Several references have been made to them, but I still don't get it. exactly how DO Jack and Jill dance competitions work? It's a partner round robin, right? But how are the contestants judged? As a couple? Separately? Are there unique strategies for winning or placing well in Jack and Jill's? What dance skills are espacially needed?

Well for the one I've been in it works like this:
Your partner is drawn randomly
You dance as best you can with your assigned partner. Each of you is judged individually on how you lead and follow. Crowd applause
If you make it to the semi you draw new partners randomly again
Again judged individually on how you lead and follow. Panel of judges
In the finals you draw a new partners for the final time.
Again judged individually on how you lead and follow. Panel of judges
