View Full Version : DWTS 2 - Final week [SPOILERS]

Plus--and this is the real reason why this is such a no-brainer--Jerry continuing on in the competitive ballroom world would be the kind of publicity that the NDCA--or, for that matter, USA Dance--should be tripping over themselves to get. It would be AWESOME. Can you imagine Jerry Rice and either Mrs. Jerry Rice or another celeb from the show dancing at USA Dance Nationals in San Jose in 2007? San Jose is close enough to San Francisco that you could count on there being 49er fans who would want to check THAT out. (And then some of them would fall in love with dance at a live comp, and then they would take lessons....) It would be so great!
Would it be a rule bend to allow the DWTS celebs to dance as ams? Maybe. It's not one that would bother me, though. (I save my outrage for things like packages that cost more than their a la carte components, certain pro-am teachers who charge their students a per dance amount that on a minute-by-minute basis even a high-class hooker or a lawyer would find extortionate, etc.)
ChaChaMama
The DWTS celebs would be considered pros? How is the pro versus am designation written up? Getting paid for dancing, period? See? That's why I've always thought the pro versus am stuff was wrong. There's gotta be a way to define pro that really captures what pro means. Jerry Rice or Stacy Kiebler couldn't possibly be a dance pro, in anybody's books. Sheesh! :?
ChaChaMama
02-25-2006, 10:08 PM
I think that was the question Michelle introduced back on page 22 or 23.
My vote is that the celebs are still amateurs, but I can see where she is coming from in asking this question.
I'm wondering if the likes of Jerry, Stacy and Drew can compete as an amateur? Since they're being paid to dance doesn't that change their status to pro?
I realize they would be at a disadvantage but the rules are the rules. Am I missing something?

I don't know if it's still there, but there used to be an exception to the "getting paid" rule for TV demonstrations that were for the betterment of the sport, or something like that. Not sure if it would apply to DWtS. I would think that Jerry could be reinstated in a heartbeat if necessary, though.

Unless they change the way the voteing is they have lost one viewer. When Staceys name was called tonight, that was the madest I have been in a long while. I felt like putting somethng threw the tv. Jerry shouldn't of been in the top 7, thats how bad he was. How can someone who gets all those 10's get taken off. Even someone in the audience said the same thing. The voteing was horrible. Stacey was the best, no delt about it. I am just glad that Jerry didn't win. I know they would have gotten alot of terrible emails. Wait till next year, Stacey took ballet, was never a professional dancer. Jerry stunk and stunk

Mmm. I see why you say that, but I don't necessarily agree. To me, there's a lot that goes into a dance performance. Stacy had some things. Drew had some other things. *shrug* And, unfortunately for Stacy, her worst performance of the show was at the end, IMO. I suspect that's why she was eliminated. I wish it weren't true, but that's how it goes. :? Some folks (a lot it seems) voted each week based on what they saw that week. *shrug*

P.S. Were Tony and Stacey forced to do a samba to "Living La Vida Loca"? Because that song is a much better mambo than samba, and I would think that mambo would play to Tony's strengths. (Not that he's not amazing at all dances, but he is the rhythm champ.) He looked smokin' hot tonight!

I don't have a problem with the results, although I was a bit surprised that Stacey came in third. Don't feel too sorry for her. Her career just got a huge bump-up. She'll be in demand in Hollywood now. (Same goes for Drew.) I was happy to see Jerry get as far as he did. Even though he is (was) a professional athelete, he represented the "average Joe" as far as his dance experience (and age) went. And, you know, just this week it seemed like he got past one of the barriers that beginning leads struggle with, that being the balancing of the leading and one's own dancing. Yes, Drew was better, but I really think Jerry has come farther during the duration of the show.

Well gang, I'm sorry that some of you feel cheated or robbed from this whole thing, but I enjoyed the first series so much and the second series much more.
I think that the right couple won. The only couple that I thought should have gone further were Giselle and Jonathan, but they knew the odds before they started and showed so much class when the time came to go.
I hope that this show will be the beginning of something that will around for a long time.

That sounds pretty harsh to me. It took me a long time (much more than 8 weeks) to even feel like a dancer and I wasn't on National TV.
I think Jerry Rice was really the person who had the most celebrity status when this series started and it took incredible guts for him to do this and potentially risk the goodwill that his sports career had brought him.
As far as Stacy having an advantage by being a pro team cheerleader, remember that Trista from the first series was one as well and was the first person cut.

Didn't Jerry say something to the effect tonight (in the retrospective film footage?) Something like "I'm living peoples' dreams."
My take? I'm glad Drew won. Stacy was great. But The Jerrys of the world are the people that will elevate ballroom dance, IMO. So I've gotta give props to Jerry and people like him -- folks who know nothing about dance but are willing to invest what it takes to get (relatively) good at it. The Drews and Stacys of the world are professional performers. Of course they look good. But, to me, a schmuck who started dancing in the midst of a mundane life because of a long-deferred dream? Jerry's the man.

Dance Mentor I think we are in for quite a ride! I think this is going to continue for at least the next few months. It may quiet down some in the summer after the hype from the movies subside, but I imagine it will pick back up with season 3.
People are talking about dancing every where - I sometimes feel weird having work (dance) conversations on my cell phone in public places - people tune in to what I am saying. I don't long for the days of obscurity, it is just soooooo different. At CA Open there were bands of kids running down the halls trying to find Cheryl Burke - screaming her name, checking the bathroom for her, giggling and saying "Cheryl and Drewwwwww, Cheryl and Drewwwww" over and over. I suddenly checked in to the fact that they are celebs now. In People magazine and newspapers and on CNN. When I tell strangers what I do, its the first thing they mention and when they find out I know Tony and some of the others, people freak out.
I saw Pierre Dulaine yesterday at NY Dance Festival and today I saw Antonio Banderas playing him in the trailer for the movie. Life is becoming surreal.

I was surprised that Stacy was third in viewer voting. From the number of posts about her on the ABC board, I thought she was going to be first or second among the viewers. Maybe her performance on Thursday really effected the call-ins?
Aside: you can tell how she finished among the viewers because she finished third. As you know, the couples are ranked by the judges and by the audience. (Someone else posted about getting 3 points for 1st place and highest score wins. I actually prefer giving points out that are equal to their position, with lowest score winning. E.g., Drew gets 1 point for finishing 1st with the judges, Stacy gets 2, Jerry gets 3.)
Knowing that Stacy got 2 points from the judges, she either got 1, 2, or 3 points from the people. If she got 1 point, she would have a total of 3. That's impossible, because that would mean she beat Jerry, who already has 3 points. But we know she didn't beat Jerry, because she finished 3rd.
If she got 2 points, she'd have 4 total points. But that's impossible. If she had 4 points, than either Jerry and Drew had 4 points, and the ranking would be determined by the audience, meaning Jerry won and Stacy was second. Or if she had 4 points, then Drew would have 2 total point, but that means Jerry had 6 points. That's not possible because we know Stacy finished third.
Therefore, Stacy had to have 5 total points, 2 from the judges, 3 from the people. We don't know how many audience points Drew and Jerry had because it's impossible for Jerry to overtake Drew. (Even if Jerry finished 1st among the people, he would have 4 total points, while Drew would have 3. If Drew finished first among the people, he would have 2 points, while Jerry would have 5, but win the audience tiebreaker with Stacy. Either way, Drew beats Jerry).
As soon as Stacy's name was announced, Drew had to realize that it was mathmatically impossible for him to lose to Jerry (he mentioned that he did the math in his head). So good acting job on his part.

I only have a minute and I don't want to be a tease! I also don't want to be a gossip, 'cause it ain't cool to gossip and then people stop telling you stuff. I'd rather be known as a good friend and confidant.
We talked about costumes - last minute wardrobe changes which sent the designers into panic. Well it goes like this: each dancer needs two costumes each week (one for each routine). 3 days before the show airs, someone makes a color change because the original costume color won't show up well on tv. That's now FOUR NEW costumes for a couple. 2 of them have to be completed in 3 days. Start to finish, with stoning, etc. Yikes! So stressful.
Drew had trouble with his shoulders (yeah, everyone knows that) but when Nick suggested a jacket without any padding in the shoulders, voila! No more problems! "Never fear, Nick is here!" I keep hearing it over and over in my head. Hee Hee!
We talked about all of his cross-continental traveling. I definitely would not want to be doing that all the time. Yuck. Since Tatum was eliminated from the show early he wasn't always required. He did do a lot of choreography for the show so he was around for that but, ya know there was some down time.
We also talked about Pro-Am dancing, Amateur couples (he prefers this to Pro-Am) I told him I liked to dance with my Pro and why and we discussed that for about 30 miles!
I asked him if all the women hired personal trainers once they knew they were cast for the show. Seriously, those women had some rocking abs. He said everyone lost weight on the show. All the original measurements had to be tossed out. He said Tia lost the most weight of all. Good for her! It was really noticable on the show.
Oh, he's also a good co-pilot. The directions to the venue were a little weird so we ended up a little bit out of the way and he got us there. I tell ya, I was bumming to have him in my car knowing he had to teach in an hour and a half and we weren't at the venue yet. We did fine, he got there in plenty of time to settle in, and get to the ballroom.
I was so afraid I wouldn't wake up in time (at 4am, thank you very much) that I barely slept all night. Needless to say, at about 1pm that day I was toast.
Alright, I'm out! See ya!!!

I had a friend mention DWTS to me today. Last night was the first time she watched, and now she wants me to come to her school and teach her primary school kids some dance. Kinda nice, actually.

That sounds really cool! That could make a major impact on a few of their lives. I wish I was exposed to it as a kid. Keep us posted.
I don't know if it's still there, but there used to be an exception to the "getting paid" rule for TV demonstrations that were for the betterment of the sport, or something like that. Not sure if it would apply to DWtS. I would think that Jerry could be reinstated in a heartbeat if necessary, though.
Old quote, but:
If USABDA is willing to reinstate an undeniable professional in Katerina Muller with apparently no questions asked, I don't see how they would have a leg to stand on to refuse to "reinstate" any of the celebs.
