Okay, all you nightclub dancers, here's an etiquette question for you. What do you do when listening to a live band or a DJ disco mix that goes on and on and on? 10, 20 or even thirty minutes of continuous music with no break? Is there a poilte way to end the dance and change partners? Or do you just tough it out?

I don't know how anyone could stand that!! I've been fortunate enough not to experience that! I have wanted to stop dancing with people during a 4/5 minute dance. (My feet just cannot take it anymore as I am breaking in a pair of new shoes and have been dancing almost non-stop for a long time and I reach breaking point...lots of reasons.) What I do is guide the person to the edge of the dance floor, so that once we stop she can just step off the floor, rather then feeling abandoned in the middle and walking though all the dancers. Then since I'm leading it is fairly easy to stop, asking the follow if she minds, she says no, we stop, I thank her, and escort her back to her seat and chat a little while. This way the follow does not feel as bad that we stopped dancing.

Shoot the DJ. That was easy.
I haven't run into this too much except at Latin clubs. It seems like some DJs like to play the "neverending merengue". If there's a discernable "break" in the song like when they mix 2 or more songs together, we sorta go when the break happens. Although I've been "stuck" with the same guy for 20 minutes before.... And wouldn't you know it would be a "Hot-hands Jose"? Thank God I'm married with kids and don't have to wrry about that anymore!

Hmm. This happens to me all the time while doing club freestyle dancing -- several songs in a row, all mixed together. And I just keep dancing. I've had a few leads ask me mid-dance if I'm ready to quit. And that point, I'll generally take the hint and leave the floor. But I'm very fortunate -- and physically fit enough to dance quite a while, as long as I'm well hydrated. :)

Since I don't speak Spanish very well (and understand the lyrics), it is easy for DJ's to blend 2 songs together. I'll be 30 seconds into the second song before I say, "Hey! Wait a second...doh!"
What is really cruel is to play the long version of "In the Mood" (swing).

Or what's the name of that quickstep? Sing, Sing, Sing? The long version is eight-plus minutes. Of quickstep? You'll need resuscitation before it's over. Disco mixes aren't the only culprits.

Here in NY City the salsa culture has an understanding that there is to be no mixing of songs by the DJ. If he dares to do it, the better not be long, plus the DJ will get a share of boos and looks and lots of complaints.
That said the other night I went out, I hate dancing to speed music, but this lady caught me off guard so I accepted. I usually disappear when the fast stuff starts.
The DJ must have played an over 10 minute speed monster, live version song. HELP Usually you can tell when a dancer has had enough, but this girl, MAN, she wanted to keep going. I had been dancing for over 3 hours... God, I wanted to shoot the DJ, I wanted to fall down and die. I absolutely can't stand it when a song goes on for too long.
That said, you can usually tell when a dancer wants off the floor, I normally point with my head when I see the dancer feeling like she has had enough. At times I even do the old, Girl I'm running out of gas. Thus far, people seem to take it well.

I really don't understand why salsa DJ's ever thing this is a good idea. I think I've met *one* salsa dancer who actually likes mixing. And beleive me, that's one out of a whole mob!
Boriken . . . I'm feeling you regarding those turbo salsas! Unfortunately my proximity to Los Angeles means that I get more of them then I'd like from most of the DJs around here. :x :(
