I just had a lesson with Alain and Anik. They changed my method for connecting the hands. Now they have me placing my thumb on the lady's wrist bone and the middle finger on the underside of the wrist. Previously, I would lead more with 2 fingers (index and middle), and the fingers would would push against her palm ar pull against her fingers.

I have to say I really like this new method. There is a lot less "play", so it is easier to communicate and the lady is able to respond much faster.

Never consciously had a particular hand position when doing latin. I ususally do the hand connection that works best for a particular move.
For instance, for leading the follow into swivels (Suzie Q) for salsa I have a palm open position with thumb and four fingers forming a V.

I know that I have at times done the hand position that you used to do Dancementor. Must consciously try out the two variations tonight.

I've used variations of what your describing DM, but never for purely social dancing. I take it to be a competitive adaptation designed for greater force, precision, and speed – all useful elements for competing.
