I am planning to travel to Puerto Rico on vacation, Dec 27 to Jan 3, a very important part of the trip http://www.salsaforums.com/images/smiles/icon_smile.gif is to dance as much salsa as posible http://www.salsaforums.com/images/smiles/icon_smile.gif

any of you have had a chance to check the salsa scene there? any suggestions, advice ?

I am checking on affordable places to stay and reading about the different cities, to see what each, has to offer. so any ideas will be very much appreciated.

And DF members from PR ??, it will be lovely to meet, and go dancing.

I've never been to PR but it's certainly on our list of "must go" places!

Have fun and enjoy. I will be honest that I haven't found much dancing on the west side of the island yet. I suggest staying in the metro area for dancing(unless you are coming with a partner, in that case the clubs on the west side will be fine. In fact if you bring someone to dance with even the grocery store will do.

I won't be around at that time but perhaps next time. Enjoy

pielcanela,

Sign up for the newsletter that I posted in the other thread at http://www.abailarsalsa.tk/. Every Wednesday this guy sends out info on all salsa events at present and in the near future. Of course, nothing has been announced yet for the time frame after Christmas you are mentioning. As far as I know, this is not a good time for salsa events. It is the Christmas season and there is a lot of Puerto Rican Christmas music. However, there are New Year's salsa dances with live bands (e.g. El Gran Combo, Gilberto Santa Rosa etc.) but they are very expensive ($150 and up). You can still check out the regular salsa clubs, most of them are in the newsletter. Read also boriquen_salsero's post in the other thread (Salsa in Puerto Rico), it contains some more clubs.

I wish I could be in PR this coming weekend. Check this out:
"Celebrando Los 30 Años de Gilberto Santa Rosa el Sáb, 18 de Nov en el Winners Sport Bar del Comandante en Canovanas. Además en tarima Willie Rosario y Tony Vega."

Can you imagine what a great concert this is going to be? Willie Rosario with Gilberto and Tony Vega! The good old salsa times relived! This will be phantastic! But unfortunately it will be without me....

Good luck and have fun!

The Marriot on Ashford in San Juan has salsa several nights a week. The Courtyard in Isla Verde, near the airport, has salsa several nights a week as well. The Courtyard attracts a more "local" crowd, the Marriot is mostly tourists. As I recall, the band was quite good in both locations. A friend of mine also told me the Hotel San Juan has salsa. The Courtyard also has an excellent PR food buffet, as close to mami's cooking as you can get without going home : ).

pielcanela,

I just received the latest newsletter for salsa in Puerto Rico. If you have not signed up for it and you are interested, send me your email address and I will forward it to you.

There is a dance on new year's eve, but expensive, as I predicted, and on January 4, there is super concert/dance: Ray de la Paz and Tito Allen! Wish I could go :(!

On Dec. 15 there is another super concert in Ponce: Eddie Palmieri with Victor Manuelle! This is going to be another real great one!!!

This is a great time to be in San Juan. New Years Eve is expensive but there are always great shows (w/the Biggies - Sonora, Gran Combo, Gilberto) the week before for a lot less (usually around $25). They tend to be at the hotels and are usually listed in the local periodico like "El Nuevo Dia" or "El Vocero".
