That is beautiful! I just love the colors!!!
How do you know what's a current style or not???
Well, this one has loads of feathers on the hem, which haven't been in style in several years.

How do you know what's current style for your day to day clothing?
I'm not trying to be sarcastic by the way, just pointing out that it is essentially the same thing. Those who spend a lot of time around ballroom comps, or those who make a point of keeping track of them, can see what is current and what is not. Simple as that.

unless of course you ar talking about a few feathers now laced vertically throughout the dress..which is stil a bad investment IMO

I agree. Not to mention, I dislike feathers and am so happy they're (mostly) out of style now. It's just soo over the top...

I am happy some feathers are back, they allow the slirt to move so much nicer...
oh, i love some feathers. i'm surprised that the new feather styles hasn't caught on as big. didn't several people wore some version of it in last two blackpool finals?
sounds like kat has got one. when can we expect the picture? :) did you get it from europe?

others would be able to tell you better but i imagine it you go to the photo gallery and look at jonathan's site you would see some...or to the Dore or Chrisanne sites..in fact i know their is one w/red feathers on Chrisanne right now...I haven't seen deirdre do any...and I don't recall seeing it elsewhere...but someone else will probably be able to be more specific...its kind of a cool look
Saw a white one that I'm guessing is what y'all were talking about. Pretty but not my first choice. Of course, considering my first choice is jeans and a t-shirt, I probably won't be the one setting the style for ballroom dance in the near future.

I think feathers tend to make the dress look too busy...I'm looking forward to seeing Katarzyna's though (your dress this weekend was really cool, by the way)
The last one Anna posted I liked best, seemed the least busy. I think that's what gets me about feathers, the business factor. I want to see a picture of Katarzyna's dress though, the pics I've seen of her dresses are always gorgeous, so if she liked it, I think I'd have to like it.

I didn't realize how small the picture was going to show up, but in the full-sized one you can see feathers strewn all over the skirt and it looks completely...furry.
I guess this means it'd look cool from a distance though.
BTW, when I said "business" I meant busy-ness. That still looks funny. Oh well...

Well, I've defeathered at least one row of the darn things. That dress has spent the last 3 years in a storage bin *non climate controlled* and so the feathers have ummmmm deteriorated a bit..... My office floor looked like I'd murdered about a dozen muppets or at least shaved a few maltese....
I'm also de-wiring the hem so it isn't so *bouncy*. ONce all that's done I'll de-feather some more so it's a little less Over The Top. I don't look good in too many feathers. Besides which, I'd be strewing feathers every where I go anyways since they are so ummm.... fragile....

Oh, that visual is priceless :)
The other funny thing that tends to happen with feathered gowns is invariably some of it will "molt" from all of the dance movement and stick to your partner's pants (and sometimes in a not-so-flattering location - "dude, you have feathers on your a ss....")

How do you defeather a dress, and are you removing any of skirt layers too? Just curious since our club owns a dress from who-knows-when that everyone refuses to wear since it's so floofy, and it's said to see it sitting around in a closet (and filling up the whole darn thing!).

I have several garbage bags' worth of poofy "underskirts" (thinking maybe I'll do *something* with them someday). The gowns looked like friggin square dance dresses before I removed them. It isn't hard to de-feather a gown - it just takes a while to go through alllll of the skirtage. Usually the boa isn't sewn on that tightly. Sometimes chiffon suffers a little damage/holes from having boas sewn onto it, but generally it isn't too noticeable. Removing wiring depends on how it's attached. If it's boning sewn on, it's much easier to cut it off. If it's fishing line, just sneak into the casing, make a cut in the filament, and pull it out.

I wanted to make sure my neck was covered whenever she walked by. Good thing I had that plastic collar. ;)

Thanks! Sounds simple enough, I'll definitely try to salvage the dress then.

Go underneatht eh layer where the feathers are sewn on and VERY CAREFULLY take out the stitchng with nail scissors. This will take about 4-5 days depending on how long you stick with it.... Sounds like a good hazing activity...

Personally I prefer seam rippers/unpickers they are finer than scissors and far quicker to use but you still need to be careful

If you can't get it off without damaging the skirt, go ahead and cut it off. Shorten the skirt about 2-3 inches, then add more skirt underneath in a contrasting/complimentary color.
The last standard dress I made had two skirts - top red, bottom white, with the top one a few inches shorter than the bottom one. I had some white accenting along the neckline, and wore it with white jewelry - lots of compliments on movement. Here's a pic (hopefully the link will work): http://www.photoreflect.com/scripts/prsm.dll?EventOrder?photo=07DW00F7020141&album=216305&adjust=1
See look everybody - I do dance standard! :)
I did that too with a ballgown I made my partner at the time. Bottom skirt was light purple, top skirt was dark purple, plus the panels weren't seamed between the hem and bodice so the light purple could flash through.
