What kind of dancing do you specialize in? I don't mean what kind of dancing you have experience with, because many of us have tried it all. :)
What do you train in/work on the most?

I work most on smooth and standard since I compete in those two. Some day, though, I am hoping to compete in all 4 styles. But it probably won't happen until I am done paying for my son's education.

I suppose your post already encompasses this, but I do a lot more Standard, simply because that's what I've been focusing on; lately I'm making a renewed effort in Latin, and know I'll get there too.
I think there are a lot of people out there like me, some of whom eventually stop working on one style, or who go on to become ten-dancers. Or compete in one style and teach or dance others for fun and profit. For example, I'd love to do more Smooth also, but simply haven't had the time to increase my level, but I imagine I'll be involved with it on some level. I wish I would suddenly find an extra 20 hours per week I don't know what to do with.

Same here, I dance only standard, and train only in this style. Would love to bring up the level of my latin, but there is no time..

I've been going back and forth between latin and standard for years, depending on which sort of partner I can get my hands on at the time. :)

if there is anyone on DF left who doesn't know it...standard and smooth are my favorite, and I also do rhythm and latin...dabbled in the rest...I am thinking this thread belongs in general dance if you are really curious re some of the other styles

I don't know what to vote. Currently I do a very strange mix of dances. I do Rhythm and Smooth, but with lots of Latin/Standard technique and we also do dances that aren't in Rhythm, such as Jive and Samba. Plus I do more Latin/Rhythm than Smooth/Standard, so should I vote for Latin? Rhythm? Both? :?

I haven't specialized in anything. What's the expression - jack of all trades and master of none. That pretty well sums it up.

I'm with you, Purr and T_E.
I do mostly Argentine tango. But I can muddle my way through smooth (except vw) pretty effectively...and I love QS...I do mostly rhythm...but can be persuaded to attempt a samba...
I intend to start working on standard more than anything else, though. Starting with my lesson this Friday. For medal tests.

For the past year I've been Smooth+Rhythm, for about two years before that only Latin competitively, and was a 19-dancer before that. I'm much happier as a 9-dancer these days.

I should point out that I think the results of this poll will be highly biased toward smooth/rhythm/standard/latin, it being conducted in the "ballroom dance" section of this board...

If anyone knows how to move this poll to a proper section, just let me know.
I'm the one, lonely little vote for Argentine Tango?
Alright, it's time for me to do some serious work corrupting you people! :raisebro:

I train in International Standard, latin and argentine tango. I guess most of my time goes into working on my standard but all 3 feature pretty highly!

American smooth which I love and plan to go to open soon. Fascinated by International Latin and I just changed to a British Pro trained in Latin from childhood so I'm very excited about that. Technique is so challenging but I wellcome a good challenge! Some lessons in standard, Would love to do Pro-Am 10 Dance, that's my ultimate goal.

Lindy & associated swing type dances, and lately AT, are my dances...
What, no POLE dancing included in the POLL?

I was doing Smooth + Rhythm for a long time and started to compete in them, then I switched Rhythm for Standard. Even though I've been doing it for less than a year, my Standard is better than my Rhythm ever was. I am hoping to go back to it at some point and compete in 4 styles, though. Just a dream of mine.

I'm with you! I might know a lot of dances, but I'm no master in any of them lol. Country Western was my favorite, because I caught onto the dances really quickly. However, I'm loving my intermediate Tango class with my new instructor at my new studio. Although, I haven't had intermediate classes in anything else to see if I like them too lol. So, my mind might change yet once again lol.

Does anyone specialize in rhythm/latin combo (without smooth or standard)? Just curious. I know personally people specializing in smooth/standard (myself included), smooth/rhythm (used to be one of those) or rhythm/standard. I find that smooth/standard combo is a lot easier for me than smooth/rhythm.

I've known several smooth/latin 9-dances, but aside from some first year college couples I don't know any latin/rhythm only dancers. (On some teams with extreme gender imbalances the ladies end up doing either rhythm/latin or smooth/standard... of course most of those teams don't really distinguish the styles for the first few months)

These stats are interesting. It has often seemed that many of the DF regulars specialized in Standard/Smooth.
I'm not sure how representative the survey really is...

Well, I never go by what polls have to say. Not because they are rigged etc., but they are never truly accurate. I mean you look at this poll, and how many people have answered compared to how many people are actually on this forum lol. See, it's just not really accurate, but it's still really fun and it gives you some idea as to what you wanted for an answer.

I know there are more than 6 AT dancers. Either they mostly specialize in other dancers or haven't seen the poll or don't know how to vote or don't care...

But in any case, this poll is probably representative of many of the most active DFers. And I wonder if dance specialty is at all correlated with the demographics of that group? Age etc...

I think the poll pretty much covers everything. It does not mention non-partner dancing, but everything else is there.
