I've noticed that often, when I'm out dancing, I get to dance more often when the crowd is smaller -- closer ratio of leads to follow, or friendlier atmosphere, or something, I'm not sure. Has any of you noticed the same thing? Do you have a dance crowd size you prefer? Why?

Yes, I've noticed this too; I have often done more dancing with a smaller crowd rather then a larger one. Crowd size does not necessarily determine the quality of the event IMO.

When it is too crowded it becomes like a meat market!! :) More attention must be diverted to avoiding any collisions, you are somewhat restricted in your dance repertoire. I'm not saying that I have not enjoyed dancing when the floor is crowded, but I definitely enjoy myself more when that's not the case.
I definitely enjoy dancing more if there is a bit more space. Although for me it really also depends on the venue. There are some places where no matter how crowded it gets on the dance floor, one can always find a great area where other people are not dancing. Once I was at this bar and the floor was packed, no room at all, and there was this adjoining patio room where you could still here the band well, you just couldn't see them. My dance partner and I went in and were the only ones dancing in this other room, it was great.
