K . . . I've been curious . . .
How many WCS dancers are there on the Dance Forums? If you've attempted it once, may or may not continue, or whether you think you are good or suck at it . . . please count yourself!
Lets have no discussion or anything here, just a straight number crunching time. One post per person . . .
I'll get it started: 1

Well, I wonder where they all are? I guess you two will have to take turns dancing with me...
(What's it called when two leaders take turns with a follower? I've gotten to do this a couple of times--too much fun! The other night I was dancing with my daughter--first my teacher cut in and took over leading--the next time he took her away and her partner stepped in to lead me. Then I got her back at the end.
We call it a pimp dance when a leader dances with 2 followers at the same time.)

Well, I wonder where they all are?
I posed this same question on another website that I moderate, ad it took a while for it to get going.
I guess you two will have to take turns dancing with me...
Now that's what I call an offer I cannot refuse . . . I'd love to . . .
(What's it called when two leaders take turns with a follower?
I've heard it called, *clearing throat* er, uh, . . . a threesome!

I've been the lead before in it, but I tried to be one of the guys once, with another guy and a female lead . . . my rookie follow abilities screwed us up.
Have you ever done the "fourplay" version for two couples doing a uison WCS?

twelve, my wife and i love this dance and the music is great. we are from new york and first learned this dance 15 years ago when we first attended BYU dance camp since it wasn't being taught on the east coast. It has finally arrived on long island where we live and it has really caught on and is being taught everywhere.

29. Only taken a few lessons, would like to get back to WCS, but is not a priority even if it is highly enjoyable
30.
WCS is my favorite dance. Unfortunately, there are very few westies here in Miami. There are probably only a couple dozen dancers here. There is a group up in Ft. Lauderdale, but that's more than 40 minutes driving every time. Miami seems to have a few hundred disco dancers, maybe a thousand Argentine Tango dancers, and literally about a million Salsa dancers. I try to make it to Ft. Lauderdale at least once every couple months.

31.
I have been dancing WCS for 1.5 years now. I had about a year of lindy beforehand that helped me pick up the dance quickly, but didn't understand the partner-connection thing until I took up WCS. The dance is great, but it is hard to find many people under age 40 who dance it here (not that I have a problem dancing with 40yos).

For real! What ever happend to Ochos? ;)
There have been and are going to be some interesting changes coming up in WCS. Festa's article on the Essence of WCS (http://swing-dancer.com/page.php?9) has got the ball rolling, but I know there were tons of discussions about what should be looked for in the different divisions (i.e. nothing but basics in novice) and how the judges were getting annoyed by showy people winning rather than people who had good connection and partnership. As well as a lack of swing content.
Festa has gotten a lot of feedback through the magazine, been quoted in newsletters, and sparked a fight on RAD. People are really starting to think about what it means to be dancing WCS.
The moves of the moment will constantly be changing, but I bet there's going to be some interesting movements and discussions in the next year or two about this dance.

I agree, and I still believe that the judges are all looking for/at the same things, and not, per say, showy stuff . . . not until you get way up.
Yep, you better know your basics, know how many vanillas you have to have before you can get some syncopations in, watch your frame, and so on . . . I'm definitely with you!

PS. Do you do any swing dancing in Sac? Where do you go? Several times a month we go to the Ballroom, but there is way too much C&W there for me.
Suggestions?
I haven't been dancing in Sac for about 8 mo. Try and contact the people at Capital Swing or Chuck Brown.

Thanks SuzieQ!!
Who's Richard? I'm drawing a blank... :(
I hope all is well with you and that you didn't get too snowed in.

Done 'taster classes' repeatedly over the years and decided to really try to learn it. A bit difficult as no classes near me... so it will be slow progress. Its a lovely dance though, so worth trying!

45!
Though I must make a confession: I also do lindy (please don't hate me). And east coast and all the ballroom dances, but that doesn't seem to draw as much ire.

Wait, why #49.5? I know you're a newbie, but you still count as a whole #50!

Welcome to DF. I been here two years and haven't stubble over this thread until you pulled it to the top. Twenty six post on your first day? You going for a record? ;)
So put me down for DF westie #51. I started dancing two years ago at the advance age of 52, and got into WCS about a year and a half because my instructor is nuts about the dance. I still consider myself a beginner level dancer. Hoping to see some evidence in myself that I might have capability to develop musicality so I can become a real dancer.

Thanks! Well, I started yesterday... Had quite bit of free time, hence all the responses, lol... Good luck and have fun, that's what it's all about! :)

If the count above is accurate, count me in.... 52? Started ballroom to learn how to samba, discovered East Coast was actually my favorite.... until West Coast Swing came along!
