Just curious, folks. We make fun, but be honest. How many of you ... macarena?

I generally don't care for line dancing, but was able to get into this one enough to do it a few times.

I have never seriously macarenad... I think I tried once but couldn't bring myself to really do it... it's the type of repulsion that morks it's way up my spine.

I was one of those exceptionally unfortunate people to have to live through the first wave of Macarena in its home country of Spain. It would take the Spaniards to invent something like it. I had the double misfortune to move back to the United States a year or two later, when it was first catching on here. So, I decided to leave the country again. Oddly enough, it lasted so long, I almost considered setting up camp in Djibouti until the coast cleared, but a friend in Djibouti advised me against it. It had even taken hold there. You just cannot escape such things.
What does mork mean?

I join the "never macerena even if I am being skinned alive" club. I have never done the macerena. I have danced while that was playing, but I've always done my own thing. :) I think Swing Kitten described my feelings pretty well. [shudder...shiver just thinking about it!!]

"morks" translates into works Will35?!!?

I get it. Morks=works. Hey, the Macarena would be a pretty good torture technique, you know, being skinned alive, the trick with the honey on the anthill, the iron maiden, and the macarena.

I have never seriously macarenad...
Sarah tries desperately to imagine someone macarening seriously.
I imagine that it would probably look somewhat Monty-python-ish.
I answered - time for a bathroom-break. Hey, YKIOK,IJNMK.

Cheers

You described it completely for me. What I'm even more incredulous about is how long that evil abomination stayed around! YIKES!
I voted "Just Shoot Me"

As Phoebe from friends said:

"Oh, I wish could, but I really don't want to."

Not on your life . . .

To be really honest, one of my best friends is Jewish, and he was married last month, and for fun and for their first wedding dance together, the DJ played the Macarena and we all had to dance up on the dance floor with them . . . then the real wedding dance song was played.

I suffered all through the dance . . . and probably was one of handful of individuals that really knew how to do it correctly!

Yes. I went to a wedding recently, too, and the DJ had this macarena obsession. He wouldn't let anyone escape. So what the heck, I did it. Usually, though, I try to find an empty corner and go samba. Much more fun for me. :)

Yep . . . I tried to find the bathroom real quickly, but Bruce knew that Care and I were dancers and called us out by name to get it started.

We also did Cha Cha and WCS and NC2S that day, and we kept to basics so we wouldn't stand out. People were coming up to us afterward, asking for lessons, said we should be on TV, etc. I guess, even doing the basics, with no flashy arms styling, etc., stood out.

I can't believe it, Vince. I was talking with one of my teachers about that yesterday. I think that one of the big differences between good and developing dancers is that good dancers can make the simplest moves look great. Even if you tone down the styling, it's hard to hide quality and dancing experience.

Sometmes, Care and I hate to get up to dance, because it looks like we're showing off (which I've been told we doing at other weddings), but we are not. We are really toned down. It just must be that "look."

The Macarena was probably given a boost when the USA women's gymnastics team performed this in the 96 Olympics in an after events show.

Well ppl are ALWAYS going to find something to comment about. I just spend the whole day on sudnay help hubbie pick out a suit for his xmas party so the other managers wont talk **** about him being lower class and not fit to bring to upscale things ( he doesn't have to wear suits for his job) and of course as I've now said they talk s aabout him a buying so thing new 2 looking very fashionable and 3 being incredibly hot looking ( oh such a horrible thing!)

I empathize Tasche, Vince!! It's one thing if people are positive, but to beat down on somone by speaking about them in a derogatory fashion is dead wrong. Vince, I personally think it's wonderful seeing people who know how to dance doing their thing, as long as they don't charge in and take over the floor by doing moves that require a large amount of floor space thus crowding other people out. It's probably envy at someone else's good fortune.

As for the macerena I must say that it is definitely good as an exercise that bonds a lot of people together, who wouldn't necessarily do other dances etc. :) But still the lame idea of masses doing the same thing over and over and over....My poor head is aching. I better go and lie down. :)

We have three weddings to go to this month, and two of the three know that we dance as our main hobby. They have asked us if we get out on the floor when the music starts, so that everyone would follow suit and get to some dancing.

We said we would, so I guess we've opended ourselves for any comments this time. We'll see, whether the comments are complimentary or derogatory . . .

"Macarena, here we come . . . . . . . . ."

I hope this doesn't backfire on them... sometimes seeing a really good couple on the floor is more likely to keep other people off the floor then get them on it!

Keep us posted...

Maybe only start with some side-to-side-sway, just to get a few others up and on the floor?

Oh sure, that's easier said than done! Maybe if they don't play any music???

I was thinking the same as SD. People will probably be too intimidated to dance, after seeing the two of you -- even if you keep your moves and styling to a minimum. Hmm.

Vince A
12-03-2003, 05:09 PM
Oh well . . . we were invited. There is music and we love to dance. If they are intimidated . . . it's their problem! We (like I discussed this today with Care) are going to dance!

OK. Enough of this macarena stuff. I just went to the men's room, and while standing there watering the flowers, I loudly broke out into "He-e-y Macarena" . . . .

(I know, I know . . . too much info for some of you).

Actually you make a good point Pygmalion, and one which I totally agree with. It is dances like these that are common all over and help with bonding during social gatherings. And anything that gets people up and dancing is good. In fact I am the one who at our monthly social dances abuses a good dance, whether it be a foxtrot or salsa or swing or...and grab people who don't know how to dance and just move to the music with them. That's a sacrifice as I do know and love dancing properly to these, BUT anything to get people loving dance the way I do. However, there is something about the macerena and dance songs of its ilk that just rub me the wrong way!!! YMCA is aother one of those.

As a kid I always got on the dance floor when the macerena played as the adults would trap me as I quietly tried to slip away. Since I was forced to dance I made sure I had a good time! The evil side in me used to come out. Often I would mock every single move of the macerena. Alternatively I would choreograph my own moves to it.

Now as an adult I am suddenly not there when the song comes on and people wonder why I'm not around as I love dancing a lot. C'est la vie!
