. It wasn't what I expected, but I tend to build things up in my mind and am then frequently dissapointed. Anyway, the film was kind of like a giant hip hop video with a very tiny (very very tiny) amount of drama thrown in. I'm sure it's one I'll add to my dance video collection when it become available on video. I think I'll have to see it a couple more times (on video) before it will be a favorite. By all means, though, I encourage anyone who enjoys dance to go see it. There's some laughter and inspiration to the film, just not very much drama.

Anyway...so now the new inspiration is to see the move "The Company" later this month or early in January. It's a movie about the behind the scene of the ballet starring Neve Campbell. I believe it was taped with the help from a famous Chicago dance company, whose name I cannot recall at the moment.

Ooh...one more bit of trivia. For those of you who have heard of A Time for Dancing (a book by Davida Willams about a young girl whose only passion is to dance and get into Julliard who become diagnose with a terminal illness), the long awaited movie based on the book will be released on Showtime later this month. For specific times, check out the Movies section of my site.

I'll update later with today's exercise. Thanks for everyone's continued support and encouragement. You are all the BEST! :D

Thanks for the follow up...I need a good kick in the rump roast as the workout has been non-existant last few days.

Saturday 12/6 - Nothing

Sunday 12/7 - 2 hours rollerblading (would have been one hour but wanted to make up for my laziness on Saturday...actually, not too much laziness just really busy...babysat all day and then had out of town, unexpected company from before the babysitting was done until after church Sunday morning)

Monday & Tuesday - major drama on the home front...so not a lot of anything has been done.

Wednesday 12/10 - tonight my plans are to finish getting through these messages and then do an hour of goddess belly dance...I need the inspiration and womanly power.

Hope all is well with everyone! I'll keep you posted.

Hello everyone! Long time no chat...our computer has been down and out. It seems to be working again, though.

I am very unhappy to report I have done nothing except be very busy and very lazy. The past two weeks have been non-stop headaches for wedding planning and I just haven't had the ambition to workout.

I'm in major need of a kick in the rump roast and some encouragement...

I hope the holiday season is finding everyone in good health and cheer!

You know what, ddl? And occasional lazy spell does not a slacker make. Yesterday is past, but today you can get up and get back on track.

Goor luck with the wedding planning. :D
