View Full Version : Dancers don't wear watches...?

Just realised it. I haven't seen a dancer wearing a watch for AGES. I stopped wearing a watch 6 years ago (it stressed me out) but I've also noticed that very few people who dance also wear a watch.
It's natural, of course. It takes up space and doesn't help at all. Plus it can get broken in the heat of a dance.
Do you wear a watch? Is it big and bulky? Do you rely (like me) on your cellphone to check on the time?

T_EOn a social night I will rely on my cellphone - but when I am teaching I will wear a watch so that I can manage the time of the class/lesson properly unless the venue has a large clear clock for me to refere to

Ever since I got a cell phone, I stopped wearing watches. I think I had needed to get my watch repaired and I never got to, never missed it.
I remember I wanted to buy an expensive watch a couple of years ago, but I was short in money, so when I thought about it I realized that I hadn't been wearing a watch for many years, so I managed to resist buying it.
Not wearing a watch seems to fit with the dancing.

Once I started dancing I stopped wearing a watch and I used to be obsessive about wearing one. But in my first few dance lessons the instructors always made a point about "wearing a watch is kinda bad dance etiquette" as the watch can get caught in the followers hair, snagged on the dress, or just feel a little awkward/hard. Ditto for larger rings... so I stopped wearing my college class ring as well..

That first year dancing I still wore the watch and ring, but would take them off every day for practice, but that extra on/off cycle every day seemed to wear out the band faster and after it broke I never replaced it.

I always wear a watch but take it off for dancing. Partly because it gets all sweaty.

I still have one. At the moment it is somewhere on the bottom of my dancebag. I take it off when I am dancing. Somehow it started interfering. I still wear it around. It's not large, its dial is a little smaller then 1/2 inch.

My finger was broken as I was spinning around one time on a lesson. I hit the bottom bone of my middle finger on the top of my hand against the face of a students watch. He had sorta stuck his hand out in an attempt to catch my connection, but he really wasn't going for and got in my way more than anything. Broke my bone but not his watch...

Plus my hair gets caught in them. I don't like watches anymore.

I remember one of your posters where you're wearing a quite bulky black watch. Is that before the finger-breaking incident?

I wear a watch only, when I am working. Very few at socials, never when I take a class.

I rely on my cellphone and computer clock.

Not a watch, an antique onyx cuff bracelet of my Grandmothers. I only wear it on special occasions. It is one of my favorite possessions.

This is why I need to wear my contacts more often. My glasses are not up to date with my myopic eyes.

I don't wear a watch not even for working. I stopped wearing one years ago, because I would get distracted and look at my watch more which makes for a very long day of work lol!

I used to wear a Mickey Mouse watch until pagers came out over 10 years ago, then cell phones. Never went back. Lucky for me it's not the style in dancing.

I have seen some male dancers wearing watches while dancing in pro/am competitions. Made me want to smack them.

I never wear a watch or rings when I am dancing with teachers or partners (I will however wear my wedding ring if I am practicing alone). With all the fast spinning and close proximity it is too easy to whack someone with an item or get something caught in it....

I didn't wear a watch when I had a cell phone, but now that I don't have one I'm wearing a watch again. I don't usually wear it while dancing because it's too loose on my wrist and keeps sliding down. I never would wear it while competing or performing.

I like to wear watches; I'm something of a collector. I wear one most places I go. But not while dancing. Besides the hazards that Larinda and others mentioned, I just don't think it looks good on a guy's arm while dancing. Plus, I don't like it flapping around on my arm while I'm dancing. If I go to a lesson or some such and I have a watch on, I take it off and put it in my shoe bag.

I learned way back in the fourth grade that when I took a test, I needed to take off my watch and place it face down on the desk, and if there was a clock on the wall, to avert my eyes from it. Otherwise, clock-watching would get me so spun up that I couldn't finish the test.

Hmm... I didn't start wearing a watch until I started dancing. I used to rely on my cellphone, but since I really don't want the distration of a phone when I'm dancing I picked up a watch. Haven't had any finger breaking or hair entanglement issues yet, hopefully it stays that way. Actually I've worn my watch for smooth when competing, my cufflinks were purchased with the watch in mind, so I just never thought to wear one without the other :(

The men I was referring to were the teachers.

I always wear a one. The watch I wear is fairly small and very thin - not like the gauges from the Titanic that are so popular today, and it has a soft leather band. While dancing, I wear it almost at the mid point on my forearm and always wear long sleeves. I never thought of it as an issue.
