I enjoyed this movie.
It had kind of a modern approach to it's look, as opposed to the costuming used in the 80s. It's plot line wasn't top notch, but it had some decent twists. Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell did well, and Gong Li was good to watch. :raisebro:
It even had some salsa in it.
(DP, the scenes of Farrell dancing with Li were kind of like those of Pacino in Scent of a Woman.)
Good point, but it was still nice to see the dancing included, just like with Scent of a Woman. :bouncy:

we were cringing and nudging each other during the 'salsa' scenes.

actually the dancing wasn't bad - could've been way worse. but the character Colin played just seemed like he wouldn't be a dancer.

I was pleasantly surprised to see the salsa included! The plot of ridiculous, but who goes in to watch these movies with their thinking cap on? I had fun :)

i remember watching miami vice in the 80s even though it was COMPLETELY at odds with my personal aesthetics at the time, and being entranced by it. so even though the movie fell outside my normal range of "must-see's," i went.

i went to the movie by myself, and had a ball. the last time i went to a movie by myself, i felt lonely and unhappy. this time around, i had fun and was pleased that noone was there to bother my quality time with myself ;)
I loved the show but hated the movie.
Also, IMO, the whole digital "filming" used made it look very "C.O.P.S." to me.

I went to see it with my SO (it was his idea).
He loved it. I didn't. Maybe it works better for men (esp if Gong Li is your type)? Colin Farrell's not my type, and Jamie Foxx was wasted in the sidekick role.
I found it *very* hard to follow the dialogue, which didn't help. And the salsa scene -- well the music was salsa. Not too sure about the dancing.

Hmm, I don't know if I'll go see this. I loved the TV show back in the day (partly because I was living there and I recognized a lot of the locations), but it was very much a creature of its time. I'm not sure that trying to revive it was such a good idea.

there's nothing nostalgic about the production in the movie - it's thoroughly contemporary.

My eyes were so focused on the two main characters that were dancing, I didn't check to see if the extras knew what they were doing.

It probably is at least good enough to see a matinee.

Miami Vice plots on the T.V. show weren't the best in the world either so it was ok with me.

I enjoyed Gong Li, but I'll take you over her any day Mac. :raisebro:

Exactly. And I wonder if a movie based in the 1980's could have been a success?

Well, probably not, but for me the fact that it isn't based around the vibe of the TV show is the reason I wouldn't be interested. Without that, it's just some random movie with a well-known title. (Although I have to say I've been impressed by nearly everything else Michael Mann has done, so I might go see it anyway.) Let me give you an example: Mission Impossible 1. I went to see it and I was incredibly disappointed. All of the things that made the MI television show interesting to me were gone: the taut plots, the body lanugage, the gadgets, the lack of dialogue that made you really pay attention to what the characters were up to. (When watching the TV show, you have to make sure you get back from the kitchen before the commercials are over. If you miss 30 seconds of the show, you're lost.) It was reduced to just an average action movie with the same title. I didn't bother going to see MI 2 or 3.
Incidentally, if you want to see what an '80s Miami Vice movie would look like, go seek out a copy of Mann's "Band of the Hand".

I liked MI 1 the best of the three, and MI 3 seemed better then MI 2.
If I can find the film you suggest, I might give it a view.
By the way, like your new avatar. Who's the babe? ;)
