View Full Version : Dressing for Social Dances/Parties

The key thing for me is to dress simply with two factors in mind:

a) Freedom of movement

b) Ventilation

For me, I usually wear a nice pair of neat pressed slacks and a nice dark colored t-shirt (always carry a spare or two, a towel and anti-perspirant) and good shoes of course that are comfy and allow me to feel the floor. The ventilation aspect is so vital to me since I do EC Swing, Latin and Hustle, all of which are strenuous (but so darned much fun). It doesn't do much good to be all decked out and yet roasting, dying and drowning in sweat .

Like I said, neat good-looking simplicity and comfort is my preferred method.

Thankfully, most venues I go to are air conditioned, which makes a HUGE difference!

I find that a pair of black pants and a loose fitting shirt works good for me. I prefer material that breathes pretty well. I have a black Chrisanne men's shirt that I love. It's made of stretchy material and breathes well. I like my pants to hang as low as possible without touching the floor. One thing I hate is sitting down and my pants crawling up to my knees. :(

Honestly, over time my entire day-to-day wardrobe has transmutated into an extended variety of salsa club attire! Seriously, I wear black slacks, a nice, fairly loose, button down, black (albeit with different patterns/textures) short sleeve shirt, and jazz sneakers just about always – I teach in it (& not dance, my students at UCSD), I practice in it, I go to clubs in it! It’s the SDsalsaguy uniform!

That's because you are GUYS!!! Dressing for women is a bit more complicated. For me, breathable fabric is important, but I also want to look good. For me, that usually means a dress (any color will do) that moves when I dance, so it creates nice lines. It also has to be secure enough that I don't have to worry about underwear or about any body parts getting excessively exposed. (Newbies: See thread on pantyhose!)

Black IS a nice color for clothes, but, as a woman, if you want to be seen on the floor (especially social dance) wear some other color. Everybody else will be wearing black. So wear pink, or emerald, or royal blue, or fuchsia. Anything but black. And make sure your outfit is comfy, right down to the hose and shoes.

What do you other ladies out there wear for a night (or day) of social dancing?

Hmm, depends on where I'm going but I prefer pants. I like to wear either jeans (country) or dark slacks (salsa etc) with a pretty fancy shirt. I love those gauzy peasant type shirts that are sheer (you wear a tank under) and boots to dance in. I only wear heels (strappy sandal heels) while at work, I like to go casual when I go out for fun. I'm all about COMFORT! Style comes in second...(sorry, I broke the women's code to dressing..)

I'm starting to worry about you. First, only two pairs of dance shoes, and now THIS. Comfort comes first. What is this about? You've now broken TWO women's dance codes.

I'm with SD on this one, my day-to-day wardrobe has sort of mutated into my club gear. Slacks (primarily black, but some other colors too), shirts that breathe, and of course comfortable dance shoes. I do get really dressed up once a month at our Pinnacle Club party. There I usually wear a comfortable suit.

So ladies tell me about your clothes testing in the store dressing rooms :D My salsera friends tell me funny stories about dancing in the dressing room mirrors when trying out a new outfit!

Well of course there is dancing in dressing rooms. How else am I to see if a skirt moves just so while turning or if some other article of clothing stays where it should?

Hmmm, stores need to put personal music systems in every dressing room to facilitate this important testing  Whatcha think?

I'm with MissAlyssa when it comes to dress for clubbing as well. I find pants to be much more comfortable as well, especially when guys dip me and I never need to worry about flashing anyone :P

Sad, sad, sad. The dressing rooms I go to usually have MUSAK. Blech! No good dancing stuff there.

But you know who does play good dancing music pretty often? Starbucks. Some good fifties-era foxtrot-type stuff. Also, Barnes and Noble. Yesterday I was at B&N, and they played a good half hour worth of excellent WCS. I was jammin' in the aisles.

And since when is flashing someone a bad thing? Just kidding. That's why I wear dance trunks. :D

Anything but skin-tight leopard print mini-dresses please!!!!!

I like clothes that are modest and comfortable. I don't like straps hanging out where they shoudn't, etc. Lately, though, I 've found that keeping the "belly bump" under wraps is hard to do. It seems that maternity wear wasn't designed for dancing and dancewear certainly isn't designed for us preggies.

I mean maternity shirts are supposed to cover your belly, but when you go into closed position, they end up "riding up" and exposing the belly bump. I know it works for some hollywood celebs, but I don't like seeing the big belly in the mirror, so I'm pretty sure no one *else* wants to see it either. :o

On a side note, does nayone have any info on maternity dance/comp wear or am I going to have to deisgn/market my own????? Dancers Must Dance (as I've heard it put) and that includes those of us who are breeding, too. Just because I've got a baby on the way doesn't mean my feet suddenly fell off even though I can't really see them, lol.

My wife orders her dance slacks from a place in San Franscisco . . . the pants are dance pants . . . and you order the waist the cut, the length, etc. . . . but they do come unhemmed with enough to make cuffs or cut them off. You have to hav ethem finished at the bottom if you want.

She says they are the most comfortable dance pants she has ever worn, and since she is just shy of 5'8'' - the length thing is great! The also wears them to work. Oh, the cost? $29.95 for custom made slacks. They have men's as well. If anyone wnats their e-address, let me know. I'll get it from her and forward it along . . .

For that price, you could get some for thew time you are pregnant, and then have them tailored later or simply order a few more pairs.

I wouldn't be totally certain about that - I had one friend who was still dancing literally hours before giving birth - she would wear low riders and crop tops and just let the belly stick out in between - and she looked fabulous!
But if you're not comfortable with that - would dresses work better than blouses as far as keeping your bump covered?

Cheers

I find that jeans and either a very nice fitting t-shirt, or a tank top work for the shows i go to. Being a teen, and one that attends punk, ska, metal, rock, and various other types of music it's important for me to be able to wear clothing that's not going to be wrecked by sweat (gross i know, but it's a part of the experience) or someone pulling it. Skirts and dresses are a no for hardcore dancing and such.

Hey Vince - I'd love the URL for the place your wife gets her pants. I always have trouble with length. I really like nice fitting black slacks with a little boot-leg and slit up about 5" of the side. Hard to find. I got a nice pair from Cache that are slit up the front of one knee and the back of the other, but unfortunately my heel kept getting stuck in the hem. Very expensive non-dance pants!

Whatever I wear is almost always black.

What I wear depends on the venue. When I go to monthlies and socials where you don't get bothered by non-dancing drinking crowds, I wear a strappy dress or a skirt with a feminine top in black, gold and/or red -- pale colours don't work for me. At clubs where non-dancers mix with dancers, I don't feel comfortable dressing up so I wear black trousers or jeans and a close fitting top.

I always wear black pants or jeans and a fitted top. Its winter time here so a skirt is out of the question for a few months

I never wear loose fitting tops for the simple reason that partners have a clear view of my waist line and know where to appropriately place their hand!

You'll have to explain this in slightly more detail. Being able to see a waistline tells me nothing about where it is appropriate to place my hand. I'm going to go for the followers right hand with my left hand, and her left shoulder blade with my right hand, except for a couple of swing moves where I go for the hip. Seeing a wasitline doesn't help me, so I don't understand what you meant here.

More details, please.

It depends on what I'm doing--if I'm waltzing or doing a quick cha cha or a pretty rumba, then, yes, my hands are gonna be where my frame puts them. But if I'm just screwing around with a merengue or something at a club or whatever, then absolutely my fingers are going to go for the skin! And what is appropriate touch, I think, depends on your relationship with your partner. (Oh, and BTW, even doing strict ballroom, if my partner is wearing a top that's open at the middle--I'm far more likely to do steps in which my hand goes around her waist)

Plus--love those bare middles with the bling bling in the belly button. Too sexy!

ShyDancer
06-11-2004, 06:31 PM
Ok to clarify.....

I mean that its very easy for someone (especially beginners, who have no frame yet  ) to misjudge where they catch me in a spin, lead a fan, or any of the hundred figures that I dont know the name of yet..Wearing a fitted top simply gives them a clear view of where its better to place their hands, on my waist or hip rather than my ribcage where a quick shove will hurt.. it has nothing to do with excecuting the move. Id rather be led into a fan with a strong hand in the lower back than a hand that has to slide around for a second to find the middle therefore taking up that precious second that can take the sharpness out of a move.

Plus--love those bare middles with the bling bling in the belly button. Too sexy!

If you are female, and you have really bad BO, there's nothing worse for a guy than your wearing sleeveless tops (at least for Standard). Not only does he have to deal with your BO during the dance, it's stuck to his wrist for the rest of the night.

I find that I end up perspriring a lot, so I never wear a sleeveless shirt - out of respect for the man. Lately, I find that my shopping trips revolve around something I can wear on the dance floor - as it's usually nice enough to wear to work as well. I find a lot of knee-length skirts that are still full enough to do smooth in.
Slacks just don't cut it for me anymore. They somehow seem un-feminine on the dance floor (especially with all those lovely swirly skirts everyone else is wearing). Plus, they can get a little warm after a while.

Sometimes we just have to accept that people are biological creatures. But whatever you do - don't wear antiperspirant and a sleevleess top.

I wear jeans, shirts or blouses that enable movement, and trainers, because I have no dancing shoes yet.
*ducks the flying objects*
Hey! Those things are so expensive, and besides I'm too much of a beginner to start on Latin heels yet! :P
The sweat... it really is a problem, isn't it? Our ballroom is always a burning furnace! I just put on antiperspirant and NEVER wear sleeveless tops. I never did like them anyway.
On another note, we're all a bit sweaty in there. No exceptions. I could een say it adds to the feeling! :D
Thoughts on that?

Dance clothes. For me, the search for dance clothes starts with the fabric. I have a real "textile fetish" (blush, blush), and silk is my hands down favorite. It's light, it's cool, it breathes, it drapes beautifully against the curves of my body, and it feels good in my partner's hands.

I have a figure more like Marilyn Monroe or Elizabeth Taylor than Gweneth Paltrow, so I have to have a waist. I cannot wear chemise style dresses. My favorite combo is a little silk camisole, a pair of tap pants, and a fringed shawl pinned around my waist to form a skirt. The triangular cut of the shawl looks pretty neat, and the fringe swings out nicely when I dance. I ususally bring a sweater or woolen shawl to wear when I'm sitting, as I get too cold when I'm not moving. I like a skirt that swings and flows when I dance, and it has to be pretty roomy. I've nearly ripped several of my dresses because they were too narrow and when I'd do a high carisia or a low corte I could feel the seams being pulled.

My favorite dress I found on the sale rack at Penney's. The color literally leapt into my hand, a soft cream and pink print. As soon as I touched it, I knew I had to have it and hang the price. It was 100% silk crepe, with a 100% silk charmeuse lining. It had a layered, fluttery skirt, and was cut completely on the bias so it draped and skimmed over every curve.

The first time I wore it, my best friend exclaimed, "You look SO 'Blanche DuBois!'" and christened me, "La Mariposa," the butterfly. Coincidently, there is also a really famous, standard tango number called La Mariposa. I got SO MANY compliments when I first wore that dress. My teacher, my friends, my partners, even the chefs at my favorite sushi bar couldn't stop complimenting me. HEAVEN for a girl who grew up thinking she wasn't pretty or sexy.

The best thing, is that in this dress I FEEL so soft and pretty and feminine. I think it helps me express those qualities when I dance.

Renee

PS Dancing Mommy -- as I said, most of my life I never thought of myself as sexy or beautiful. But when I was pregnant, I felt SO SEXY! I mean, there it was, right out there for the whole world to see, I'd "done it," I'd had sex, and the living proof was wriggling around in my belly. After birth, I went back to feeling fat and ugly and tired again, but every time I was pregnant I had this incredible feeling of being ripe, fruitful, sexy, sexual, beautiful. It was great. In the immortal words of Mel Brooks (The Producers), if you've got it, FLAUNT IT, BABY, FLAUNT IT!! Dress to accentuate your baby. Let the world know that your creative and sexual energy is running so strong, it can LITERALLY come to life in your womb.

PPS I'm a little overweight still, so I, too, like most of the guys, have a problem "Glowing" too much, which is why I probably favor such skimpy clothing. My teacher is exasperating enough to brag that he never sweats (he wears suits and ties for dancing), and tells me that the reason I sweat so much is because I think too much when I'm dancing. If I'd get out of my head and stop thinking, I wouldn't perspire. AAUUGHH! The maddening thing is, for the last two and a half years, he's been right about EVERYTHING he's ever told me, so he's probably right about this, too, even though it makes no sense. AAUUUGHH!

The issue with jeans is not just the informaility, but that they change how you move, unless the fabric has a lot of stretch to it.

Well I don't sweat so much when dancing salsa, usually, compared to when I was starting out. When one is learning one must expend a great deal of effort. So I did sweat a lot, and it could have been the result of thinking too. Now I don't do as much of that and so I sweat less. :)

My jeans are all so worn out that they totally stretch. It must be all that wearing them 24/7. :P
Informality? Well, I only go to the practice parties, so it's not as formal. My teacher comes with t-shirts and gym trousers. Naughty thing, she is. Reminds me of Peter Pan. :D

renee, i'm with you all the way on the silk thing...the best: silk jersey! hard to find, though. :( but feels like a buttery second skin!

stretchy jeans and a top for wcs, definitely something skirt-ey for ballroom. if i'm wearing 3" heels, i am not covering up my legs, weather be damned!

oh, and i do not own any non-danceable skirts. haven't for the past five years or so. didn't even plan it that way, it just...happened....

dancing in fitting rooms is a must. it got much better since i started bringing my mp3 player with me :)

I prefer pants, and a stretchy/dressy short-sleeved or 3/4 length sleeved shirt. My very favorite pants are black with a full leg. The fabric has some lycra in them, a very nice drape, and they are very feminine. I bought them on clearance at Target, of all places, and I thought I'd hate them! LOL I had them tailored when I lost weight, and I'm thinking I'll have to have them tailored again before too long. I wonder how far she can cut them down before they just look terrible? I have an assortment of blouses, none are my favorites, tho. I have a hard time finding clothes here. I'm too tall, too curvy, too long thru my body, I'm just too much "woman". I'm pretty average for an American, but the local ladies are very petite. So when we go back to the States for a visit, I'll be shopping for some dance clothes!

As of yet, I've never worn a dress. (I know the clothing police at the ballroom last week who told me I could no longer wear my green cords would just love it if I bought at least one article of clothing that had a sequin on it. ) Aside from not being able to find *any* dresses (suitable for dance or otherwise), I'm afraid I'd feel a little bit too sexy in them. *adjusts wedding ring*

Have I replied to this thread yet? Bugger it I'm too lazy to go back and check. It's Friday afternoon and I'm tired and cranky.

For class I wear pants and a comfortable pull on top, sleeveless if it's hot. In winter I live in my jeans anyway so wearing them to class is a natural thing for me. Fortunately for me (and others around me) I don't tend to sweat that much, unless the air conditioning is playing up.

To parties, I generally dress up a bit, though not usually overboard. I still want to feel comfortable so again it's pants or 3/4 pants quite often. Though lately I have been wearing a lot of skirts. I wear the flarey ones when I want to do lots of spins. Nothing like encouraging the leads to do what I feel like!! I'm just going through an unusual girly phase at the moment.

I generally save my dresses for exams and mini-comp days, not that I have that many, probably only two or three, but I just feel like I need to dress up a bit more for these occasions.

dresses, skirts, trousers, jeans - i'll wear any and all depending on how i feel. usually wear the heels but sometimes just want to wear my bloch sneakers and then its got to be trousers/jeans.

dressing up (or down) is a big part of the fun of going dancing. my partner and i realised some time back that we were getting caught up in the dress up and perform schema at salsa and made deliberate choices to dress down and put less pressure on ourselves. it worked :) we also decided to come up with different faces for each style of dance to remind ourselves to just relax and stay connected. there were some very strange faces we pulled while dancing (and still do from time to time when we remember and want a laugh :D )

longish skirts with hangy bits can be a trap with dips ie catching your 3" heel in the hem and trying to not fall over & stay cool while partner is trying to bring you up out of dip and has no idea what on earth you are doing!

have this gorgeous little dress. found in it rockmans (ie not expensive). a (non-dancing) friend tried it on and didnt buy it (cos she never spends money on anything) and it didnt really catch my eye. i was there the following wk and it was on special and i thought i would try it on and if it fitted i could buy it and share it with my friend. it fitted. i love it. i've never shared it with her yet! is close fitting, stretchy to move in but not skin tight, is black with big red roses, just simple with straps, covered all over with clear sequins. (partner calls it my fish scale dress). had it a few years now. it fits whatever size i am. always but always gets great comments. is so easy to dance in. was almost "mugged" by a very sweet tranny the last time i wore it out to dinner. just entered the restaurant and heard a falsetto loudly just behind me "oh my god! i just love that dress!" he told me that there were two girls in the kitchen as well as him fighting over how to dispose of me and claim the dress

We are in the midst of a winter cold spell. Hate to have to overdress to get to a dance location. I spend the first half hour, shedding layers until I am left with a light weight knit top and slacks. Then to go back out in it, brrr! Put all those layers back on! No skirts until spring or unless I get dropped off at the door.

You come to my neck of the woods and I'll drop you off at the door. :)
