I should preface this by saying that I really and truly am not good at Smooth/Standard, thus the reason for asking this question before I even consider the option...

For those that listen to country...

I will more than likely be doing a showcase towards the end of the year, and I'm already starting to get ideas for it LOL...I absolutely LOVE the new-ish song "On Again Tonight" by Trent Willmon. The beat pattern for the song is quite obviously a Viennese Waltz--but the mood and lyrics are decidedly NOT a typical VW. To me, the song lends itself to a very emotive/Latin-y interpretation, and I already have ideas in my head for the costuming and all. I'd do a simple black velvet dress (probably tea length, not full-length) with dramatic-but-understated smoky makeup and leave my hair long and loose.

I guess my main question is, would this actually work--especially for somebody who's not all that great at Smooth/Standard?

Oh, and BTW, if you're interested, you can listen to the song at http://www.myspace.com/trentwillmon.

Thanks!:D

I haven't tried to actually dance to it, but it sounds like if you slow down the speed a little bit (there is a lot of software that can do that), you could do more Smooth Waltz figures to it. Throw some Bolero in there too. Seriously. Use the:
123 123 123 123
as:
slow QQ slow QQ
OK, it's not 4 beats, but it's easy enough to split it up, and some of those lyrics are screaming BOLERO to me (or at least some very erotic Smooth work) ;)

LOL that's exactly why I said it leaves a lot of room for Latin-y interpretation! ;) Actually I saw something sort of similar back in January at the Dancer's Cup...David Hamilton and Olga Foraponova did a showcase as part of the pro show to Josh Groban's "Si Volvieras A Mi"--definitely a VW, but with a lot of Spanish flavor. It was stunning. Which makes me think this can be done...

BUMP- I'm on dialup, else I'd listen to the song and pitch my two cents in. I'm having the partner download it though, so I'll get back to you on it!

Tempo is between Slow Waltz and Viennese Waltz. Probably just right for Country Waltz? That doesn't help you much. But it sounds a little bit too "country" for ballroom.
