View Full Version : Sensual Rhumba Music

I figured since we already have a thread for samba music, we should have one for rhumba too, since I love rhumba almost as much as I love samba. As I'm fairly new to dancing (had a total of 19 lessons so far, all group lesson), I don't have much in the way of music for anything. Any suggestions for good rhumba's would be appreciated.
Thanks

There actually was a thread where people talked about rhumba music, though I cannot remember offhand where it was... But, I recollect some recommendations were:
Falling in Love - G. Estefan and Miami Sound Machine.
Blessed - Elton John
So Nice - Bebel Gilberto
Perhaps Perhaps Perhaps - Doris Day
I personally have got some Turkish/Greek songs from the web a while back, that I like. Have no idea what the names are etc, though :(

I think those were mine, but for really sensual Rumba two that come to mind are:
Sway - Julie London
Besame Mucho - I've heard this by two different artists, but don't know who they are.

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll check them out. One of my favorites is the theme from Goldeneye.

I believe Diana Krall does a pretty good version of "Besame Mucho". Here are some of my other Rhumba faves...
Ricky Martin "Casi Un Bolero" (I just competed in the final round of Newcomer International Rhumba at the Ohio Star Ball this weekend and this was the song...so hot!)
Ana Gabriel "Eres Todo En Mi"
Son by Four "Puro Dolor"
The Tony Rich Project "Nobody Knows"
Berlin "Take My Breath Away"

Other favorites in addition to those mentioned include:
- Se Acabo by Lucia Mendez (26bpm). Very sensual, sung with tremendous emotion. The title means "I am finished." Strict tempo piece from Casa Musica's Latin Obsession CD.
- Hey by Julio Iglesias (26bpm)
- Emotion by Destiny's Child (23bpm)
- The One You Love by Paulina Rubio from her new album Border Girl (23bpm). Any Paulina Rubio album is a complete joy for dancers. Tan Sola from her Paulina album is also a great Rhumba song.
- Loving You by Jennifer Lopez (24bpm)
Also, FWIW, I think Lila Downs does a much better job of "Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps." Very sensual, rich with a deeper Latin-style Rhumba flavor than Doris Day's version, but not easy to dance to because it's quite fast at 28bpm and because of the tempo complexity used in the song. The first few bars are sung with no instruments. But powerful, wow!

A couple more,
Disadvantages of You- Brass Ring.
For those of you who are old enough; remember this one from the Benson and Hedges cigarette commercial in the late 60's?
The Peanut Vendor - Mongo Santamaria.
It's a bit fast, but works for Rumba.

Vertical Expression of Horizontal Desire - Bellamy Brothers
South of the Border - Dean Martin / Chris Isaak
Ticket to Heaven - Dire Straits
Are we in trouble now - Mark Knopfler
Diesel Cafe - Bellamy Brothers
Tequila Sunrise - Eagles
When you're only lonely - J.D. Souther
Cross My Broken Heart - Suzy Boguss
I like these. Was informed at another thread that they were Rhumbas. If anyone knows any more tunes with a similar rythm at any tempo let me know. Thanks in advance.

Sakura Kitty, you may find my ballroom dance music site helpful, because it provides additional details like bars per minute and links to song previews that will help you identify the differences between the music. There is also an article on helping you find the beat in dance music. www.dancesportmusic.com

Falling Into You (Celine Dion)
When We Dance (Sting)... it lasts 6 minutes (international preferably), so if you like to practice for a long time
Sacrifice (Elton John), probably better for American style.
Thanks for the suggestions that I can search for the next dance I get to mix music for... :)

The Look of Love - Diana Krall
I second that. Krall has a very sensual voice. Also by Diana Krall, "Besame Mucho". Her version is amazing.
I also highly reccomend "Piensa En Mi". Very nice.
Twilight Elena
Piensa En Mi is great. Wish it were just a little slower ... but I'm tempted to go with it anyway for my performance.
Thanks for the pointer, Elena.

It's an amazing song, but it's not at all a Rumba...
Personally, I like more latino/cuban rumbas, like Piensa en mi and Besame Mucho (or African Tango - a kill!). The english songs don't appeal to me all that much for this particular dance.

Two people you might try: An artist named Jose Jose has incredibly romantic music.
Also, there is a group called Gotan that does modernized "Tango" music. They are used on the soundtrack of "Shall We Dance" American version. The music is not so specifically tango and much of it has a good beat to dance Rhumba too. My favorite version of "Sway," by the way, is on the soundtrack to Dark City.

I've found these two to be easy enough to rumba to:

The song has probably been used ad nauseum but Diana Krall's 'Temptation' is as sensual as it gets.
BTW, for those who went to the Holiday Dance Classic in Las Vegas in December, what was that rumba song Wendy Johnson danced to with Alan Tornsberg, Pasha Pashkov, Jean-Marc Genereux, et al? It's been bugging me since!

Tell Me Why from the Casica Musica CD (popular at comps)
The version used in competitions is pants compared to the
original by Jessica Folker.
I'll second TE on Son by Four, their rumbas rule (especially
"Donde esta tu amor" and "Cuando seas mia").
Other favourites include:
Jennifer Lopez & Marc Anthony - No me ames
Proyecto Uno - Cruzando la calle
Giselle - Jurame
several versions of "Un historia de un amor" (just found out David Hasselhoff has done this song too, OMG!!! :p)
Btw, dancesportmusic.com has some peculiar song classifications.

My suggestions for good, sensual rhumbas are:
1. "Te Esperare" - but I don't know the name of the man who sings it. It is the spanish version of "Right here waiting for you".
2. "If Tommorow Never Comes"
3. "Calling" - Geri Halliwell
4. "Manana De Carnival" - Lusi Migel
5. "Comme Toi" - Ishtar - this is appropriate for show
6. "Tavol Mindenkitol" - Fiesta
7. "Te Juro" - Alejandro Fernandez
8. "Yo Naci" - Alejandro Fernandez
9. "Abrazame" - Tamara - this is one of my favourites rhumbas
10. "Bonga live" - Bonga
11. "My way" - Klaus Hallen
12. "You are the only one" - Ivan Mikulic - very good rhumba
13. "Speak Softly Love" - The Godfather - good for show, I think
14. "Imagine" - John Lennon
15. "Somos Novios" - Christina Aguilera& Andrea Bocceli - this rhumba is unique.

As far as I can tell, unlike the Bocelli's version, Cassidy's version does not have the Rumba beats or any distinct dance beats. A famous couple also did a Rumba showdance on Cassidy's version at OSB on Sat. Because there is no distinct beats I can hear, I believe that one can do any dance, including Tango and Paso, on this song. I alwayswanted to do Bolero shpwcase on Pavarotti's "Nessun Dorma," but it has been impossible for a novice dancer like myself because this aria does not have the Bolero beats. I guess just do the bolero when the song plays. The judges will have no way of knowing whether we are on the beats oroffthe beats.

I have one to add, but it's not entirely Rumba, we did a Rumba/Cha-Cha routine to in our social intermediate class and I'm kinda sick of the song cause I've heard it so much, lol but anyways it's Derroche by Ana Belen.

Oh wow! That's your site? It's an excellent resource. I came across it a while back and I've used it a lot since then. I've actually ran through and listened to samples for the entirely of a few of the lists and I think at least a third of my current Cha Cha playlist is from your suggestions. Can I make a suggestion of my own though? :) You should add more to the Tango section, It's severely lacking compared to the others...
