Hi all,

This should be quick. Many folks on this forum use acronymns to refer to relationships e.g., DH, DW and probably many others too.

I want to be sure I understand what they stand for. Some are pretty obvious, like SIL= sister in law.

For me, and from what I've seen...

DH = Dear/darling/damn husband
DW = dear/darling/damn wife
LW = lovely wife
SIL/BIL/FIL/MIL = sister/brother/father/mother-in-law
SO = significant other

I can't think of others I've seen.

A few more:

DS - dear son,
DD - dear daughter,
XH - ex-husband,
XW - ex-wife.

Don't see these as much here, but:

MOTOS = Member of the Opposite Sex
MOTSS = Member of the Same Sex
MOTPS = Member of the Preferred Sex (all-purpose term)

old habits never die - I thought DH was Designated Husband and DW was Designated Wife. Now I know . . .

Just to be clear, an acronym is a word formed made up of the first letters or parts of words. Being a word, it can be pronounced. Some of the things above are abbreviations but not acronyms.

I will now return you to your regularly scheduled dance pedantism ;-)

That would, then, not be an acronym. ;)
