Hello everyone, Im 23 years old and want to enroll in a dance school in NYC. Ive never had any experience in dancing whatsoever, i am an actress and I need to learn how to dance modern jazz for a part. I have at least a year to prepare. How should I get instruction on this, attend a workshop or enroll in a school? Thanks.

Well... how well does your character dance? ;)

Welcome to the forums! It's great to have you with us! What part are you working on? Do you have the part yet?

I will say that it's considerably easier to take direction if you have a common vocabulary with your choreographer-- everyone appreciates that... or if they don't then they'd get really annoyed with the non-pyschic.

Welcome icd2001! :D Funky user name!!

No experience in dancing whatsoever? You mean to say you never have hung out with friends and moved your body to the music?

What kind of dance school? A dance studio that teaches jazz dance? Or a college/university dance program. I'll take a look around the web and see if I can find the fomer at least.

Welcome to the forums, btw. :D Sorry I mised your post earlier.

Try voiceofdance web site. You can search for dance schools by location. They also have colleges and dance academies listed. This may help you, sicne you're looking for non-partner dancing. If it's partner dancing you want, try dancespots.net. :)
