View Full Version : Salsa fix?

When you talk to salsa dancers, it's really amazing how animated they get. For them, salsa is like breathing. They've just gotta do it to live -- it's an addiction for many, and they have to have a "fix." Question: How do you know when you need a fix? Symptoms? And how long can you go between salsa dancing "hits" before you've just gotta have another?

I need to dance salsa at least once a week. I have adjusted to usually dancing salsa once a week because I love quite a few other dances and there are only so many hours every week. Also it being a small town there aren't always salsa events on a daily basis. :(

If I have a so-so time at another dance (even if it is non-salsa) I need an emergency latin fix. So, yes it is like breathing, rejuvenating...Yesterday night because of the frustrating waltzes, only one cha-cha...I must go out tonight. So I danced salsa Tuesday, Wednesday, and now am going to go out latin dancing Saturday, today night. :)

I ALWAYS need a fix! My fixes only last for the evening. Once the next day comes it starts all over again. Almost vampirish! symptoms include: loss of sleep, uncontrollable clapping/tapping/beating of la clave, salsa dancing to any genre of music in earshot...just to name a few.

Salsa IS life!

If I can't go out and dance, i'm in my room with my headphones and full-length mirror....or I'll venture out into the living room and dance with my brother.

I need my fix EVERY day!

I love ballroom, but salsa fix is what keeps me going. 2 times a week is a necessity, but salsa is an antidepressant, so if not everything goes great in my life, you'll see me dancing more often...
I was travelling recently and couldn't salsa for 2 weeks. Anxiety, loss of sleep, cravings for chocolate (yet another happiness drug? ), dance moves whenever no one is around...
Is it treatable? R U addicted?

Hmmmm, let me see. Pulse... check. Not snoring... check. OK, I need a "fix" :D

Ha, ha, David...pulse check, indeed! :) Like Redhead, I love ballroom, but there's something indescribably fabulous and fluid aobut salsa. I try to dance it twice a week, but that's only limited by silly things like work and sleep...if I didn't have to do either, it would be every night...acutally every other night that I wasn't doing ballroom! :)

It's not rare for me to go out every day of the week and
go straight from the club to work on many occasions...

In fact, here I am at work this morning and I was just out
last night till very late.

After that, we went back to my house (hard wood floors)
and kept dancing until about 7:00am...

Slept for about 20 minutes and here I am... :D

hey.. its a nationality all on its own .. we say salser@ first before saying where we're from 8) .. its not just a dance u know.. its a way of life for those who truelly express it.. granted there are good apples and those who could do better.. nonetheless.. in time they find the way..

ahh what can i say.. can't put it into words much .. but errr.. its just soo cool to feel .. cool :peace:

Symptoms? Hmmm... restlessness, absent-mindedness at work, doing salsa moves discretely at work and in public places, impending fear of missing a salsa class for professional commitment reasons, and more important, to look at the clock constantly to gaguge how much time is left until I go dancing.
Once a week has worked fine for me so far, although I think two would be ideal. Nevertheless, there are not so many salsa venues here, so the choice if limited even when I 'm available.

I started out as a once-a-fortnight girl... then the habit became once a week... twice a week... Now I get panic attacks whenever I think I *may* not be able to get my three nights of salsa.

MM, maybe you should look at it in another perspective. Have you ever thought, incredible as it may seem, that we may be the "normal" ones.

I haven't had a salsa fix since Thansgiving!
before that I was going out once or twice a week... but I've been on "baby watch" with my cousin who has been in labor for over a week! I'm fighting and scratching trying to find some time to maybe go this weekend. I do have time Friday, but I'm not a big fan of our Friday night club.... Thursday is my fave and Saturday is good too, but of course I have multiple things to do on those days.

 I have my cell phone on me all the time... but with active labor, I've been staying there helping take care of her and her daughter, driving her to the hospital, etc.

LOL. I guess that's why I am on salsa forums so much this weekend...salsa withdrawal getting to me. It 's Christmas and our salsa club is closed for the weekend, and classes are cancelled. I can't wait until next week to dance again. Salsa is definitely an addiction. If I am away from it for more than a week I start getting restless. Practicing my steps when I think no one is looking, thinking ahead of the next time I go dancing, and of course, talking to other salsa friends to get me through the day. Is there a salsaholic foundation? I think I might need one :?

Hi...
I was told that life was the disease and (salsa/swing/ballroom/tango/CW) dancing was the cure...

I can a slight fix on Thursday... a couple of friends hosted a wine tasting and afterwards we showed the other guests how to dance....
I'm definitely looking forward to Wednesday (the salsa weekend begins in Indy)

and btw.... my cousin who I was taking care of while she was in labor starting the weekend after Thanksgiving.... is STILL in labor! She's miserable.... I've had holiday reposnibilities, so I haven't been staying there, but I've been checking in daily.

Anyone (definitely includes me) who posts on DF salsa is an addict, or in denial....

Anyone who posts here (defintely includes me) to relive a recent memory of salsa dancing, or has that "coming home" feeling when browsing this forum....YOU COULD be a Salsa addict...Gee, sounds like Jeff Foxworthyesque....

Anyone who cannot go out Salsa dancing but comes here to feel part of a salsa scene, you could be a redneck..oh, wait...a salsa addict....

Anyone who after dancing salsa all night, comes home and can't sleep because you are constantly reliving the night's dances in your mind...you might be salsa addict.....

Anyone who thinks about what they need to learn how to do in salsa dancing, or do better, while doing other activities....you just might be a salsa addict.....

Anyone who has seen the original "shall we dance" (havent seen the remake so I cant say its as good) and laugh at the small dance humor parts, you might be a dance addict (salsa included)....

Anyone who gets annoyed by ANYTHING that changes your dance plans...good or bad....sick or holidays....you might be a dance/salsa addict.....

ok, enough for now...

P.S. In labor since Turkey weekend??? Holy cow batman! Can't they induce the labor or have a C section????

Are you kidding?!? I am exhausted after a night of dancing (and my drive)... I fall asleep with a smile

And the hospital can't legally induce until she's 38 weeks (Jan. 5th) or there are other circumstances necessitating such action. She's progressing slowly and still between 3 and 4 cm.

You can interchange the word "salsa" for any type of dance..... :)

I was like that, but then I started to demand more . .

First of all, I wanted better music. The "salsa" music that they play at the clubs that I've gone to have been bad. Give me some great Fania-era or earlier music.

Next, I wanted more dancers. I love dancin' with all, but its not worth it to go out thursday and dance with the same people that I can dance w/ on sunday. Give me variety.

Finally, its the floor. Some places dont have a good dance floors. Others have tiny floors. Give me space.

Thats why I only go out once a week.

However, I am a hardcore salsero. I do travel to all these congresses and whenever Im in a new town, I plan ahead and find the salsa club via the web.
