Apparently this has been around since 1998, but I'm just now finding out about it. It is a video game where you dance on a pad that lights up wherever you step. I believe it keeps score by how well you keep up with the rhythm and gets progressively harder. There are both arcade versions and home version040210 4:27:51 read_const: Got error 127 when reading table ./danceforumsdb/dforum_forums
ncers. The dancers face the audience, not the screen. The game is being promoted as a 'healthy' video game. Two thumbs up from me! Here is link to some video clips of people playing the game:

Dude, you are pry new to this, so i will cut you some slack. We don't face the adudience unless we do freestyle or really easy songs and junk. We look at the screen as to know what notes to hit, unless, like many people, oyu have memorized the notes.

Thanks for cutting me some slack, Nali :)

I have one question for you, Nali. Can you dance without DDR? If so, what kind of music/moves you like?

I've played this a few times, it's pretty fun. I own that machine! If there was ever a video game made for me to destroy this is the one

I've tried is a few times at the arcade. What fun? Anybody else?

Hey! For those of you who have no idea of what we're talking about, I found pictures of a home version. (There are better photos on ebay, but they'll disappear in a couple days, so ...)

http://www.digitaltorque.com/dancepad

Basically, it's a light-up dance pad, on which you do specific steps. Kind of like those arcade games we used to play, where things light up and you have to stomp on them, or bop them with a hammer? Only this is different, because you actually dance.

I've done it at Dave and Busters. It was so hard. I saw this cute little guy doing it and he was so fast and so good. I wonder if he was a dancer. Hmp? :?

That game is really hard. I guess you have to play it a lot to get used to the sequences.

My students bought a kids version of that for my daughter. She really enjoyed it.

bouncybouncyweee
11-07-2003, 01:27 PM
Acutally, to explain it better, there is an up, down, left and right arrow, and there's a row of arrows at the top of the screen, and as the song plays, different sequences of appear and go towards the top arrows and you must stomp on the appropriate arrow on the floor on the beat that it hits the top part.

Really, the game should be renamed Stomp Stomp Revolution.

After you being to memorize all the hard levels, it's possible to do all kinds of freaky levels, including the double pad, where one person takes charge of both sides.

And I know a lot of DDR people. And most of them can't dance worth the quarter they use to put in the machine. haha

Hard? HARD??? Oh come on now, you wussies!!!

It's not hard . . .

It's extremely fricken' hard!!! I couldn't do it either. It felt like my first Waltz lesson all over again, only much faster. Couldn't do that either!

 Late again for this thread! (could one physically finish reading so many threads in time..?)

A good friend of mine (one of the best-known dancer/instructor in my town) told us once that his teenage daughters love this game (AND they kick-ass at it too) & invited him to have a go one day, in front of all their teenage friends.

This guy jumped on, going: "Watch this, kids. I am a PRO!" Then started doing his things, while completely missing all the 'hits' . He was having so much fun, completely oblivious to how embarrased the kids were ("....Dad,.....Dad....!") while carrying on with his little routine there....!

DDR is more a game than a dance, but it is loads of fun. I love to dance freestyle where the music is loud and vibrates my blood, and DDR requires a great deal of balance, as well as eye-foot coordination. It's been called a game for young people, but at 49, I find I love the game, as much for the music as for the movement.

The game is showing up in many different arcades, bowling centers, movie theatres, as well as Lancade, an online computer game center. Lancade is sponsoring a tournament in Central Florida, where dancers, gamers, or players (choose your name) have an opportunity to win money.

You can find our more about both Lancade and DDR at the following links:

I had forgotten about this thread, DM. Hilarious. I saw two ladies try this at the arcade a few weeks ago. I wish I'd had a video camera. They were priceless!

If I ever try this, I'm going to have to get the home version. Never will I be caught out in public doing that particular dance. LOL.

Ok, I just tried this for the first time at a party last weekend... it's really hard!!!

Alcohol helps - mostly cuz you don't care!

How do you get a higher grade, anyway? I think out of the 40-50x people did this, and the best grade we saw was a 'B'.

DDR was a HUGE hit in Japan, where the game was designed, and all the video game arcades had quite a number of the machines which kids lined up to use! After awhile, everyone had the "home version". Nowadays, this game is completely passe. Right now, the big hit is a drumming game in which you tap the beat, which appears on the screen, on a drum pad. This game has been out for a couple years now...

Neil

I know I'm really late to the party here. I saw the game for the first time at least a year ago on TechTV's Fresh Gear. I live only a mile from Game Works, but it took me about six months to make the trip. Then, I was going to post about it, but I wanted to do a search here first and read what's already been posted. Well, I finally got around to it while I was stuck inside due to the hurricanes.

After all that, I don't really have much to say. I thought it was a lot of fun. I enjoyed turning the "stomping" into something that more closely resembled dancing. I can see how it would be good exercise for couch potatoes. I don't think the exercise will ever compare to a good Zumba or Hip-hop aerobics class for me because I can't really go all out with my movements when I'm trying to follow those arrows in the screen. I guess it might just take more practice. I think the game would also be useful to beginner dancers who need to learn to hit the beats. The game lets you know instantly whether you were exactly on the beat, or just close.

I think I might get a Sony Playstation II and an Ignition pad to play this at home on days when I don't want to go to the gym. I guess I had more to say about it than I thought.

Neil-
Glad to hear you find DDR fun! I have to admidt I have never tried it myself, but several people I know(here in Japan) have & said it was challenging, but fun. There is a breed of Japanese called "otaku" who love to do nothing but stay home and watch TV, read comics and play video games and DDR has helped some of them get up off their butts and get a decent workout. Unfortunately, the game seems to have disappeared off the face of the Japanese archipelago and the trend-seeking Japanese have found other newer electronic forms of entertainment to keep them occupied...

...the trend-seeking Japanese have found other newer electronic forms of entertainment to keep them occupied...

Speaking of which, I also saw a game where the monitor screen has a pair of fighters and you shadow box one while cameras follow your moves and impose them onto your character whose opponent then responds. That looks very active too, sort of a "Fight, Fight, Revolution."

Neil

Virtual reality?

I don't think so. It looked more like you see the fight as a third party. You don't feel like you are in the fight, but you use your body motions as a game controller, so it's something like that.

Yes, we're fine, thank you. It has mostly just been the stress of preparing and waiting for the storms. It got a little windy and rainy with the electrical power flickering on and off. I was more concerned about you. You're in Orlando, right?

Yes, there is that kind of game out- I've seen it advertised on TV. Can't actually say that I've ever played a video game, with the exception of the very early "pong" game that we had at a restaurant I worked at when I was in high school. I prefer to spend my free time doing things I can gain something from... :?

Why does the pad have to have discrete buttons? If it could detect the position of feet anywhere on the surface it could be used for teaching shines or even partnering footwork drills. Oh I so want this! 8)

So where do I get a DDR game? and if their made by different companies where do i get one. Are the home ones vastly different to the arcade versions?

I have a balance/wobble board which emits different sounds as you touch down one of five sides, but it lacks imagination in the sound department its a different instrument on each colour and yells " fanatastic" no matter how badly you do in following the calls.

You can order online - various sites - for either a specific game system or if you don't have one, you can order the plug and play version which just plugs into your TV. I have this DDR version and it is quite fun! I've never played the arcade version, but seems similar...just a much smaller, cheaper version...it is a dance pad/mat, not hard metal platform.

keep doing it...you're timing will improve.

question, tho: are you bringing your feet to center after every step? that's a common error that beginners make, and it's reinforced by the beginner dancer they show stepping that way.

keep your feet on the arrows they just stepped, for the most part. you should find that this increases your reaction time because you aren't adding in an extra step in between the ones that matter. without making this change, it's pretty impossible to get decent scoring past the beginner/easy level.
