View Full Version : Where is the strangest place you've ever danced at?

Yesterday I went to see a DJ/muso friend playing at one of those car yard promotion thingies. It was a beautiful day, so everyone would rather go to the beach than shopping for a car. There were NO customer insight & the staff looked like they'd rather be at the beach too  .
So my DJ friend put on some good salsa and we started dancing on the wooden deck area  . We had so much fun dancing out there even though the only audience were some bored staff and a bunch of new cars  !
We put on a great show just for ourselves & had the best fun :bouncy: !
Have you even danced at any unusual places...?

I got a friend who is usually shy until she hears the music :P (crazy R&B dancer!)
One night after clubbing we went to get a late night souvlaki. We parked as her favourite song came on the radio. So she started dancing right there in the middle of the street  .....!

This is a weeky ritual for us during the summer months. There's a little cafe on the beach front that hires our favourite DJ to play salsa every Sunday afternoon til evening :D . We got people dancing everywhere within earshot of the music! Musician sometimes bring their instruments to jam along & you should see how their kids DANCE (little heartbreakers in the making)!

Hmm...let's see. Strangest place I've ever danced might just be at this Chinese restuarant. Our favorite band was playing there, (which in itself was very odd). There was no room to dance it was only for dinner entertainment. So we ended up dancing in this corner where the waiters/waitresses kept coming out of the kitchen and practically running them over. It was a lot of fun.

Once I danced in a parking garage because there was a lot of space there and we were practicing a routine, another time some friends and I did some line dancing on the pavement at an art and craft fair because the DJ was playing country music. We had quite an audience and some tried to jump in and pick up our line dance too!

Dancing was really good at the Open. Nice big dance floor, plenty of room to dance. Lots of familar faces and lots of new people too. All in all a fun time. I think the level of competitor's was lower than expected, but the Showcases and Cabaret were great!!! Oh, and the Young Adult was awesome. Those kids are going to be the next superstars! Well most of the dancing was after midnight when the competitions ended, but there was plenty of dancing in between competitions sometimes an hour or so and lots of dancing in the afternoon before most of the events started. The only problems we found was our seats were in the balcony, so we had quite a walk to get down to the floor each time there was a break and we got to dance. But the view was super cool. No one sitting in our way and everyone could see the whole floor. They are going to have it in San Jose next year too. Great!

In San Jose again? I plan to work on getting a new Pro and competing in "Swing Only" events, maybe even some Lindy events if I can learn it from one of the other moderators on the DF who lives close by.
I've already started in on Salsa . . . that could make a fun event as well.

I lindy-hopped in Vatican Square on New Year's Eve of the millenium, with fireworks raining down, the Pope giving a speech, Italy's top band playing in the piazza (paid for by the church), and with half a million people drinking champagne from the real wine glasses they'd brought with them in their jackets' pockets.
Four days later, in a Mithraic temple (2000 years ago), 3 levels beneath Rome, at the stone-benched room where members of this cult slaughtered bulls and then drank their blood.

One of the most fun places I danced was at the "Mextravaganza", a huge all-day/night musical event in Cabo San Lucas two summers ago. A fabulous group "Ozomatli" came on and I just started to salsa! Some guy grabbed my hand and we started dancing together! The place was a dirt field and the dust storm we created was hilarious!

Whilst not the strangest place, one of the nicest places I have danced salsachinita is at Darling Harbour (Sydney)! Darling Harbour is just that, a harbour and with hugh sidewalk type thingys. It also has various shops/restaurants along in. When I was there, there was the Bacardi festival and one or two other events I think, but don't remember exactly  (There was a party at one of the venues at Darling Harbour but it was packed. You could hear the music from outside. My friends and I sat outside and danced there instead :D )
That is one of the best experiences I have had because until then, I had never danced in an open space, warm air (moonlight sky) like that  Yes, like some of you, I have danced in the street, :D but there was just something about Darling Harbour sigh

Wow! That harbor in Sydney sounds cool!
Just last summer, a bunch of us local salseras got together for a BBQ at a local park. One of the guys brought a boom box and we cranked the salsa tunes. We were all dancing, in sandals, dust flying, with stunned Japanese picnic goers viewing with mouths agape! Particularly memorable was doing the "Mayonnaise Dance" & "La Bomba". What a hoot!

This will not compare to some of the more exotic tales I read about, but my colllege Social Dancing classes were taught in the Applied Science building, and if we were still dancing during class change, the biology or chemistry or whatever class next door would look in on us. You could almost read the envy on their face "I'm sitting through a lecture on the ecosystem, and these folks are dancing!"
That, and a new Mexican restaurant opened up in my hometown, and I was eating with a friend, and there was this nutty group of Mexican singers going to EVERY table and singing crazy songs, like "Kung-Fu Fighting" or whatever in Spanish. I knew they'd come to my table eventually, so I said to the guy, "Play a Mambo, I want to dance with one of these beautiful Ladies!" So I danced with the girl that had the tamborine, and my friend I was eating with shook the tamborine! It was fun, and she was a pretty good dancer!

That was some 70's song (I think 70's), Tom Jones sings it (the "Sex Bomb" guy).

Sorry to say, I remember it. Hopeless lyrics. My brother had a copy of the 45. Yes, a 45 rpm vinyl record. Those were the days. I don't remember the name of the original group -- Tom Jones did (IMHO) a much more interesting cover version.

Artist? Carl Douglas. Like who would have remembered that? Yeesh.
Lyrics? Just for the heck of it.
Kung Fu Fighting
Carl Douglas
Everybody was kung-fu fighting
Those cats were fast as lightning
In fact it was a little bit frightning
But they fought with expert timing
They were funky China men from funky Chinatown
They were chopping them up and they were chopping them down
It's an ancient Chineese art and everybody knew their part
From a feint into a slip, and kicking from the hip
Everybody was kung-fu fighting
Those cats were fast as lightning
In fact it was a little bit frightning
But they fought with expert timing
There was funky Billy Chin and little Sammy Chung
He said here comes the big boss, lets get it on
We took a bow and made a stand, started swinging with the hand
The sudden motion made me skip now we're into a brand knew trip
Everybody was kung-fu fighting
Those cats were fast as lightning
In fact it was a little bit frightning
But they did it with expert timing
(repeat)..make sure you have expert timing
Kung-fu fighting, had to be fast as lightning

Did I mention that I was raised on Tom Jones? My big sisters (grown when I was born) were IN LOVE with him and Englebert Humperdink. Sick, sick girls. LOL. I always preferred Tom Jones. That guy has sex appeal -- even now, when he's a relatively old guy. Yup. He knows how to wrap his voice around some soulful lyrics. Not bad, for a guy from Wales. 8)

When swing dancing became so popular a few years back, every club in Atlanta felt the need to start a "swing night". Before it was all over, I had danced in a fetish club, a sushi bar, and a 24-hour club frequented by bikers and strippers. LOL
2 stories about fun but odd dancing situations:
Some friends and I went to see Jerry Lee Lewis when he was playing a big Country dance club in Atlanta. A dozen kids with greased hair and two-toned shoes doing swing moves on a floor full of hundreds of cowboy hats and stetson boots!
About that same time, a bunch of us went to Athens, GA for a concert and during the opening act, the entire downtown area lost power. The opening act was a local Ska/Swing band and so even though they had no microphone for the lead singer, the horns and drums kept right on playing. With no lights or air conditioning, the venue opened the doors and we all spilled out onto the sidewalks to dance. It gave the local college kids something stare at as they milled around in the dark. :-D

I know I'm very late with a response, but I have danced at a very strange place this morning. I had a doctorsappointment and we were waiting for a long time all ready. Then my boyfriend (who is a salsero too) and I heard salsa music. Since it clearly was going to take some more time before we were gonna get called in we started to dance. And salsa music kept on playing (some kind of radio programm was on so: 1 hour of salsa) so we did some salsa, merengue, mambo and even bachata for 45 minutes. I really didn't care about all the people watching, while I'm normally very shy. The doctor is settled in a hospital so there was enough space. It was really fun and we got a big applause.

Way to go Missy!
I was in the Fanuel Hall Market Place back before the holidays last year. Unfortunately it was just me and no one else to dance with. I probably knew enough Rumba and Cha-Cha that if I had some one to dance with we could have had some fun dancing to some music being played by two guys with a guitar and bongo drums. Great stuff! Bought a CD!
Actually danced a basic rumba in an art museum last summer with my most recent girlfriend. It was fun and sweet. Unfortunately, she never really took to the dancing, and now the relationship has been over for a few weeks. (Although dancing didn't seem to be an issue, I now hope to find some one who is at least open to dancing, but after I have spent some time recovering.)
Not sure anyone can top Vince's experience for strangeness, and frankly, I'm not sure I'd even try!

You know, I'd love to dance somewhere strange if an opportunity comes my way. It's one of those things you've got to do before you are 80, isn't it? Of course, being a salsa dancer who doesn't know how to dance to any other type of music (well, other than merengue, cha cha and bachata) limits your opportunity somewhat.
Some of my salsa pals were in a car playing a salsa CD on the way back from a good night, and when their favourite song came on, they just couldn't resist stopping the car, bursting out and dancing on the street (you can see some photos of this at http://www.salsaholics.co.uk/pics/200404/index.html). I wasn't there... :(
Then there was dancing in a waiting room at Barcelona Airport. I was there but my knee was swallen and I couldn't walk, never mind dance :(

Strangest place ?
Well, I would not call the beach a strange place, since we actualy had come for this.
The barge a few hundred yards from the beach, just floating away on the ocean was quite peculiar.
During my time in LA for the congress we went to the alley (that funy mexican street down town where everything is "cheaper") and after not even a quarter of a block, we passed in front of a shop playing salsa. Well obviously, a friend of mine grabed one of the girl and started dancing with her right there in front of the shop. The owner then came out and danced a bit with her, then 2 other guys came in and stole her from one another.
Before you know it, there was an 8 couple rueda in the middle of the alley ! Great souvenir (and I actually caught that one on tape ;) )
But I believe the most bewildered looks I ever got was someplace where there actually was no music
In the airport in NYC while waiting for a connecting flight, a few bewildered looks, but hey, there were like 40 something salseros around, so no big scary looks.
Then once, coming out of a lesson, there were 4 couples of us waiting for the metro, 10PM (so still a lot of people around)
The metro was not coming, we were all in a good mood, talking about salsa, as usual, and where we had danced, where we had not...
Someone just said " I've never done it in the metro"
Of course someone (not me, I swear you honour, I'm inocent) had to burst out and say "then let's !"
And there you go, four couples lost in a rueda with no music playing whatsoever on the metro peer...
(we actualy tried to keep dancing inside the metro, but way to much people... which is a good thing, caus I believe it moves so much we would have fallen down anyways !)

Okay I've danced salsa barefoot in a cafe :D -- but it doesn't really count as a particularly strange place since it was inside the UK congress venue, with salsa music blasting in the hall all day and night. The people working at the place seemed to think it was amusing anyway, and I enjoyed it too  (even though it made my sore feet worse -- dancing LA style barefoot on concrete floor is not the most sensible thing to do after 5 workshops ).

I danced my first salsa dance, with no one else on the dance floor, in a night club, to jazz music which pretended to be latin, barefoot. I asked a friend to dance and as we were dancing she challenged me and while dancing I kicked of my sandals. They went flying off and luckily no one was hurt.

I found myself doing the samba - alone - in the aisles of the department store about an hour ago. The music was soooo gooooooood! I just couldn't help it! I tried to keep from getting too far into it, people were starting to watch the white girl shaking her tushie in the store. :?:  :?: It's bad enough when I look so different than everyone else, it just compounds it when I start dancing. Really draws attention to myself.

My last class reunion! That probably doesn't sound too strange to everyone else, but having been to many previous reunions and only sat and watched others while wishing I could get up and dance too, this reunion was different. My dh and I have been taking lessons for a couple years so we were among the dancers!
Now everywhere I dance - weddings, concerts, and reunions - is strange and wonderful because I never dreamed I'd be doing it.

Almost got another one this week end : a chocolat store. We were browsing through the wonderfull different flavours, when suddenly the latest marc Anthony poped on the radio. I know MA is not the absolute sonero, but some of the work he has done on his latest album really moves me.
I grabed the girl I was with and asked her to dance, but she argued that putting our huge bags down, taking our 3 layers of jackets and sweater off in the midle of a tiny chocolate store to dance around amongts the incoming croud of customers would not be a very good idea, and the moment was gone.
Besides, she was right...
But still...

In the summer I dance regularly with my best friend on her roof top. Actually it's not supposed to be walked on because evenso its a flat roof it's still tilted with no raillings around it and her house has 4 floors.
Everytime I have to wait for a bus I practise new steps at the busstop.

I teach high school and have done some very basic tap dancing.
Tacad's story reminds me....
I was a senior in high school. Everybody knew I danced C&W. Even the teacher. We were studying something, I can't even remember how this all tied together, it seems like it was a U.S. something-or-other class. Anyhoo... He wanted to demonstrate the swing (I can't remember how it was pertinent to class, but whatever) and I got drafted to dance with my teacher in front of class.
He wasn't a bad dancer. But it was kind of un-cool to be dancing with my teacher. (I remember this particular teacher looked like an overgrown leprechaun and was kinda geeky. Definitely not one of the "cool" teachers. LOL)
i did a salsa dance for my 4th grade students recently (by request). they loved it!!! i ve never danced for my students before, and now, they all want to learn salsa! :D
the other interesting place ive danced was while waiting in the lines at magic mountain. i went with a bunch of salsero friends to MM and danced to no music while we waited in lines. needless to say, people were staring! :D
it was fun. 8)
...and oh, ive also danced on my treadmill.

There goes. This can be the extar curricular activity that you supervise. From waht i knwo teachers usually do something extra in addition to just teaching....
i taught my students the basic to salsa and cha cha and they cant get enough!
yes, students need a break from the daily routine once in a while to have some (different kind of) fun! 8)

Last summer my husband and I went on a 15-day whitewater rafting trip in the Grand Canyon. The trip included a string quartet. The music part of the trip was organized by a violinist who loves the canyon and loves string quartets. If my memory is correct, this was the 17th trip he had been on. Most of the music he brought was traditional classical stuff, but one morning after breakfast they played some lighter pieces that were danceable. There was a big stretch of nice moist firm sand (the river level fluctuates daily, and it was low tide that morning), so we danced a tango, foxtrot and east coast swing. After the tango we looked back at our tracks in the sand, and they looked very strange! Another evening they played the tango again, as well as a west coast swing and a rumba. At that site the sand was dry and had been walked all over, so it was more lumpy. I was amused to see our slot for west coast was very well defined at the end of the dance.
This was an incredible experience because
(1) We were in the Grand Canyon. If you've seen it from above, you know that pictures can't capture its beauty, but the view from above can't begin to compare with what you see at the bottom. Every hour of every day we were surrounded by unbelievable vistas. There is nothing like it in the world.
(2) We had wonderful music played by musicians who loved what they were playing. Live music always has its own special magic.
(3) The musicians were playing for us to dance. It wasn't a dance venue where we showed up with lots of other people -- there was just us and the music.
The violinist told us many people on previous trips had tried to tango when they played that piece of music, but we were the first who actually looked like we knew what we were doing.
I will never forget it....

Grocery store. Sometimes the store where I shop will play a good rumba or chacha over the Muzak system, and I'll dance all by myself down the aisles. I don't like grocery shopping but a good tune to dance to makes it bearable.

Drybags inside very large cooler for violins and viola, drybag strapped on top of cooler for cello. In addition, the cello was not wood, but a new composite material that is not sensitive to moisture or ambient heat. The instrument raft was rowed by one of the more experienced guides. (Only one raft, rowed by a relative novice, flipped during the whole trip.)
I was on the instrument raft the first morning of the trip and was scared stiff of landing on top of the cello during bumpy parts (I didn't have my "sealegs" yet).
Wow. When I used to play the cello, the main problem was keeping it from drying out in the winter. I never had to deal with the opposite problem!
I guess my weirdest place is a singles squash court. Small beans compared to some of the stories here!

There was also the problem of rain, which ended a couple of the concerts. When it started to sprinkle during one concert, they had a guide hold a large umbrella over the musicians. At that point I stopped listening to the music, because I was fascinated at his ability to hold the umbrella in his ourstretched arms for minute after minute. Rowing evidently was very good for him! It eventually started raining harder and the musicians gave up before the guide did.
