I thought it would be interesting to report on some of the best salsa clubs in YOUR area. For me here in Atlanta, my favorite is called the Sanctuary. It has been around for years, and in my opinion plays the best music. Also, on Wednesday nights, Toungue and Groove has a great Salsa night. So what's going on in your city?

"Commonground" on Tuesday nights in Ithaca. That actually is the only regular salsa nightspot!! This thread probably will be useful for salarhythmns. I believe some time back he was trying to create such a list.

Hey Sagitta...I'm assuming that you are on one of my mailing
lists...or did I post that here in the forum?

Anyway, yes, that info would be great...

I've got a lot of info compiled from California, to New York
to Egypt and everything in between... :-)

If everyone can keep sending the names and addresses
of the clubs in this thread that would be really great.

Once I'm done compiling it (by the new year) I will post
a link here to where you can find it.

The list is pretty long and is sorted by geographic area so
any help anyone can give would be great.

I can't rate the best salsa clubs in Orlando. A lot of places have Latin or salsa nights. The newest place I know of is Club Cachet, which has a killer salsa party on Friday and Saturday nights. Check out the Dance venues in Orlando links for more info. :D

I'll give you the 411 in the Denver area

*Best spots D'Note on Sunday and Matties on Monday (Matties is heavy on the NY Mambo style of music and is where a lot of the local on2 dancers go)

*La Rumba on Thursdays and Saturdays (This is the longest running Latin club in Denver. Over 4 years now. The place is really nice, but it isn't a dancers club like D'Note and Matties. More meat market mentality)

*Once a month (usually the last Thurs or Fri of the month) we have a Salsa bash at the Pinnacle Club. It's in the penthouse of the Qwest Tower downtown. Beautiful place, usually a live band, definitely a sight to see!!

*Brand new clubs - Zanzibar on Saturdays, Supreme Court on Thursdays, Palladium on Saturdays. Just opened so I'll get back to you with a report!

Ok, here’s my contribution.

Wed:
• Lotus (R&B/salsa night) this place attracts a lot of good dancers in both genres, even if there’s no designated dance floor. It’s a place to been seen  with all the young & beautiful. No bands, DJ only.

Thur:
• Alumbra is where I go (not easy to find tho). Along with all Cuban Rueda dancers/students. It’s a riverfront place where you can dance outdoors! A cool Cuban son band Sambumbia play 10-12.
• Bullring is the place where all L.A. style dancers/students go. Got a big floor but the band plays salsa as if they are playing merengue :x (in my opinion).
• Cape Lounge is where all the latinos go to jam/hangout. It’s sooooo small there is no room to dance; but the music and atmosphere is cool. I go there to hang with my bros if I’m not in the mood to dance!

Fri:
• Gardenias (band/DJ) at the moment. Friday nights are really hard to do for some reason. At least this is a beautiful place with great music & room to dance.
• Copacabana (band/DJ) is one of those ‘Latin’ (AKA 20% salsa) clubs but they do dinner/floor show so you get lots of bucks/hens nights  there. Fri night is better (L.A. style dancers go there) then Sat, but I get annoyed by the sleaze factor there.
• Vineyard is more like a crowded pub, but a good salsa band is playing there. No room to dance!
• Heat (DJ only) is another R&B/Latin night. You are lucky to get a few salsa songs. It’s a young crowd with good dancers there. I go there for something different.

Sat:
• Stage is where all dancers go. The band is not bad, there is room to dance & people to dance with. It’s an older crowd with minimal Latinos there.
• Copacabana is where all the Latinos go. Mainly meringue/latin pop there on Sat.

Sun:
• Dock of the Bay at St. Kilda Sea Baths (4-10). This is the BEST thing in warmer mths! :P Our favourite DJ playing in the courtyard (beach front near the sand) & there are hundreds of people there dancing/watching. BYO instruments to jam along, be prepared to dance on any surface and don’t wear nice shoes (you will grind the soles down)!
• Night Cat is a must see thing unique to Melbourne. Mainly a jazz venue, Sunday nights there are two resident bands (alternating monthly) with one playing Latin Jazz and the other more salsa/timba. This is where raw, energetic descarga takes place every week. You will find the entire Latino clan here, with minimal studio dancers. We regulars dance behind the band with large crowd gathering. This place is super cool. The musicians accompanying international artists are known to be seen there. 8)

These are regular events. Quite often there are special events where eveyone will attend (so avoid regular venues on these nights coz you will have no one to dance with).

For all info regarding Mel scene (venues, bands, photos etc) check out www.latinlovers.com.au Links to Sydney & Adelaide are also provided.

You better!!! One of the things that I like to see is if the name matches the atmosphere. I'm particularly interested in "Zanzibar"!! Small island off the coast in East Africa, Arabic, part of Tanzania. Famous for the slave trade and cloves!! I grew up in Tanzania and so it could be an interesting connection. :)

 I'll let you guys know! Zanzibar is going to be an interesting one for me. I was a regular at the historic Zanzibar Club in Newark, New Jersey during the hayday of House music and the birth of Garage (More vocal, soulful house) So I'm going in with a whole different frame of mind

I went to Rumba down in Chicago on Saturday. It is on Hubbard St. and is a very cool place with lots of great dancers. Milwaukee has El Babalu on 6th & National with dancing on the weekends but I haven't been there yet.

Every Thursday night is Salsa night here in Jamaica at the Jonkanoo Lounge located on the grounds of the Hilton Hotel, New Kingston, Kingston. Majority of the music played is salsa but they intermingle it with merengue and cha cha and sometimes a little rumba and reggaeton. Ina fairly special room it boasts a wooden floor and a ceiling to floor glass wall on one side of the room. For those interested in just watching there is a bar to one side of the floor where the island's Number 1 bartender serves you the next best things this side of the world :D

On a Saturday night the salseros/as head to the Courtleigh Hotel for another salsa fix.....It's a smaller venue with marble floors but the music is just as good and JUST as inviting!lol

The best salsa venue in Scotland in my opinion is the Merlin in Edinburgh, but it's not a regular salsa club -- only two nights a month. Check the Salsaholics Anonymous (http://www.salsaholics.co.uk) events calendar for dates (Salsa Friday/Salsa Sunday).

As for regular clubs, try:

Thursdays - Havana, Glasgow (maybe also El Barrio and/or Cuba Norte, both Edinburgh)
Fridays - Cuba Norte, Edinburgh
Saturdays - Havana, Glasgow
Sundays - Mood, Edinburgh
Mondays - Medina, Edinburgh

Also worth a mention -- again, check the events calendar:
Some Fridays and Saturdays - Cuba Norte, Glasgow
Two Sundays each month - Tiger Tiger, Glasgow

* Edited to reflect changes that occurred in the last 6 months.

The Hotest salsa venue in NY City, IMHO, is Flamingo's On Mondays

Top Live Bands and DJ, probably attracts the best group of dancers in NY City.

Flamingo's is on 21st between 10th and 11th...

Tusdays - all there is Copa, there really isn't anything else happening on tuesdays. They have bands coming in, but not many dancers care to go since it turned so commercial. Even the salsa the DJ plays is usually commercial junk.

Wednesdays - Latin Quaters is way HOT, with top live bands and a good DJ.

Thursdays is the social-like dance at Cache, rotating DJs everyweek, and a performance at mid-night.

Certain Fridays - DJ rumbero has a social at Dance New York Studios.

A new club opend up in West Chester County which will bring top notch bands, begining Jun 18th... I can't wait.. Jimmy Sabater is going to be there... Sorry Rumbero, but Imma have to stop going to your dance socials.

God knows what is going on during the weekend. These are a play it by ear days, which usually are socials.

Here's our winter regulars, at the moment:

Wed - Lotus (R&B/Salsa) still HOT! After a bit of re-shuffling during Jan we've now got it going again 8) ! Can be very crowded, so serious salseros turn up early to get their fix.

Thur - Alumbra (salsa dura band/DJ playing Cuban mostly) is still pumping, though without the open-air effect of summer monthes it does get too packed & hot.
Next Blue had just re-started after the closure of Bullring. Yet to check it out.
Cape Lounge has now moved but the musos jammin' session is still on.

Fri - Cape (son band/DJ) is now the place to be. The band & DJ used to be at Gardenias (& got the night happenin') until very recently, so the crowd moved with them.
Gardenias is still good, if a little quiet.
Copa is still ok on a Friday night.

Sat - Viva (level 1 at the old Stage. Salsa dura band/DJ) is where all the dancers go. Heavy L.A presence but plenty of people of all levels to dance with.
Copa is the same  .

Sun - Night Cat is still THE place to be 8) . We are now part of the furniture  !
No salsa on the beach  ....until it warms up again!

Mon & Tue nights there are socials after classes.......run by a couple of Cuban Casino schools. Mainly attended by beginner/intermediate students.

Ok, I'll chime in...

Biggest night of the week is Thursdays at the Century Ballroom. 4000 sq ft dance floor, gets about 500 dancers on a typical Thursday. Class taught by Hally before open dancing. Open until 1:30AM.

Friday. Beso del Sol (Melissa, how about a review?) Rock Salt Only been there once, not many dancers although the music was superb. EMP - Experience Music Project has salsa twice a month. Heard the floor is smallish, but no cover.

Saturday Century Ballroom again.

Sunday Triple Door Same band every week. Really good music, dance floor on the smallish side. No cover. Quite a few good dancers show up. Rock Salt has salsa this night, too.

Monday Salsa Salvaje class and social afterwards Social is free, although they request a $3 donation. Classes are $10.

Tuesday Wilsonian Ballroom Class taught by Michelle Badion before open dancing. $5 cover. Gets lots of UW students, so it's a younger crowd.

Wednesday Dance Underground hosted by Cebrina. (Does she teach beforehand?) Vitto's Haven't tried it yet. I think the Chavez bros. teach there. Danceworks on the East Side (Redmond). More of a ballroom crowd than other clubs.

I'm sure I've missed a lot of other places.

Hmm, I guess when I get the chance I'll post a few of the Vancouver and the one Portland club, too.

Friday. Beso del Sol (Melissa, how about a review?) Rock Salt Only been there once, not many dancers although the music was superb.

Beso: It's a restaurant that masquerades as a club at night. Smoke-free. Smallish dance floor. Pretty much the only place in town to play cumbia - lots of Mexicans go here for this reason. Good place for beginners. So, about 1/3 each salsa/merengue/cumbia, depending on the night.

Rock Salt: I think they have two small dance floors (one upstairs?) on Friday; just one on Sunday. I've been there twice and had lots of fun, actually; great music. Salsa for the most part; some bachata, some reggaeton (woot!) and some merengue. Small, bar/club feel.

The Century is the only place I've heard cha-cha.

Tuesday Wilsonian Ballroom Class taught by Michelle Badion before open dancing. $5 cover. Gets lots of UW students, so it's a younger crowd.

Yes, young crowd. A few really good dancers, quite a few very good dancers, lots of beginners too, so a good mix. Good music -- 100% salsa. Lots of room to dance. Smoke free.

Wednesday Dance Underground hosted by Cebrina. (Does she teach beforehand?)

Not sure if she teaches; she teaches at Experience on Sundays. Not well-attended (yet?) Nice dance studio -- basement level. Smoke free. Room to dance. Good place to practice but not really a club feel at all.

Some Vancouver, BC clubs:

Crush on Monday nights. Nice club. Good DJ, friendly & good dancers.

Polish Hall on Friday nights. Downstairs. A bit crowded. Music wasn't as good as Crush, but overall a good night, too.

Hot Jazz Club Saturday nights. Raised floor. Crowded. Good music & good dancers.

Okay here the scoop from San Antonio!!

On Wed-Sun nights there is Arjon's Latin Club. A nice club with an excellent live band on those aforementioned nights.

On Thur-Sat nights there is Graham Central Station. This club has a dance floor in every room devoted to various types of music that's played there. The salsa/merengue room is my favorite obviously!!!!

There are some smaller clubs-restaurant/dance floor combo like Rosario's on Friday nights and Cafe Azuca as well.

That's the report from the Alamo City. I also here that Austin which only an hour away has a few salsa nightclubs as well.

Actually, this is what happened to me: I used to have a *majorly* sensitive palate, too, but my tastes changed as I got older. First started in college, so that's not too far away for you. I think it was the realization that I could choose what I wanted to eat now that I was on my own in college (and wasn't dependent on Mom's cooking), and suddenly the junk/fast food wasn't nearly as good as an-honest-to-goodness home cooked meal.

Lol! No worries. You're getting a major headstart on all of your peers. By the time you get into college, there will be opportunities for you to take your dancing further. $$ will likely be your limiting factor more than time. I'm sure you'll meet some boys more than eager to want to show you more about dancing - just be aware that they more-than-likely have ulterior motives! Lol!

If you end up needing to buy it, I'd recommend you buy one of the ones that already come precooked in a bag. It's not good, but it'll do.

Oooh, rice cooker! How's that working for you? :D

I inherited a Panasonic a while ago, and never got good rice out of it (which is probably why it was a hand-me-down in the 1st place, lol!) as it would burn on the bottom.

I've since gotten one of those Japanese rice cookers (company name starts with a Z - like Zojurishi or something like that). I'd recommend that you spend the extra couple of $$'s, since it'll be worth it in the long run.

I suppose you can control the stickiness by the amount of water you add, but for the most part, it comes out pretty consistently done properly.

The ratio the rice we use gives 1 part rice to 2 parts water. So normally, I'll use a little less water and a little more rice, or just more rice. :D Turns out great either way! *thinks* I want rice now... Thanks for reminding me!

Does "Rice-A-Roni" fall into that category? *blinks* Mum makes that every so often; I love the cheesy one! Although, that's actually surprising, as for the most part, I hate cheese... (Except that I still eat Cheetos, boxed Macaroni and Cheese... I wonder if those powdered cheese items don't really count for cheese... *thoughtful look*)

I've found that often it depends on what kind of rice you're using. That's the ratio that I use with jasmine rice.

Does "Rice-A-Roni" fall into that category?

Hmm, no, not really, I think. It's somewhat similar, but it's not the same.

I've tried a Mac and Cheese recipe off of the Alton Brown show on the Food Network, but it didn't turn out all that good.

In Philadelphia hit Brasil's on Chestnut Street on Wednesday nights or North By Northwest on Germantown Avenue, and on Friday nights Brasil's has another Latin night, also try a club called Samba on Friday nights. Thursday night's venues are Fiso on South Street and Lyrics at Harbison Avenue. If you want great eats, dancing and performances go to Cuba Libre Restaurant on Second in Olde City on Friday and Saturday nights.

Also, to find Saturday night dance socials check out lalunadancestudio.com and/or atriumdance.com for scheduled dances. Both places are great. La Luna is about a half hour from Center City in Philadelphia and The Atruim is about 15 minutes away across the Ben Franklin Bridge in New Jersey. The Stardust Ballroom in Pennsauken, New Jersey also has great socials a couple of Satudays a month. Check out salsaflava.com for their calendar.

During the summer months only Rock Lobster on the waterfront in the Penn's Landing area has the best salsa/Latin night going on Sundays.

I was indeed at the Philadelphia Congress. I made it to the dance Saturday night, the workshops on Sunday and the competition Monday night.

Okay, let me give a bit of feedback on my experience with the congress, which, by the way, was the first in Philly and held in Center City on Market Street at the lovely and spacious Loews Hotel.

Because the real planning for the congress started less than a year ago, the event suffered its share of labor pains before the birth. Lack of communication seemed to be the biggest issue. I am pretty sure the slow communication was a result of the monumental task it must have been to plan such a large-scale, first-time event. A Web site was set up, but was incomplete until only several days before the congress commenced. I, for one, did not purchase a full pass because I could not plan how much of the congress I wanted to attend because the schedules of workshops and performances were posted so late in the game. Had I been better informed earlier, I probably would have planned to attend more of the event and purchased a full pass as I have for the West Coast Congress this year and New York's congress last year.

As for the party on Saturday night, it was moderately attended but a lot of fun and very festive. I agree the sound system left a bit of room for improvement, but there was a large ballroom provided with lots of seating. At the New York congress last summer, there was very little seating and the dance floor was jammed. Also, at Philly, the workshop space provided was more than ample, which I appreciated. I do think the event was a bit pricey, ala carte-wise, at any rate. If they were going to charge $75 per day for workshops, $30 per day for performances and an additional $30 per day for the dances, they could have provided at least sodas and lite snacks. I know the prices kept a lot of locals from attending, especially when it came to the contest on Monday night, which was an additional $50 over and above the other congress fees.

The contest, however, was OFF THE HOOK! Eleven couples vied for the prize money, which was, I think, $10,000 total. The couple who won was Luis and Marta from Columbia. Judges included Eddie and Maria Torres, and Billy Fajardo and Katie Marlow. Eddie and Maria gave and exhibition performance to a standing ovation as did Billy and Katie. As a side note, if you ever, EVER, get a chance to see Billy and Katie perform their cirque d soliel inspired routine, DO NOT MISS IT FOR ANYTHING! Eddie gave an additonal performance with his daughter. The performances alone were worth going to the contest for, still I think $50 was a little steep. The only major problem I had with the contest was the lack of information given out about the event beforehand. I never saw any rules posted on the Web site.

I thought the event itself was run pretty efficiently. It was the planning beforehand that seemed to need tweaking. I am certain the event can and will improve for next year. As I said before, the first one had its labor pains, but each birth gets easier. I was really impressed that the organizers were able to inspire the Torres folks to come. Maria told me herself that she was impressed with the congress and the city of Philadelphia and that she would love to come again next year. Both she and Eddie were highly energetic, welcoming, personable and a joy to have with us.

I do think it needed to be advertised a bit better. Many non-dancing folks I know told me they heard all about the Salsa On The Parkway event earlier in the week, but didn't hear anything at all about the Congress.

As for the workshops, I enjoyed them, especially the lifts workshop given by Dave Paris. I can now do "the bird" with my dance partner.

I hope to go again next year, and will probably get a full pass, since I saw many talented folks came to teach, perform and play their music and mingle.

Thanks jamaicanspice... it's really *******ing to read so much about Salsa and other peoples experiences. I've only been into salsa for 18 months but I have already converted a few friends, I think continually telling them that it's the best thing on earth! started to grind them down and they gave up and came with me  The feeling when you actually connect with the music doesn't happen all the time for me at the minute but when it does it's such a high it's incredible, can't wait to Miami.

Does anyone know of any sites that I can use to give me an accurate understanding of what the clubs in Miami are really like?????

For those dedicated Salseros y Salseras who need info on the Salsa scene in Boston, you should go to Sophia's in Boston on Wednesday nights, Ryles [in Cambridge] on Thursday nights, and El Bembe in Boston on Friday nights [live band, during the fall & winter]. Decided to make my first post on this thread! Best place to dance in Albuquerque,NM is at the Cooperage on Friday's and Saturday's. Always a live band and DJ in between. In Santa Fe, the Paramount on Saturday's with DJ (by yours truely  ). Albuquerque scene is pretty good and Santa Fe scene is picking up! All dancing in NM seems to be on 1. Rueda is starting to catch on here and I'm sure it's only a matter of time before "on 2" becomes popular. We're usually a step behind everyone else. When you were on 1, we we're just "on"..haha!

Some DC/VA/MD clubs:

Mondays:
Clarendon Grill A bit on the smallish side, and the past month it hasn't been all that great. But plenty of dancers show up, and you can find room if you look hard enough. Music is ok, not great, but at least it's probably 80-90% salsa.

Lucky Bar I hear it has an odd atmosphere and totally doesn't seem like a salsa club, but that really good dancers show up (rather late). Will give a review if/when I go. (Hey Vin, feel free to chime in here!)

Tuesdays:
Not a salsa night for me but both Lulu's and Barking Dog have salsa nights.

Wednesdays:
Zanzibar Probably the largest dance area in the scene. Lots of dancers, decent music. No jeans allowed.

Thursdays:
Havana Village Haven't gone yet, but a friend likes this club a lot. She says it's more laid back then some of the other clubs. I will have to go experience this in person to see what she means.

Cecelia's Been there only once and didn't care for it. The music was really good, at least. Maybe 10-15 dancers stuck around after the class.

Fridays:
Divino's On the smallish side, but lots of good dancers. Music was above average.

H20 Only been here for a concert (La India). The sound system was pretty bad in the main room (ala speaker distortion), but the club is huge! Note: if you show up with friends, make plans on where to meet when it's time to leave!

Saturdays:
Club Yuca Tends to draw in lots of suggles, so be careful while dancing! Plenty of dancers to be found, too. Music is probably 60-75% salsa.

Sundays:
Chevy Chase Ballroom Never been, but two friends of mine just went and said they had fun.

Monthly:
Stuck On Salsa This is the must attend event for anyone wanting to get their salsa fix! Locations and dates vary, but they're really good. If you are in town, you definitely need to go. Heck, even if you're not in town, you should come to these nights!

(YMMV!!!)

There is a new place on Tuesdays, Tequila beach(or lounge I can't remember the name exactly) is having a salsa night on tuesdays. It should be good. I have been wanting to go but I have been so lazy on tuesdays. I might switch from mondays to tuesdays myself.

edit: As for lucky bar the thing I have heard is that it is just way too small. I have not gone myself yet though.

The frustrating thing about this scene is that besides the stuck on salsa events which are always great there is no consistently great night here. I think it is even magnified because of the S.O.S. events, if they weren't so good then you wouldn't even notice the other nights are lacking.

For Gothenburg Sweden I recommend all to go to www.salsagbg.com and se whats happening (a uncommercial website managed by one of our greatest leaders in town). The main salsaclubs are however listed below.

Every Friday & Saturday you have Rio Rio which actually is a boat placed in the moat surrounding the centra of town. On Fridays there are drop-in-classes. On Saturdays it get very crowded. Not to recommend for anyone dancing linestyle. w w w.salsadans.com

Saturdays every second week there i Salsa Caliente club at Trappan Järntorget. This is a real good salsa club with the hottest dancers and nice environment. There is often some kind of show. Drop-in-classes at 21.30. Look for dates at w w w.salsacalienteclub.com

At summertime & Thursday you go to Henriksberg. At summertime you get more info at w w w.henriksberg.se . A great salsaclub with a huge terrace placed upon a mountain. Drop-in-classes for true newbies. The view from the terrace is the best you can get in Gothenburg, the habour and the sunset.... oooo....I long for summertime.....

Lol! It's a fun time in a big scene! You'd enjoy it. (There are lots of jobs here from what I hear, although a lot have to do with the government. Odd, though - even though you need to be a US citizen for those government jobs, I think I have met more foreign citizens working here than in other states in the US.)

So does this mean that if I show you a good time over here, you'd do the same for me in Scandanavia? If so, then I guess it's time to expand "The Plan".

Lisbon salsa scene here I come:

Monday - Bar "O Francês", at Av. 24 de Julho. It's the only place to dance on monday.
Tuesday - Club Hawaii, Docas. It's terribly crowded, but again, the only venue available.
Wednesday - great night at Barrio Latino, the city's best club (at Parque das Nações).
Thursday - Club "Sabor a Brasil", Parque das Nações. Also the only venue, great place, but not many salseros turn up...
Friday and Saturday - Barrio Latino (aforementioned)

I can help you to find nice salsa night clubs even if I'm unable to go oversea. (It may take some time...) Just call me ....I'm sorry... pm me :) .

Its funny with these on-line-maps. I found one for my home county -
http://www.expedia.com/pub/agent.dll?qscr=mrdt&ID=3XNsF.&CenP=57.712619,11.996426&Lang=WLD0409&Alti=500&Size=296,240&Offs=0,333.333333&MapS=0&Pins=|3078|

You see the top of Denmark to the left and Gothenburg where all the clubs are. And Uddevalla where we have had our salsa weekends - a big salsa community considering the size of the town  . There is a small but growing salsa community at Stenungsund as well, 50 km north of Gothenburg. The salsa weekend will move here in March (look at the Annual Salsa Congresses & Events ).

I almost forgot - Krokstrandsfestivalen MAN MUST DANCE. A worldmusic festival is held 28-30 Juli 2005 close to the Norwegian border (the yellow ribbon on the map). The festival is on the beach of the fjord that is the natural border between Sweden and Norway. The landscape almost takes your breath away.
(I must post this festival at the Ads&News  There is usually plenty of salsa and karribean music. Salsa classes as well)

Hello from Winnipeg Manitoba! Our salsa community in Winnipeg is fairly young, but we have a great club called the Empire Cabaret in the downtown area where we have latin nights each Friday and Saturday. It's a wicked club, very elegant, and there's 3 levels each playing different kind of music. Our latin dance addicts are on the second level. Music played is mostly salsa, with some cumbia, merengue, and bachata. If any of you stop by Winnipeg for the weekend come and dance with us! Our style is very similar since we are a small group and we learn from each other. Watching visiting dancers is always so *******ing.

Hi. How is the nightlife there? My brother and his family moved there a few years ago and now my niece moved there with them. I told her there was some Latin NightLife and she heard some utter, but did not get all the info. They live in Cumming.

Monthly:
Stuck On Salsa This is the must attend event for anyone wanting to get their salsa fix! Locations and dates vary, but they're really good. If you are in town, you definitely need to go. Heck, even if you're not in town, you should come to these nights!

Stuck On Salsa event 1/1/2005

From www.djjoserodriguez.com

"Start your year off with a Salsa Bang as StuckOnSalsa, in association with Eileen Torres, presents "The Resolution Jam"...the salsa continues at Zanzibar on the Waterfront Saturday January 1, 2004 on the lower level from 10pm until 4am. Two of the 3 DJs confirmed are Tony Nardolillo and DJ Jose Rodriguez from Philly. There will be no commercial interruptions, no contests, no performances, we are starting the year off with a straight-up 6 hour salsa jam. There will be no events before this one so there will be no waiting or being shifted around until the room is ready, it will be ready at 10pm. We are also taking some chairs and tables out so there will be plenty of room to dance this time around. There will be light fare available for purchase until 3am and drink specials to be announced. "

Hope this helps.

Here's my update on the Melbourne scene, as I've had a couple of international queries I thought I'd post the latest info here  .

Wed - Lotus (R&B/Salsa) still The onlt place to go, eventhough the amount of salsa is getting smaller  . The door opens at 9pm, and they start charging ($5) at 10pm. They play salsa 9-12, and there's a class on 9.30-10.30. Serious salseros turn up early to get their fix (while there's room, and salsa music). afterwards it's a mixture of reggaeton, merengue, latin pop/house, R&B and retro, with a few salsa thrown in. It gets VERY crowded.

Thur - Alumbra (new salsa band playing classica/romantica/timba & DJ) is still going. It's a nice place while the weather is nice & we can dance outside. Though it's getting too crowded with too many non-dancers or traffic hazards :x .
Loft is a new place with a salsa dura band & DJ. It has a decent dance floor. I'm yet to check it out.

Fri - Park Hyatt (not to be confused with Grand Hyatt) is where most of the action is, now that they've got a son band
Gardenias is still good, but quieter.
Viva has also got a band on, but I'm not sure who goes there, as most people who go there Sat would be at Park Hyatt on Fri.
Copa is still ok on a Friday night, I think.

Sat - Viva (level 1 at the old Stage. Salsa dura band/DJ) is usually where all the dancers go. Ther band & floor is great.
Gardenias is becoming a seriously good alternative on Sat, with cheaper cover charge, and more down-to-earth atmosphere.
Copa is the same  .
I believe there is a new place (with a good band) on Lygon st, where the latinoes go. Some old local legends (my salsa mentor/ex included; for those of you who missed out on his prime days, now is the chance to see him in action) have got together for it. I am yet to check it out.

Sun - Night Cat is still THE place to be 8) . What can I say...?
It's the last weeks for Salsa on the beach .... as it's getting cooler  .

Mon & Tue nights there are still only socials (sometimes with a band) after classes.......run by a couple of Cuban Casino schools. Mainly attended by beginner/intermediate students.

Scanning this thread, two things came to mind:

1) If someone is collecting all this info in a list, it would be most useful if it was published somewhere. Salsarhythms, I see your post was in 2003 - are you still compiling a list, or have you published it somewhere already?

2) On p2 of this list there were some posts on smoke-free venues... it would be great to have a "smoke indicator" on such a list - i.e. 0 = no smoking, 2 = smoking but airy venue so it doesn't bother, 10 = splutter, cough, put on foglights, smell like ashtray when you eventually stumble out into fresh air :D , with whatever grades inbetween...

Worst is when people smoke on the dance floor... I guess it's the same as running a marathon next to an overcongested highway!

(OK, while we're grading venues for smoke, we might as well grade them for (over)crowdedness, quality of music, willingness or snobishness of people to dance... hey, this could get out of hand!!)

Of course, I know every well the problem of listing venues - the list already gets outdated as you draw up the first few entries... but nonetheless, if you're traveling to an area you've never been or don't know anyone, it's great to have such a list as a starting point to do your investigation!

Here are some smoke indicators I know of:
Que Pasa, Cape Town (classes Tue, Thu; club Fri, Sat) - 4
Bossa Nova, Cape Town (...) - 8 to 10
Buena Vista, Cape Town (restaurant & salsa Sun) - 6
Ealing Town Hall, London (classes & club Fri) - 0!!
Jongleurs, London (classes & club Wed) - 2
Fiesta Havana, London (...) - 4
Sound, Bar Salsa, My Place, all London (...) - about 5 or 6
Monte Cristo, Paris - 8 (only been once)
La Coupole, Paris - 7 or 8 (only been once)

For me, my favorite place for Salsa dancing in LA are:

1) Steven's Steak House (City of Commerce), Sunday Night-Lots of good dancers but the floor is a little too small ($5), excellent place for followers to find good dancers to practice.

2) Granada (Alhambra), Saturday Night, Large floor but a little $$ ($15 but life music), friendly environment.

Peep, I got to tell you that last night (Thursday) I was visiting Orlando, Fla. and while I was on the road I was switching radio stations until I heard Rumba 100.3 and they were announcing this club called Metropolis so when I arrived at the hotel I set my laptop and do a search for this particular club. Then I took a long rest and get ready for the night and go to Metropolis.

My surprise was that this club was located in the central downtown in a mall (Point*Orlando Mall), it's in the second floor , while I was walking on the hallway I was feeling the vibration of the walls like playing drums and trompets, ok ok , I said, this is it. Wow I said quietly when the sound of the club was all over the place , but not only that, the club has 2 clubs , Metropolis and Matrix which you can jump one to the other. My first thing was to look around for dancers, they were a few, but of course I arrived a little earlier like I always do.

Then after half an hour I saw at the bar about 8 girls seating there and watching, well man I said myself, if your move to ask one of this girls to dance with me since they were not much guys yet, I asked the first lady and make my moves, they were playing this song called " A la hora que me llamen voy " Jose Alberto el Canario , and she was pretty excited, we both felt the same beat and we danced pretty much good like if we knew each other our dance. Right after a while I took a break and then one of the girls came to give me some compliments and I told her that the next dance would be for her.

I spent a good time and both clubs are pretty much well decorated, specially Matrix ( lot of neon frames ). So if you ever come to Orlando visit this place , I recomend you. They play more salsa on Sunday than Thursday thou. I'm looking forward to come on Memorial Day Weekend to enjoy the Sunday night.

Here is the Link for the Club.

but yeah seriously SF has so many salsa clubs it bugs sometimes, because you never know where or when the best dancers are gonna show up. for example, it's thursday night, but i'm not going out because there's at least 6 salsa clubs open tonight, with live bands playing in at least 3 clubs. I live 30-40 mins outside SF so I do get burned out and tired of driving in without assurance that good dancers will be present

The only night with little competition among clubs is tuesday night - the Glas Kat, and monday night - Cafe cocomo.
Other than that there's always a handful of choices. For a fairly comprehensive list of clubs & events check out: http://salsacrazy.com/

there's also periodic socials like Hot salsa fridays that sometimes draw more folks for special events. Frisco also has a cuban salsa scene, if you're more comfortable with the casino style

right now I have cut down on going out (decreasing my burnout for LA congress ;) ) But I'll probably go to the Allegro social on sunday, it's the most populated and diverse dance gathering in the bay. PM me if you want more info on that, and maybe we'd get a chance to meet :D
