This is from a conversation that we had with the waitress we always have when we go dancing on Tuesdays...

The place is a bar not a dance place per se, but one of the local swing clubs uses their dance floor one night a week. When we go, we always have a couple of pitchers, something to eat, and tip well at the end of the evening (our waitress is stellar... before we sit down, there is a pitcher of lager, an ashtray, and two menus waiting for us!)

Now last Tuesday, the place was PACKED and we arrived late. I commented to our waitress that business must have been pretty good, but she said that it was LOUSY. All those people, and most are paying their cover and then drinking water they brought from home.

My question to you is do you support your dance venue? Or are you there for the dancing and that's it?

I personally can't see such a set up lasting indefinitely. The establishment is there to make money not provide dance space gratis. I've seen a lot of etiquette posts lately; is there an etiquette standard that involves supporting the venue where you dance?

(I mentioned a cover, but it's dirt cheap [$2.00] and I think the full amount goes to the swing dance club.)

Good question, foursquare. I usually pay the cover (cheap, as you say), buy two drinks during the night, and buy lots of bottled water throughout the evening. I don't buy food, because I usually don't eat while I'm dancing. And tipping is a given.

But I know what you mean. I have some dancing friends who buy as little as possible, and some who are cheap tippers as well. How can they expect dance venues to stay open that way?

I guess my question wasn't really a question but more of a caveat; the place knows who they're making money from, and if it's more profitable to have a room full of quiet diners than (albeit energetic and fun to watch) dancers, guess who they'll eventually choose to use that space.

(Just a side note Pygmalion: I always enjoy your posts!)
