My gf got wind of (and signed us up for) a promotion being organized in New York City related to the upcoming Dancing With The Stars season opener. They are looking for intermediate and up dancers for a one-day thing this Wednesday.

The operation is being managed by "Buzztone" (www.buzztone.com), who will supply tuxes / dresses and "MP-3 players with speakers". Sounds like an outdoor event, am wondering if we'll be duking it out for sidewalk space with the Rolex knock-offs or dancing on a real dance floor...

Does anyone know any details about the event or Buzztone's M.O.???

They told us that it would be in 'public spaces' and yes there would be outdoors work. Sounded too much like sidewalk dancing in NY's 30 degree weather, and dancing on hard stone floors (lobbies of buildings are sometimes considered public spaces, but then again so are subway stations and such) so we passed. I imagine if they were more upfront or detailed we'd go for it, but right now it sounds too much like a better paying version of handing out flyers on the streetcorners...

i'm doing it out here in LA - i got assigned to pasadena (convenient for me) where there's going to be a lot of ABC coverage on wednesday (rose bowl) so with any luck they'll be panning us while keith jackson does a plug for dancing with the stars during the rose bowl... i just hope it stops raining - pasadena is drenched at the moment after 2-3 days of rain. plus i got a 10% referral fee on five couples i sent them that they elected to hire for the gig.

the MP3 players only have 9 songs on them. i imagine ABC will have ASCAP/BMI concerns if we try to put our own music on them. but dancing to the same 9 songs for 6 hours straight (10 minutes off per hour plus a 1.2 hour lunch break)... plus the salsas are *so* slow...

Or a decent chese danish. I haven't seen a good one in well over a decade, since I left the NYC area.

some logistical problems with the promo... they didn't realize they had to get permits, for instance. lordy.

i was listening to the music being played in the commercials & i think we're dancing to the same music that the contestants will be using.

Alemana, re: the permits thing, were you referring to this (DWTS) promotion?

Buzztone has not been forthcoming with information on the "high traffic locations", I've been wondering if this means hotel lobbies, subway platforms, or street corners. Any of those, I suspect, require *someone's* written permission, which is a lot of work if you want enough coverage to generate meaningful "buzz"...

yep.

where did you end up dancing?

Katarzyna
01-05-2006, 11:49 AM
All over.. a lot of subways, some outside stuff plus a 20 second on a show this morning

alemana
01-05-2006, 11:51 AM
how did you dance in the subways, in terms of the floor and stuff... wasn't it difficult?

Katarzyna
01-05-2006, 11:52 AM
I used character shoes instead of ballroom shoes. Not much space available to move...

Wish I would've known...what tv show was it, Kat??

Katarzyna

Toni Danza (not sure about the last name)...

It was like a 20 sec merengue piece... 2 hours ago. there were 5 couples.

Katarzyna

Got low marks from this judge....

I think you're thinking of Chuck Danza, the dance judge, not Tony Danza, the former star of "Who's the Boss?" who now has his own talk show.

You're most definitely right! He'd actually be pretty interesting to have on the show....and let's get Judith Light and Alyssa Milano while we're at it.

Actually, I'd like to see Paris Hilton on the show and then see an audience member roll a water bottle onto the floor in her LOD and watch her trip on live tv. I'm mean...but she irks the daylights out of me.

Were you dancing in a group, or just the 2 of you, in one place or a "rotation"? How many dancers actually showed up? Did the public give you a good reception?

The gig sounded like they would dispatch solitary couples to a single location for the duration of the shift;

The gig sounded like they would dispatch solitary couples to a single location for the duration of the shift;there were 5 couples, we just basically travelled down the floor..

The dancing on the streets and in the subway was mainly bunch of people in a big group moving around...

Katarzyna

my knees and ankles mainly.one of my knees hurts a lot because of hyperextending it in one cha cha... no latin for me, have to take care of my knees and feet..

I doubt that the water bottle would be necessary.

I'm getting really pissed about the payment from the promo. I've been waiting for 2 months almost.. most people got their checks already. 1st tehy had wrong address and that's understandable. But the address was verified and supposedly the check sent again 2 weeks ago. Still nothing in sight... I give it 4 more days and then I will be really upset. Anyone else having problems!!! I REALLY need the money now... !!!

alemana

yes, others have not been paid... a very similar story. sucks. i'm sorry you haven't gotten your money.

yes, others have not been paid... a very similar story. sucks. i'm sorry you haven't gotten your money.do you know who, and how to get in touch with them. I've been exchanging e-mails with the buzztone people for couple weeks now, but nothing came out of it yet... If I know more people that had problems, maybe we could contact them together as a group. everyone I know got paid already, that's why I inquired here...
