Any other Bellydancers out there?
I tried it once... It's something I want to learn more of, just haven't focused on it yet. I'm interested in the whole hip-drop thing, wondering if I can get my body to move that way... hmmm....

I would keep at it, it's a great dance with a wonderful history. It may seem tough in the beginning, but with practice your body just naturally starts to move in that way. I guess that's with any type of dance, however.

I've been taking a belly dancing class for about 6 months, and I've moved up to the intermediate class! It's been great for loosening up, learning to use my ribs, hips, arms, attitude, etc. I took it to help with my ballroom dancing, and I think it has. I didn't get into it with the thought of "performing," but we are working on a routine and I think I'll do it if I'm available sometime. It would be fun-- a lot different from partner dancing!

Welcome!
Bellydance is probably my personal favorite type of dance and I've been doing it for around three or four years. I'd love to hear about your dancing journey and such...
Please come visit us at the non-partner dance forums - http://danceforums.net. There is an entire section dedicated to just belly dance!
Looking forward to hearing more!

Awesome, I'm going to check out the dance forum tonight. I've actually been dancing all my life. I had Bellydancers in the family, and I did a variety of dance myself. When I was 5 I went for Tap until I was about 12, then I did Jazz and Hip Hop, which I think really influenced my style today. I do what I call "Modern Bellydance" it's more of a style like Shakira does, kind of a Raks Sharqi with somehow more of an attitude, and even more upbeat. I speed up alot of the moves so that my hips shake a mile a minute, hehe.

I understand about a modern style of bellydance. There are very traditional dancers and then what I refer to as fusion dancers. I would qualify as a fusion dancer. While I can do traditional style dancing, I prefer (as do the gals withwhom I dance) to fuse bellydance with other styles of dancing...hip hop, Asian, African, Latin, etc. It's an absolute blast!
Looking forward to seeing you on the non-partner Forums!

I used to do hula...not quite belly dancing unless you're doing it incorrectly--hula wants you to isolate the hips more.

Awe, thanks for the replies guys! Wow, hula always amazed me. And just a few months ago I bought myself a grass skirt, for no apparant reason, haha. But, I never actually went for Hula lessons, I guess I'm scarred 'cause we had a Hawaiian play in second grade, and I wanted to be the beautiful hula-dancing lady in it, and I was stuck being behind the lights. So I said, heck with that I'll stick with my Middle Eastern stuff, jk.
I just joined the other boards, so if anyone's over there I put a post up in the "Bellydance" Category.
Ttyall soon,

Yes another belly dancer here! I've been dancing all my life. Belly dance, or middle eastern dance for about 7 years now.. Took me 20 + years to get my dh to go to ballroom with me so this is the first time in my life that i am dancing, on the floor, with a partner.. I did used to ice dance when i was younger but that is all "set" pattern.
I have also taken ballet, jazz and flamenco over the years.. So far have not tried any hula. Did a short intro course to East Indian and Bollywood dance and would love to return to that in the near future..
