What is a break in dance terminology?

I pulled this definition from ballroomdancers.com, but it applies to non-ballroom dances as well.
Break: A unit of two steps where the second step is taken in exactly the opposite direction from the first.

That description wasn't much, will. So maybe a few folks could chime in and help describe some of these breaks (just the ones I can think of -- there are others, I'm sure :D ) Just so you can get an idea what the definition actually means. :D

side break
back break
forward break

I was thinking mostly about Salsa when I asked this question. You know, "Break on one, break on two, three whatever..."
