So...I need to buy a new camera of some sort for 1) daily life 2) my upcoming trip to Cuba, as well as various other destinations 3) salsa!

Now, I'm wondering whether to get a foto or video camera, or a mix of the two.

The mix would of course be great but: the decent ones are madly expensive, and its prolly cheaper to buy two separate machines instead, which seems a bit of a waste of money to me somehow

The videocamera would be great, for salsa of course, a bit less for travelling and so on i think cuz i dont think ull watch those videos as often as youd watch pictures, and u cant put a movie on the wall.

The foto camera, at least, has the option of making videos which may be lousy quality, so not for travelling stuff, but for salsa it might be enough to do the trick...

what you think?

I own a digital still photo camera, but not a video camera.

The last time I shopped for such items was some time ago. But at the time, my impression was that some video cameras could produce still photos, but the still photos they produced were not of resolution as great as one could get from a still camera. Likewise, some still cameras could produce videos, but the length and quality was not as good as one could get from a video camera.

When travelling, there have been times I wished I had a video camera to supplement my still camera. For example, last fall we a visited a historic, working, water-powered grist mill. I tried to capture action as best I could with the still camera, but I really needed a video camera!

Therefore, when and if I ever have the disposable cash, I would like to buy the most compact digital video camera I can and begin carrying it along with my digital still camera.

SDSalsaguy is probably the greatest photography expert here on DF, so let's hope he chimes in with more valuable information than I am able to provide.

Best Regards,

Jay

i think u can get a digi cam ( still cam ) for a reasonable amount of money, that also have a video cam as well.. u might get one with a big memory card, that can store as much space on it as u want..

the videos might not be of a very high quality but it still would be GOOD TO WATCH.. dont get something very cheap or else u'd just throw ur money away cuz u wont be benefiting from either the photos or the video cam.

i myself prefer photographs. i am addicted to photos..they are the true meaning of a memory!!

search for a dual use cam ( photos and videos) there are things that are around 200-300 $$.
