This is just a link, guys, so please don't be offended. But I just read Josie Neglia's series of articles warning women about the evils of some men in the salsa scene. Some of this stuff seems extreme to me. Does it really happen? What can a woman do to protect herself from the worst of the sleaze?

Not offended at all!!!
It's good to be self-aware and responsible as things happen.
I've heard from ladies about a few nasty experiences that they have had with groping and real strong comming ons while dancing. It usually has been where there has been a relatively large age gap between follower and leader. In all but one of these cases the leader realized that what he was doing was inappropiate and apologized later.

Oh, boy. The good old swarthy, dark, sexy, abusive, cheating, lying, dancing, latin lover type. Gigolos come in all shapes and sizes and they like lots of different dances, not just salsa. I know some of those guys, and their "type". The funny thing is, they also recognize a "type". It is the whitebread, liberated, sex-starved, naive, beginning dancer family girl type with a deep down yearning to break free and be sexy.

I would tend to believe that applies to most every bar, club, social place that has singles and dancing. Yes???

Yes, Vince, I think it goes for everywhere. But take a look at the way people advertise certain dances. $ex $ells.
I am sorry. That was very cynical.

Something I've said to fellow lady dancers when we've discussed the advantage of dancing in venues outside of the bar/nightclub world; when a man asks for a dance he means just that and not can he take her home with him.

Maybe it is just my computer, but when I cruise around on Josie Neglia's site, I get a lot of noise from my Google popup blocker. They are all pornographic popups. It really goes wild when I click the section that says "Sexy Salsa Clothes." Hmmm.

Hmm. I have google toolbar, too, will35. But I run ad aware 6.0 at least once a week. Some things seep through somehow. Maybe you have spyware on your computer? Let's say this. 99% of the time, I pre-check the links I post, and I got no sexy pop-ups. I wonder why you're getting bombarded. :?

It must be something I did. Of course, I am not the only one who uses my computer. Hmmm.

The last time I had a computer virus, the silly virus planted itself in my programs directory, and had a cute and catchy-looking icon. So I just deleted it, while being careful not to open it. Or it may not be a virus. It could be your cookies.

If it is cookies there is a folder called cookies in your profile folder. :)

Unfortunately, men like these keep women like me from frequenting salsa clubs without male companionship.

Would it help to go with other girls?

I'm not sure if it would. I would ask a person in a group of girls to dance. So, those unwanted men would still keep coming, BUT now if a person has come with a male companion I would not be so quick to go over...

Yup, Salsero_AT, things can get rough in salsa clubs. For girls or guys!
