Thanks, Spratt. :D
I want Joey to go next. I still find him very stiff in his moves. Monique is doing great (if only they gave them real MUSIC!) but I'm afraid she'll go next. Then again, she's the only woman. We'll see how they do...
Anyone know what they're dancing next?

Monique I'm afraid will have to really work hard to beat the men, but Louis I think is really gaining a lot of fans for the little things that he does for them (has anyone seen his latest blog)! I can see Joey going next. I was afraid of that though, because I really like Joey. But those two have been in the bottom two though the most. I don't think that anyone else has that's left have they? It would be neat if they could pull forward and just show everyone, but it might be to late for that. Although, if Emmit wins that will be hilarious, because that will be one that no one will expect. I love Emmit though, but I'm afraid he'll end up in the bottom two one of these days! But at least if anything at all everyone that is left deserves to be there no matter how you might feel about them like I mean if they aren't your favorite etc. That's what I like about this season the most I think, because I haven't felt this way before while watching DWTS.

Weeell. I saw a couple of Stacy's dances and I just didn't like them. The girl had cool legs, but that was pretty much it. No flavour at ALL. At least Drew had a bit of a thing. Not that I liked him either, actually. *hides*
Anyways. Mario has IT. And if he keeps working hard enough, he'll win this gig. If he slacks... he'll be slaughtered.

Really? See now I liked both Stacey and Drew. I liked Drew better just because he was sooooo grateful about everything kind of like Joey is this season. You can really tell that they are enjoying themselves in other words. I mean not that the others aren't, but they express themselves more with gratitude than some of the others. Maybe I'm not saying that right lol. But anyways, we still have what three weeks left right and anything can happen I guess at this point! I mean the women might all want to start voting for Monique lol, I don't know. It's fun. Do you know what dances they are doing this week?

Part of me thinks that Stacey went away because she wasn't
a family person. You know, husband and kids at home and
all that. I don't know. It's just like politics. Something
completely irrelevant can distract the voting public from the
real prize...
But it's all just good fun, so let's enjoy it. I have to say that
the first season had much more meaning to me, maybe because
I'd actually taken lessons from one of the pros.

I didn't even think about that. I think that at the end that Stacey just gave up once Drew started getting 10's. I think that for some people that either motivates them to work harder or some give up completely and I think that Stacey just gave up completely.

See, I had met Drew and his brother Nick when they came to my city a few years back. So, I kind of favored last season more than anything else. I also had seen Joey in concert though when I was a kid, and he comes to my city for some reason a lot now. Well, not a lot but more than most. So, it was neat to see both guys on there. I have never met Joey though, so it wasn't as personal as seeing Drew again. That was incredibly cool for me, so I understand what you mean by when you see someone that you know on there that it becomes more personal. Oh and I have emailed Louis and he's written back personally and he completely acknowledged everything that I had said and put everything into his own words, because that's the kind of person he is. And I only did that because someone dared me to (not mentioning any names lol). So, ok I favor Louis now too, because he put a personal touch in his email as well lol! ;)
Anyways. Mario has IT. And if he keeps working hard enough, he'll win this gig. If he slacks... he'll be slaughtered.

Emmitt has Cheryl and she knows how to choreograph the dances in order to make the couple look good and has won it before. I think he also may have the largest fan base and his recent performances may have won him some more fans including me. While i think Karina is spectacular, sometimes its too much about her and not enough about Mario who does have the moves.
Maybe I'm too distracted by Karina.
T_E
Karina is great. For example, I really liked her performance in the rumba routine she and Mario danced. But in that dance, I didn't think Mario contributed a whole lot to the routine, while Kario did all those fantastic moves around him. I would have like to have seen him dancing more, doing something, and actually leading her.
But that's just my opinion.
While i think Karina is spectacular, sometimes its too much about her and not enough about Mario who does have the moves.
Exactly.

I agree. I feel like Mario could do more but doesn't. I don't know if it's the ADD, the pressure, the fact that Karina's so good that they think he can cruise by on her...whatever it is, he just doesn't seem to put in as much effort as the others. On the same note, I think what he does [technically] is way below what the others accomplish: proper footwork, leading, frame, body movement, connection, etc.
I mean, the judges flat out said that his standard had no heal leads, and he still got good scores. Unlike Jerry, who showed tremendous improvement since the show started, Mario didn't seem to grow at all in the time he's been here
alemana
10-30-2006, 11:43 AM
he's been able to coast on the ability level he had going into the comp.... and he also does a much better job projecting "ease" in his face than most of the celebs do. so even if he IS trying, he doesn't show it. contrast that to someone like Monique, who radiates effort.

I thought it was going to be a competition between Joey and Mario. From the beginning, Mario has lived up to my expectation, but Joey has fallen short many times throughout the show. My real surprise is Emmitt. I can't believe his ease. He is the best "dancer" on the show, meaning he lets it flow better than anyone out there. Mario is the most "talented dancesport competitior" on the floor every week; no one on the show can produce the level of technique nor can anyone else execute the complex patterns karina makes him perform.
I dont know how the show will turn out, but I do think it will come down to Mario and Emmitt. I think Karina can learn from Cheryl (really from the people who choreograph Cheryl's routines - note: this is not hearsay; I have spoken to Cheryl and the people who help her create some of her routines) and sacrifice the competition quality of the choreography and infuse more ease to soften Mario. That would allow Mario to look in control and less frenzied on the floor.
waltzgirl
10-30-2006, 04:42 PM
I agree. I think that was what Cheryl was referring to when she said Emmitt dances like every man wishes he could. I'd say E dances like a very good social dancer, while Mario dances like a pretty good dancesport dancer.
That's not meant as a comparison of quality, just of style. I do both, and on a Friday night, I'd rather dance with Emmitt.
I mean, the judges flat out said that his standard had no heal leads, and he still got good scores.
IMO, there's been some serious score inflation as the season has gone on.

IMO, there's been some serious score inflation as the season has gone on.They started the season scoring too high, and now the judges have backed themselves into a corner. The range of scores for the dances tonight is probably going to be 27-30. The judges have made themselves into a total non-factor in the competition.

I'm so afraid that Louis will undergo the same fate as last year. Last year he also got eliminated just before the final (undeserved). The week beofre he was in the bottom two (just like this year) with the funny older guy (see the connection :p).

Well, at least this time they got a real World Class standard couple performing! We haven't had any top pros performing (as a couple) in DWTS showing off what standard is about.
The closest was Charlotte/Nick (but it was very little standard, more smooth).

Well, it's either going to be Monique or Joey if they can't get the audience votes this week. They both have been in the bottom two more than anyone else. So, my guess is that they are the next two to go. I'm not so sure about what order though.

10-31-2006, 04:27 PM
IF the judges don't step up and score the couples on their actual dancing as opposed to the entertainment scores they have been giving, then the audiance's popularity score will determine who goes and who stays. As I see it, the judges are more concerned with not having the studio audiance boo them than they are with actually scoring the dance elements of the routines. This is clearly evident if you go back and look at the comments of the judges and scores from the first season. The judges have sold out this season and it is purely a popularity contest. It is sad.

10-31-2006, 04:32 PM
I think they are also trying to avoid the controversy of the first season. By leaving it up to the audience, they aren't to blame for the outcome.
SYTYCD was at least honest about it. They always called it a contest for "America's Favorite Dancer," not the "best" dancer.

Then ABC should be honest with everyone and just let the judges comment but not vote. I wonder if the judges get any pressure from the producers to "act nice and score high". Just thoughts of mine, lol.

Hmm... I think that ABC has improved since season 1, but there will always be controversy on that show. I think that in order for them not to say there is any controversy is to say it's not a real dance competition, because we all know (as dancers I should say) that it's not. That's what gets me irritated. But that's also one of the reasons why I don't vote.
SYTYCD was at least honest about it. They always called it a contest for "America's Favorite Dancer," not the "best" dancer.
I like that idea too! I think that if DWTS was more honest with the viewers that at least they'd have the respect that they want instead of having to fight for it every season.

That's the thing though-- Louie needs to remember that he's working with someone with limited experience and limited time to learn a routine. It's admirable that he's pushing her, but he needs to remember that an easier routine done really really well looks much better than a more complex routine done just "ok."

The judges said that they expected the dancers to be top notch at the beginning of the season, because they were given more time to practice etc. (in fact I think it was Len). That's what Louis is doing, and the judges are scoring high on dances that should not be given nine's and ten's. But again this is why I don't vote, because they did this during season 1 and 2 as well, and it became frustrating.

This is true, yes. But, you can still look (and be) top notch without doing something that is way beyond your ability and seriously hurts your chances of making it to the next round. Out of the three dancers so far, Monique has looked the least polished. Louis should take a page from Cheryl-- Monique has so much talent to work with, and there's so much he could do with her, he just needs to know when to stop pushing for "something that's hard for even pros to do."

Joey got screwed by his songs this week. But Edyta's naughty pirate queen outfit was great.
I think Monique was wearing a gray jumpsuit -- a Ghostbusters' uniform perhaps?

How gorgeous was Cheryl's costume for that rumba?!? Cheryl always looks wonderful, but that white number wins my vote for outfit I would personally most like to try on.
Great number too! (I'd call that song a cha-cha, but hey...that doesn't even make the list of musical crimes this season.)
***********
Wild-eyed conspiracy theorist moment, but...Do you think Carrie Ann was forced to score Joey higher than Mario? I otherwise can't understand why she would mark Joey's tango higher than Mario's waltz. Joey was entertaining, but he didn't get down into his knees enough, and his tango just wasn't stalk-y. Mario's waltz wasn't perfect, but it was awfully good. He turns with surprising ease for a guy without dance training.
***********
Notably, Mario/Karina's music has sucked less than that of some of the other contestants, especially Louis/Monique. (I will also add that this week Joey's paso song was up there with the very worst.) My personal theory is that either Karina has it written in her contract "Ms. Smirnoff will not be forced to dance to any sucky songs" OR that when they give her a crummy song, she goes in there, smacks the tape down, and says "This is crap" in a severe accent. She then fixes them with her best paso stare until the production people cower before her obvious awesomeness and give her a somewhat more acceptable song.

Who decided Monique should wear a latin costume for tango? What a bad idea! I replayed it, blocking out the area between her hips and feet with my thumb. It looked a lot better. The Groucho Marx semi-squat necessary for tango just isn't an attractive way to present bare legs.

Am I they only one, or do you also think the judges are losing it this season. From the beginning the have been overscoring Mario and Emmitt and underscoring Monique and Louis (especially last week and the week where Mario did the Mambo). They are giving way to much tens. For example: last week Joey and Mario both danced a Slow Foxtrot without heel leads. How in earth can you give 10 - 9 - 10 for a Slowfox without heel leads? You shouldn't get any higher than 8's if you don't have heel leads. The same goes for Joey's Tango with his 10 - 9 -9. Again: no higher then 8's if you don't do the heel leads!
Btw I don't know who said it anymore, but I agree to the fact we should be able to vote off Samantha, boy she's annoying.
My two cents worth, for the best dances for the night:
Emmitt & Cheryl's foxtrot; great choreography; good execution by Emmitt; song was actually a foxtrot; loved Cheryl's dress!
Joey & Edyta's tango; again, great choreography appropriate for The Adam's Family; very entertaining; liked Joey's fangs

I think Cheryl and Karina get my votes as best choreographers (Louis was up there until last night; I think he just went a bit over Monique's head). Cheryl is probably #1 for me, though because I think she keeps it simple enough and I find myself looking at both dancers; with Karina, I'm looking at her. The few times I did look at him, I noticed he had stopped moving his feet and was trying to guide her along. I am going to be studying Cheryl's rumba for days! Masterful!

Ditto, what a shame, the whole time I was thinking that she would have looked so much better with a more appropriate dress on.
I was really hoping for her to come on strong last night but, it seems like the girl has so much stacked against her, questionable music, more complex choreography, and then on top of it all the dress choices.
And she's working so hard too...

Thanks for confirming my uninformed opinion. Cheryl has done the best job choreographing to her partner's strengths. It would be interesting to see how she does with a Jerry Springer or George Hamilton type.
It seems like Karina is choreographing to win, even if it means having Mario just stand around so that she can look good (which she does). Louis is also choreographing to win, but he's making Monique do an equal amount of work and she can't keep up. Then again, it would be weird if Louis was flouncing around all over the place while Monique just stood there.
The vids are up at MOIB (http://www.myoxisbroken.com/moibArticle.asp?optArticleID=250), including a clear shot of Cheryl putting her hand on "Little Emmitt" during the Rumba.

I thought the best dance was the Samba by Karina and Mario. Yes, she's so fabulous that's hard not to look at her... but he's very talented and is doind an amazing job!!
Emmit's was ok, but too basic for me. He just did a few cucarachas, basic steps and lines. Of course, he looks more natural... he doesnt have the stress of trying to do something very difficult or different... but I agree that he has good rhythm... but I wanted to see more.
Monique is talented, but I agree with the judges. It's all over her heard and Louis is such a wonderful dancer that overpowers her. I hated the Cha more than the tango. I found her very off balance all the time, a lot ot oooops and didnt you guys see that he fell on top of her at the end. They recover quickly but instead of appreciating their performance/talent I find myself worried that something is going to go wrong! I think she's very talented is just that I havent had the chance to appreciate it.
I hope Joey and Mario are the finalist since those are the performances I'm always looking forward to watch!!

Victor and Anna are absolutely fabulous professional standard dancers. They are regular semifinalists at all major Professional World Standard events, and are 2nd in the United States.
Victor is a long-time, multiple amateur standard champion who won the title with two of his sisters and multiple other partners too. He danced with Tiffany Fung, Aira Bubnelyte, Ieva Pauksena, Liene Apale among others...
Anna is a wonderful dancer, I don't know quite as much about her as about Victor.
They are based out of Los Angeles, but spend a lot of time in England. They are not only great dancers, they are great people too. Their show to Beethoven's 5th brings tears to my eyes every time I see it - it is sooo good...

Heh. I was wondering if anyone else noticed that ;) Looked like he was wearing boxers too (thank god). Can't hide much in white pants
re: Mario, he did indeed have heel leads in his basic steps. Much of it was swoopy Open Smooth work though, and while perhaps he was a tad too high on his toes on some of that, the overall softness was lovely. Didn't much care for the heavy eyeliner though ;) I really felt like Mario had lost his spirit after the judges ripped him a new one for his "illegal" Tango a few weeks ago, and was being too cautious and closed in his dancing. Last night he was BACK, and I was thrilled to see that. Glad to learn that it doesn't all come easy to him. Ms. Karina is quite the harsh mistress! Apparently it works for Mario though, much as he gripes about it. As for Joey, both of the routines were a little too weird for me to really focus on his dancing, but the Tango looked too choppy/bouncy and not stalk-y enough. Other posters have already said what I felt about Monique's Tango -- *not* attractive, and not cleanly executed. Clearly she's trying her damndest though, so I give her full credit for that.

While i agree that the routine was not complicated, i thought that emmitt's technique and hip movement(on the opening outs) were actually good international style(straight legs) and surprised me as i thought the rhumba would be his worst dance. i would like to see more softness in his hands and arm movement. i HATE HATE HATE that waltz they gave to karina - every time i hear it at a comp (which is OVER AND OVER) i have a conniption - but i loved their dance so much, i totally forgot how much i loathe that music. they TOTALLY convinced me. totally.
and her samba... i never looked at mario ONCE.
emmitt surprised me with the body action in the rumba. i mean ok, he's not going to win any championships anytime soon, but for a manly man of his age to work the hips like that - i really give him props, and moreso to cheryl, who has emerged as the most consistently brilliant partner-coach-choreographer of the entire American series of DWTS thus far.
i liked Edyta's tango, which suprised me. Emmitt's foxtrot - also great.

What about move your hips with the best basic ballroom technique of any of the celebs all season while executing very clean basic syllabus material? And doing so while looking comfortable and natural? Meanwhile showing a clear connection to your partner and the audience? And being most fortunately backed by some simplistically brilliant choreography and a fantastic lady on your arm? Because that's what I saw when I watched it.

To me it's weird how his image doesn't jive with his personality. He has this tough guy image with his shaved head and all, but he's goofy like a little kid. As for his dancing, I wish he'd stop 'bee-bopping' his head like he does in his tap routine.

Lol! I do think that she's the most beautiful of the women. She is just so classy and elegant etc., and she would be someone that I would look up to for reasons like that. The others are just not my style though, and I wouldn't care to dress like them any etc. And I do like the way she can instruct. Some high level instructors have a hard time teaching to new students (I wonder if this is Karina's problem), but Cheryl has seemed to be able to work with everyone that she gets just fine. And you know someone complained that Cheryl was getting to much air time outside of DWTS, but those are some of the reasons why I think anyways! ;)

Well, it would be fun to see someone like Emmit win. But Mario just doesn't do anything for me. However, I remember him on the television show way back when and he didn't do anything for me then either. But he is a good dancer though. Lol! See, I look at it completely opposite actually. I find that by talking dance with you guys makes the show more enjoyable than with people that don't know how to dance, or could care less, or that like to gripe the whole time (I'm thinking of the ABC board and my family that could care less lol). I feel as though we should all be sitting down in one room and eating popcorn and drinking or something lol. It's up at MOIB (http://www.myoxisbroken.com/moibArticle.asp?optArticleID=251) (and YouTube, of course).
And I wouldn't worry, anp. I think the general public gets it when they see a performance like the one by Victor and Anna. I'd assume that's what most people think of when they think ballroom. The pretty princess dancing --not some of the more overtly sexy Latin dances. Most people can see themselves dancing a waltz, but not a samba.
Nothing against Latin, of course. I'm just a Standard girl at heart.

I echoed this comment! My eyes did fog up! I had to watch the tape as well & I watched it several times. Such emotional & breathtaking performance. I've watched their showcase performance & many of their comps. They've always been wonderful performers. But this time, I must say they've outdone themselves! In such a small ballroom, they're able to move so fluidly, effortlessly & w/ such emotion. I felt that Anna was the soul of that performance. Of course, Victor was wonderful & handsome as usual :)
This was truly the best singing & dancing number of all the seasons combined!

I think that Louis is the reason Monique is not in the finals. I think he pushed her too far with the complicated choreography he gave her. I think if she had been able to concentrate more on her technique with more basic material she would have looked much better. This is what Cheryl did for Emmitt. Learning two dances in such a short time has to be incredibly difficult for people who have never danced latin or smooth and to be able to remember all the technique(heel leads, staight legs, connection, frame, eye contact etc.) which is what makes it look really good seems close too impossible.

They don't really have time to give them that much technique given that they're giving newcomers OPEN routines. I'm actually pretty amazed that some of them are able to do hip motion or body actions at all. It has taken me years to understand it, let alone do it. And at the end of the day, this show was clearly not created with the existing ballroom world in mind (otherwise you'd see them all doing bronze, silver, gold....and go through the "natural" progression). The silver lining to it all is that there are now a LOT of people really showing interest in ballroom dancing. It's all good :)

I agree with you to some extent. I think he's got an attitude, which kind of offs people. As for the choreography, unfortunately it's different between the men and women. I thought Willa had great technique (compared to the others) and she got booted...
The problem is that the couples compete with each other, which means that in many ways the female stars have to compete with the female pros. The audience remembers the flashy/fancy stuff, and it's much easier for a female pro to accomplish that.

Does the Pacific Dancesport Championships really draw in 2,000 competitors -- wouldn't that make it the largest competition in the nation? (Did he maybe mean 2,000 entries?) And I'm sure they were just trying to insert some drama, but that poor woman -- the pro seemed like he was trying to make her cry with all his comments about how harsh the judges will be on her when she competes.
And, wow, Victor and Anna were breathtaking. I have yet to see a negative comment about them in some of the other DWTS forums - the word "gorgeous" seems to come up a lot. :) I guess that just shows that nondancers can appreciate standard. Well, at least when its done exceptionally well.

Well, to get it down to basics, "Without You" is in 4/4 time, not 3/4, so that would rule out waltz immediately. Besides, the basic step in the very beginning is undoubtedly foxtrot to me...

The dance was definitly FT. To me, it was a tough music to do either FT or W. IMHO, only masters like Victor and Anna can digest the music and produce such a great dance. Of all the great songs, they picked a horrible song as usual. I wonder how many people can dance on this music correctly, if they play it in a competition. I hate Il Divo. This is a ticklish and sissy group of singers. They look like a bunch of transexuals. In fact, I hate everybody MQ likes. It looks like Victor is going to be the successor of Jonathan Wilkins in US.

I think you have a number of good points;however, as the professional, i think it was up to louis to give her material she good accomplish without stumbling or just running after him(tango-tuesday night). I believe she had the abilty to handle more technique and would have looked more proficient and while it might not have won over the fans as easily she would have been getting higher scores consistently from the judges which i believe does impact on the viewing public who are not dancers-she was always having to say she was going to try harder or looking as if she was not doing that well. Louis could have kept in some of the tricks but made the routines on the whole a lot easier.
My goosebumps got goosebumps. I just watched it again. It's just amazing how EASY they made that look.

Just watched it on MYOIB. Definitely a great performance to put on DWTS. Tacky singers, but the entire first section of their foxtrot is out of the syllabus or popular variations. Let's see... feather, reverse turn, three step, hover cross with a weave ending, reverse turn, extended wave... very cool to see that.

why does Karina have so much trouble teaching? It really gets me , when they show them rehearsing, that she is the one having meltdowns, collapsing in a chair virtually in tears, saying she can't take it any more. What's with that? Why is it harder for her to teach than anyone else, especially as she has one of the more talented pupils? She seems to be so temperamental, I am wondering if this is on purpose? Do they suggest she do this to add some excitement to the rehearsal scenes?

why does Karina have so much trouble teaching? It really gets me , when they show them rehearsing, that she is the one having meltdowns, collapsing in a chair virtually in tears, saying she can't take it any more. What's with that? Why is it harder for her to teach than anyone else, especially as she has one of the more talented pupils? She seems to be so temperamental, I am wondering if this is on purpose? Do they suggest she do this to add some excitement to the rehearsal scenes?
And you think all that stuff is real!

I was surprised to read that Lousi si doig the tour with Lisa Rinna. It's quite a long tour, a lot of cities, and I simply don't see what's in it for him or his career.
He and Lisa are business partners, and they obviously became buddies last season, so he gets to hang out with his pal for a couple of months. They'll be performing in front of huge crowds...much bigger than in his competitive days, even if his partner's not of the same talent-level. And I'd hope that the tour pays pretty well, considering how friggin' expensive tickets are.

I bet you that Louis is doing it because they'll probably give him top choreographing credit. He did one ballroom broadway-type show already and if the DWTS tour is a success, I bet there is nothing he'd love to do more than be a choreographer for other shows. A man of his creativity would seem to be drawn to such a job...

I think during the tour, Louis would be in demand in those local studios for private coaching as well. So it's win-win for him. In fact, if he's already in that city, the lesson fees might go down - instead of adding the travel expense on top of the lesson fee - thus more students!
