Personally, the only dance I have ever disliked (Out of everything I have tried) is modern dance. This isn't a slam at modern dancers as I do have respec for them but I dislike doing modern. If modern dance was the only dance option I could have I would quit dancing. I have always wondered why I dislike it but I am not completely sure. Perhaps someone else feels the same as me.

Anyways, is there anything you dislike?

I run like the wind when a polka comes on. Just don't care for it; can't really explain why.

well, I'm of 100% polish stock so I am not even at liberty to contemplate my attitude about the polka...but I break out in a rash over country line dancing and country two step....I postively loathe swing (both coasts)...am not big into hustle...still, I'd take them all over not dancing

I'll do almost any partner dance that's playing if I know it. That said, I'll have to admit that meringue is not exactly one of my favorites.

Even though I enjoyed the class I took on Hustle five years ago I later found that I didn't enjoy the dance.

Don't care for Merengue and Foxtrot, but will do so upon request.

Don't want anything to do with line dancing.

WCS I didn't want to touch until I had a "revelation" two years ago.

I remember that modern dance was taught at my high school. There was only one guy who took it.

the polka is bohemian, not polish.

I know that saying this is a heresey, but except for rueda, I really don't like Salsa. It's because I don't like the music, more than because I don't like the actual dance...but rueda is so cool it makes up for me not liking the music.

Could it have something o do with being forced to watch Lawrence Welk ata young age? It sure did for me.

Ahh let's see, for me, it's polka, quick-step and meringue in the partner realm.

Outside of that, hip-hop and all that Brittney Spears and her ilk's type of stage dancing does zilch for me. Braodway stage dancing I could say the same for, no thanks.

That's kind of why I don't like Salsa music. It was blasted all hours of the day and night during the summer in the neighborhood I used to live in in New Jersey, usually through blown speakers, and accompanied by drunken guys throwing beer bottles at the walls of the burnt-out houses across the street (from arson a few years before I moved in).

ME dancing ballet (as a child), hated it (of course I like to watch professionals).

ME dancing belly (disaster).

Meringue also gets on my nerves, but one of the guys like to take two girls to dance with, then it's more fun cause I can have fun with the other girl.

Waltz I also found a little too boring for my taste (but I didn't learn much).

I don't care for non-partner dancing at all. I take ballet class once a week, but I do it more for a work out. Out of partner dances I am not a big fan of merengue, salsa, swing and hustle (least favorite first), but I will do them if I am nicely asked. I won't do country dancing and night club two-step, even if I am nicely asked. I am not very familiar with polka or AT (just a couple of group classes for both), so I will not comment on those two.

Can't stand Swing, which is weird because I love big band music. I hate triple swing three times as much as single swing.

I will hide in the ladies' room to avoid a foxtrot, but I think I will love it after I iron out a few more technical flaws. Right now, it feels a lot like doing calculus while walking a tightrope. Perhaps also while balancing a spoon on my nose.

hmm...any country/line dancing. 2 wks ago, I would've said WCS, but happened to see a nice one done on "So you think you can dance" ;)
So while it may not be totally painful to watch (or listen to), I'll probably continue to hide if a WCS song ever comes on at a social...I think that in general, any style where I'm constrained to a "slot" is no good.

I like Bachata, though.

I suppose any dance/dancing whose accompanying music I find uninspiring, or whose dancers cannot satisfactorily interpret the music. A lot of dances & styles sometimes fall into this category

From my first taste of it tonight in a lesson, I don't think I like 2 Step. I'm not ready to write it off, yet, but I'm not feeling it.

I can't stand bolero. Don't like WCS.

I find salsa boring, usually.

I am getting tired of WCS. Maybe it's because I have learned a lot of it, but it seems rather boring to me. I also don't care for the Argentine Tango, but I think that's because you have to dance it really with someone you have an attraction for. So, I think that I would like it if I ever got a partner that I really liked etc. It's just that the people that are in the class are older, and I don't care to get close to the older guys lol.

*I'll still dance everything though. I won't hide or anything like that even when I don't care for the dances lol. ;)

Boring? You've got to be kidding!

I'd give odds that I have been dancing longer than most individuals on the DF, and I've yet to find a single dance - socially or competitively - that IS boring. Hell, I still find line dancing fun, and after the fourth wall . . . it's the same dance until the end of the song. It's about being in the moment.

Some may be less challenging that others, but if you truy love to dance, none of them should be boring. You don't have to be an expert in any of them . . . if you are you'd better be teaching and/or competing! Just do a little of each one.

The right person can make your 2 Step exciting and your WCS a favorite dance!

Sorry for going off . . .

I agree completely with your last line! I dance some dances really well with certain people, so I understand what you are trying to say! ;)

I agree with you, mostly.

Yeah, the partner makes a huge difference...but some dances (as in, the collected body of steps, etc...sans partner) just don't do it for me.

Hmmm, a dance I don't care for....Hmmmm......

Country western music as a genre doesn't get me and many of the leaders can't.. so that puts me off that type of dance although with the right music and leader it's a lot of fun...

Bolero and Balboa - extreme dances on either end of the tempo scale can be challenging but I like them...

If I like the music I like to dance. It basically boils down to that. And I haven't yet found movement I don't care for. There are plenty of styles that I CAN'T do (Balinese comes to mind with all the hand/arm/head stylized movements) but I don't dislike them.

As for the original question of Modern dance... A lot of times it seems to me that while ballet is looking for the prettiest way to make a line (no matter how difficult to attain), modern dance is deliberately looking for the ugliest way to interpret something. Many times Modern dances do not "speak" to me, even if I can appreciate the technique that went into it.

I think that not everyone can be so omnivorous when it comes to dancing. Some people just have stronger preferences. Maybe it is like food. Some people are just pickier than others. For me certain dances/types just do not have the appeal. I have been doing American style for many years, and have recently decided to specialize in smooth/standard for competitive purposes. Out of all dances smooth dances were the ones I liked most and even in rhythm my favorite dance is bolero which has many characteristics of smooth.
I don't like CW and Salsa music, and I think that in some ways CW versions of ballroom dances lack refinement I find so appealing about ballroom. Nightclub 2 step for me just lacks challenge, although some songs are very nice and relaxing.

It's not the dance but more the energy at the venue that might bug me. Then again I think I need try find someone to follow me around. That why they can tell me if I'm becoming a dance snob or if I'm just getting alittle headstrong again. But for the most part I enjoy dancing period.

snob
1. One who is convinced of and flaunts one's social superiority 2. One who despises one's inferiors and whose condecension arises from social or intellectual pretentsion.

Note the inclusion of "flaunts", "despises", and "pretension" in these definitions of "snob" straight out of a dictionary.
I think you can know more about something and not be a snob. It depends on how you handle it.

Tanya: Sounds to me like your Night Club Two Step partners aren't doing much to challenge you. Betcha I could keep you from snoozing.

HAve you seen BalletBoyz?

I find contemporary dance ( to watch) far more gripping than traditional ballet could ever be, and these guys know more about effortless lifts than your average circus acrobat, their bodies keep finding new ways to move across each other its passionate and amazing.
