View Full Version : Who could replace Carrie Ann?

With all the complaints about Ms. Not A Ballroom Dancer, what female ballroom judge do you think would be good in this role?
Laura

Thing is, except for Carrie-Ann's really nasty comment about Stacy being as good as the pros, she's had a lot of really on-the-mark feedback.
If they were to get, say, Mary Murphy, then please tranquilize her first so she's not screaming through the whole show. I value Mary's opinion and love her enthusiasm, but she was definitely over the top at times on "So You Think You Can Dance?"
I'd suggest Charlotte, but that would be too upsetting to people who were rabid Kelly fans from last time.
We need someone young-looking, female, pretty, knowledgeable, and articulate to completely fill the Carrie-Ann slot. Someone who had done 10-Dance. Diana McDonald?
I don't know, I'm grasping at straws here.

mind is blank on ladies.... however I can think of a couple male pros who are both incredibly knowledgeable and have a very entertaining personality, that I would love to see as judges on the show.

I don't know that it has to be a ballroom judge, just so long as a non-ballroom one is intelligent enough not to try commenting on the ballroom specific elements of any couple's performance. That being said, in response to CCCC's question, I'd think that Toni Redpath would be great.

Julie Fryer would be good too. But I don't think that will be practical since Louis is her ex-partner.

Nice ;-)
Mary is going to be on the road with So You Think You Can Dance season 2, so I doubt the networks (Fox/ABC) would want to share her, even though she has some low-key background involvment with the DWTS cast.
I would 2nd SD's suggestion of Toni, especially since she has proven herself in Standard, Latin AND Smooth on the competition floor. Care to start a petition ;-)
Also, San Diego is a short commute away...

So this means she's going to be an audition judge? I think that's a great idea! Last time it seemed that Nigel was the only audition judge, but they'd bring in others from time to time. It will be interesting to see how season 2 shapes up.

I think that ballroom listeners hear comments the judges make on dancing, and assume that they are commenting on ballroom dancing, when in fact they aren't. Consider that Louis's response to the controversial samba criticism was to name the ballroom figures they danced - which was not the problem. It's not that they didn't dance something with a lot of samba elements, but that they didn't manage to sell the overall joint result as samba to someone without the expertise to recognize and give partial credit for the ballroom samba elements that were there.

I actually think that could be an issue, since there would then be no Americans on the "judging" panel--just a Brit, an Aussie and an Italian.

Depending on how you define "american" (example, ruling out everyone with an accent) you could end up excluding a near majority of the best known US dancers/teachers.

Also, if we're talking about such closed-minded understandings of American, Toni looks more "American" than Carrie Ann or Bruno!

Anybody remember David Canty? He was doing quite well in the US senior standard ten years back, and his day job was radio announcer. Sounds like a good combination to me.

But should it really matter whether someone looks or sounds American? I mean who really cares if they're American or European or Australian? Does everyone here really think that the audience is going to mind a diverse international panel of judges? Is it possible that viewers will see it as something that makes the show more interesting?

Personally I couldn't care less how someone looks or sounds RI, but I was offering that idea in response to the post Chris S made. As far as how it would be seen, I can't really guess, only hope.

I wonder if there isn't a fair amount or risk to real ballroom professionals who participate - they get exposure, but in more detail and perhaps not as favorable light as an ordinary competition where they either dance in a more traditional format, or rank couples but don't have to comment.
Depending on how you define "american" (example, ruling out everyone with an accent) you could end up excluding a near majority of the best known US dancers/teachers.
Joe and Mary Sixpack don't know any of the "best known" US dancers/teachers.

True, but part of the problem with the current panel is that the dance community doesn't think they have enough ballroom knowledge - the purpose of getting a well known ballroom personality would be to rectify that immediately, rather than a lesser known person having to prove their expertise by saying sensible things over the course of the show.

The dance community is a VERY small segment of the show's target population. So what we think here on this board is of very little concern to the producers. As long as they have someone who can look and sound relatively credible, and who has a personality that incites emotions (whether positive or negative), they have hit the mark to reach their major target population.

I think we need a young gal (22-28 )in there that is not necessarily certified to judge but who has taught and competed ballroom plus learned other dance genres as well. I think that would be ideal..because then she would be able to distinguish what constitutes great dancing while understanding a student's perspective. And she would attract the younger crowd of viewers..it would be nice to see more young men pick up dance even if it is because of a hot girl on T.V.

But I think she enjoys dancing so much more that she won't do it.
EDIT: When they didn't want to give Charlotte the co-host job, they should've asked whether she would like to be a judge on the show.
