I'm headed up there, especially because I didn't get to go to Atlanta this past weekend (and I can stay with a friend!). From what I understand, there's a Stuck on Salsa costume party (pre-party) on Friday night and the party at the studio on Saturday night. I know a lot of folks from NC are going, as well as some people from NYC.

I know some people from down south are comming. I don't think many people from NYC though. The SOS party is at the Carribean Breeze restaurant, which has a hard tile floor and is not conducive to dancing. The clavekazi event on Saturday will probably be better, especially if it doesn't rain.
I'm leaving the DC area this weekend to head up to NYC. There are a lot of pre-Holloween events and socials, which is why most NYC salseros will probably stay in town.
Friday, for instance, there are 3 socials in NYC. Mambofateegz, Frankie Martinez, and Angel Ortiz.

On Saturday, there are parties being given by MamboD, Mario B and also Descarga Latina (Nelson Flores) and some others as well.

On Sunday is the Jimmy Anton social. However, this is not the regular social. It's Jimmy Anton's birthday, which is always one of his best socials.
With all this going on I will definately be leaving the DC scene for NYC for some hardcore mambo and I'm sure I won't be the only one. Have fun in DC!!

Thanks for hurting my feelings! :( Seriously, NYC sounds GREAT this weekend. I really can't travel so far-I've got thesis work to do! But I'm actually thinking about going home to Philly the weekend before Thanksgiving, so it would be cool to hear what things are going on in NYC. I'm seriously thinking about trying to take Eddie Torres' Sunday class.

Just keeping it real, lol. I think you will have a great time in DC. Just passing on the info about the floor at CB so you can wear the right dance gear. Orlando, one of the best dancers in DC, is having his birthday that night so there will be a good mix of dancers there.
I saw the routine that clavekazi will perform last week. It's not bad and they are having a workshop before the party. I haven't seen the new venue that they are planning to use so I don't know how big it is, but there will definately be some good salseros there.
When you go to Philly or NYC be sure to hit me up. Eddie's classes are great but they have about 70 people so there might be some other options, depending on where you are staying and what you plan to work on. Again, have fun if you make it to DC.

So should I not wear my regular dance shoes? What would you recommend? (It's supposedly a costume party anyway.)

What would you use to dance on hard title? I've heard complaints from people that have been there that their ankles and feet hurt more than usual the next day. Its almost like dancing on concrete. SOS ordered a portable wooden floor when they had their last big event there, but they're not doing that this time (I don't think). You might be able to wear your regular shoes, but it might be good to bring some dance sneakers or something with some cushion just in case. Also, baby powder might be more necessary for spins. I try to avoid a hard surface like that so I'm probably not the best one to ask. Perhaps some others are used to dancing on hard tile floors.

Just wanted to add that I had a great time in DC this past weekend. I thought the level of dancing was much higher than usual (well, at least in my scene) and everyone seemed to be having so much fun. Salcero was 100% right about the dance floor at Caribbean Breeze though--horrible! I brought my dance shoes, but didn't bother to put them on after all. I thought my street shoes served me just as well (well, actually, better).
The costume party at Caribbean Breeze was a blast! Lots of fun costumes and tons of good leads! I danced with this one guy, Georgio (?) from Vancouver who was such a great lead. He told me that the Vancouver Congress is always a blast (hint, hint, thespina???). Aldolfo and Melissa (former principal dancers of the Eddie Torres company) performed and they were great. Lots of musicality and wonderful timing! Now I really want to take a class from ET himself! The only drawback was my afro wig--I was sweating like crazy all night! (People did give me lots of props for it, though!)
Saturday, just hung out with my friends and shopped. The party at the Clavekazi studio was just great! Packed to the brim with great dancers. Adolfo and Melissa performed again and there was also the ClaveKazi men's performance, which I've seen Shaka and perform at the DC Congress. I really liked it. Ismael and partner performed as well. I thought his routine was good, but not up to his usual standard, IMO. There were other performances from other local groups that ranged from mediocre to downright awful,I'm sorry to say. Could have really done without them and had a bit more dancing (although the time change gave us an extra hour). Another highlight of the evening was definitely when the drummers started going and playing afro-cuban rhythms. Betto (Herrera) and Magna were some of the ones who REALLY rocked it out! I would've liked to dance, but I was a little nervous, being as I'm not always sure which dances go with which rhythms. Anyway, had some more dances, and finally worked up the nerve to ask Jareau! He's a great lead, but ladies, you have got to stay awake! He does some stuff that I ain't seen before!
Anyway, supposedly ClaveKazi is bringing in guest instructors once a month to teach and have a social. I will definitely be going back!

If you like the DC scene, you might want to consider the monthly Luvin The Mambo socials. They are held in a real dance studio and have a guest teacher every month. Last month was Thomas from Santo Rico. This Sunday is Darlin Garcia http://www.imambo.tv/mambo/index.php?option=com_zoom&Itemid=47&page=view&catid=112&PageNo=1&key=3&hit=1 from Philadelphia's Art In Motion. In the past instructors have included Betto Herrera, Mario B, Lee Rios, and Ismael Otero. They are usually on the first weekend of the month. Here is the link: http://www.luvinthemambo.com/

DC is one of my favorite scenes--friendly people, great dancers.
Glad you had a good time; hopefully it made up for missing ATL.
Yes, Georgio is a fabulous lead, eh? He travels like crazy and is making quite a name for himself anywhere he goes!
