TAKE THE TEST AND FACE THE TRUTH!
by Loui Tucker
Editor's Note: This has been floating around the Internet for a few weeks and it's circulating back and forth between the same people so it's about time someone put it on the web.

Is dancing taking over our life? Have you heard whispers that you're becoming addicted to dance? Are you afraid that you or a loved one is becoming a dance-aholic? Take this simple test, or take it on behalf of someone you care about. However painful it might be, it's time you faced the truth.

Count 1 point for every YES answer.

* You listen to dance music at times when you cannot possibly dance -- i.e. on your car stereo, with headphones while taking public transportation, on airplanes. Give yourself an additional point if you have actually taken your hands off the steering wheel while driving in order to clap your hands at the spot in the music where you would clap if you were dancing.

* More than 50% of the t-shirts in your wardrobe are dance-related. Give yourself an extra point if any of them are no longer the right size or are too worn to wear, but you keep them anyway for sentimental reasons because they remind you of a special dance event.

* When you are debating whether or not to buy a new article of clothing, a chief factor in the decision is whether or not you can wear it dancing.

* You go to non-dance social functions with other dancers but you cannot carry on a conversation for longer than 15 minutes without talking about dance. (This includes gossiping about people at dance class!)

* You have to explain at least once a week that you missed some over-hyped television program, a business function or social event because it conflicted with dance class.

* What you eat for dinner depends on whether you're going dancing afterwards (nothing too heavy, no garlic or onions).

*Even though you are an advanced dancer, you drop in on the beginners classes at least once a month just in case they are doing a beginner dance you've never learned.

* At least once a month you phone or e-mail another dancer to find out whether he/she is going to a dance class. Give yourself another point if, when you find out he/she is not going dancing, you go anyway.

* You subscribe to more than one dance-related magazine or newsletter -- The Grapevine, Rokdim, Nirkoda, Let's Dance, New Zealand Folk Dancer, etc.

* At least two gifts per year (received or given) are dance-related -- clothing, music, video, money for dance camp, etc.

* The photos on your desk at work include at least one of you at a dance-related event.

* You plan business trips and vacations so as to avoid missing your favorite local dance classes, i.e. leaving the morning after the class and/or arriving the afternoon before the class.

* You get information about dancing in the area of your vacation or business trip, and pack dance clothing so you can dance while you're there. Two extra points if you pack extra dance gear on business trips just in case your returning afternoon flight is delayed and you have to drive from the airport directly to class instead of going home to change clothes.

* Your car is adorned with (1 point for each)
Dance-related personalized license plate
Dance-related bumpersticker
Dance-related license plate holder

* You have, at least once in the past year, spent more time driving to a dance event than you knew you would actually spend dancing, i.e. one hour each way commuting to dance less than two hours.

* You use your computer for dance-related activities. (1 point for each)
You netsurf for dance-related websites.
You have e-mail relationships with other dancers in which you write about dance-related activities
You check "alt.rec.folkdance" for news of dance events
You subscribe to a mailing list organized around dance-related topics.
You maintain a dance-related website.
Your e-mail address, password, or screen-saver is dance-related!

* If you have pets, at least one of them has a dance-related name -- a cat named Debki, a dog named Zwiefacher, a bird named Polka.

* You don't know the last name of at least five dancers, but refer to them descriptively instead as something like "David Who Usually Dances with Shoshana" or "Rachel The Tall Blond Who Wears Leggings and Long T-shirts."

SCORING:
15 or more. Mayday, mayday. Houston, we have a serious dance problem. Don't be surprised if your friends organize an intervention to confront you with your addiction. You can deal with problem directly by checking your phone book for the local 12-step-hop program in your area.
11-14. You're a borderline dance-aholic. With some effort on your part you can take back control of your life without outside help. It may be enough to cut out dancing between dance classes.
6-10. Not to worry. You're one of those social dancers. You can take it or leave it. You can walk off the dance floor anytime. Dance-aholics view you with suspicion.
1-5. Are you kidding? Are you taking this test as a joke? You probably don't know a step-hop from a pivot. Get outta here -- you wouldn't even watch dance-related television programs!

Oh lord, I'd be off the charts!

* When you are debating whether or not to buy a new article of clothing, a chief factor in the decision is whether or not you can wear it dancing.
This one irks me to no end! Stuff I would buy normally before I can't now because it's not made out of material that breathes!!!!!!

Too fun! May I add this to my sight? I think this should definately be shared with dancers EVERYWHERE!

I won't give my score, but with a little help I'll be a full blown dance-aholic in no time!

Don't see why not. Apparently, this joke/quiz circulated pretty heavily on the web and through email, which makes it public domain, in my book. Just give credit to the author, and have at it. I pulled it down from http://www.havetodance.com/articles/bjod.html

Ouch! That hurt. I wanted to be an addict. You got 11, and even that is higher than my score. I am just a suspicious social dancer.

suek

only eleven for me...maybe we should rewrite this one...

add:

make vacation plans that align with dancing availability: no more beach vacations to remote areas without good dancing

listen to music with an agenda: not just simply finding the beat, or the place I'd clap, but "where's the bottom, where's the middle" and whatever other musicality exercise is obsessing you today.

then I'd be over the top too.

Notice something about the survey? There is not one question about how often the person dances. That is what makes an addict. The other stuff would make them addicted to the paraphernalia. (Did I spell that correctly?)

Silly me. I just assumed that dancing every day was a given. I didn't even miss the "how often do you dance" question. You're right. We should change the quiz to add that in. And the vacation question sounds good to me, too. :)

Hmm, I only scored an 8...but give me some time and I know I'll score a lot higher! :P

I can think of a few questions that would should have been on this test:

You're caught practicing dance steps at work (extra point if you're co-workers are watching and you ignore them!).

When you're hanging out with your non-dance friends, you can't go 5 minutes without talking about dancing.

When you're trying to learn more about someone you want to ask out on a date, the first thing you ask them is "do you dance?".

All of the new music you purchase is for dance practice, anything else would be ridiculous! (extra point if you ask the music store owner if the latest album has any Rumbas on it).

You spend more money each month on dance class and new dance clothes than you do on groceries.

Yep, I'm in the mayday category as well . . . way too high, oh, and those advanced danceers that go to beginner's class . . . they're really there to take the "basics" class!

another good question is how many pairs of dance shoes you own.

Okay, I've decided...

I am definately adding this quiz to my website and intend to add the suggested questions posted here. I'll give credit to the original author and well as the DF discussion family. Do you think the scoring should be adjusted if additional questions are added?

pygmalion
12-03-2003, 07:19 PM
Hehe! PLEASE don't ask any questions about how many shoes. People already suspect I'm nuts. If I answer that one honestly, they'll know for sure.

I copied the quiz, changed the format, added suggested questions here, updated "score" leves, and created as a fillable PDF document. To download, follow this link: http://www.dancersdreamland.com/fundanceaholic.pdf

Note: You will need Adobe Acrobat to download this document. To download Adobe Acrobat for free, follow this link: http://www.dancersdreamland.com/fundanceaholic.pdf

Note: A fillable PDf is a document which contains areas you can manually type or enter information into. For example, in this quiz, you can "click" on the empty boxes and the form will automatically add a check mark. At the bottom of the document, you can enter your score above the underline. Then save the document to your computer or print for future reference.

Let me know if you have other questions you think should be added. Enjoy!

Hmmmmmm I scored WAY lower on your quiz.... I wonder why....

Probably because the "taking lessons" questions don't apply to me right now, but if they did in fact, I would be off the scale.

Perhaps add this one:

I've contemplated teaching just so I can dance MORE...
Bonus if you actually *do* or *did* teach.
**Extra** bonus if you realized you needed more training before continuing teaching.

By the way it is great having you in our forums. :)

Now to some totally unrelated items. Could you pass the info. on your yahoo group if you don't mind me joining in. And also your "East Coast West Coast..." signature line reminds me of the divisions between swing...is that where that comes from?

Thanks and yes yes yes. A while back (couple years I guess) there was a HUGE-mongous debate over Lindy Hop v. WCS. Apparently, the older crowd on the West Coast called Lindy Hop just that: WCS while here on the East Coast it was oft called Jitterbug/Lindy/Swing/or something else depending on your area. I thought it was all ridiculous, but you know how it is. At that time there was this "Delta Commercial" floating around the internet that basically said "We'll fly you to you h* and back lickety split. East Coast, west coast it don't matter". I found it funny and adopted it as my tag line. Very few people have actually "gotten" it. :)

Hmmmmmm I scored WAY lower on your quiz.... I wonder why....

On my version of the quiz, I added the questions posted in the Forum here and I ajdusted the scoring levels to percentages. I wasn't sure how the scoring levels were done on the original quiz, so I adjusted them to fit equal percents...I don't remember what the percentage is now, though.

Here's some more questions for the quiz...

**You take your children to dance events with you and you dance more with your child than your husband/wife.

** You've ever taken an newborn to a dance comp (Gabriella went to M2K at 6 weeks - hee hee hee).

**Your toddler knows how to count to 8 (and only 8) but with all the appropriate "&'s" depending on what dance you are counting... IE 4&1, 2, 3 if you are working on a cha cha... - Get a bonus on this one if your toddler is less than 2!

**Your toddler can already tell the difference between ballroom music styles - Get a bonus on this one if your toddler is less than 2!

**Your toddler has learned the Mambo basic and does it when she hears a Mambo (and at no other time) - Get a bonus on this one if your toddler is less than 2!

**Your child has been to as many dance classes *outside* the womb as inside.

**Your coach carries your child during your lesson.

**The other students in your studio all know your child by name and her birthday, etc.
