Casino Royale opens tomorrow. Anyone going to go see it?
I'm not a huge Bond fan, but I've really come to like some of the last few. I just love stupid movies with lots of things blowing up, cool gadgets, and fun stunds. Throw in a tux or two, and some corny-funny lines and I'm all there.
Now to convince DH to go with me...

Well, to be honest, am always dancing. LOL

Wasn't allowed to watch them growing up. Don't really watch TV or movies now. So, I've just missed them. I've probably seen 3 or 4, max.
But I liked the explosions!

My 11-year old wants to see this, but I'm sure it's inappropriate.
I read an article in the little freebie paper today about the female star of the movie and she said she didn't want to take a role in a chauvanistic movie where she's the sexual object (I'm paraphrasing), but I guess it's Bond this time coming out of the ocean with very little on, so perhaps the tables are turning a bit.
Anyway, there have been too many different actors playing the Bond part for me to wrap my head around *this* guy being Bond, so I am not sure I will see it until it comes to dvd.

I read that 007 didn't do quite as well in the US as in the UK, and in fact, Happy Feet came in ahead with higher sales/viewership. Gotta love those little penguins!

This one was nothing like the Pierce Brosnan movies. Daniel Craig as 007 went back to the basics of almost no special effects commando-style James Bond, the way he was back in the days of Sean Connery. The movie is mostly about Bond's first gig as 007, and how he finds the first true love of his life.
It has no nudity that I could remember, but it gets sensuous and violent at different times. Certaing a PG movie, if I were a parent, I'd let my kid watch it.
You walk out of the movie feeling sad for him. It's a touchy feely movie. If they had just done that romantic sap thing just a bit more, i'd have called it a chick-flick :)
Aside from all the gunfire, right?

OMG, saw it last night and this film ROCKED!!! http://www.salserosweb.com/phpBB2/images/smiles/coolio.gif
This is Bond at the beginning. When we first saw Bond in "Dr. No", he was already one tough cookie. Cold-blooded, extremely guarded, a love 'em and leave 'em player and agent at the top of his game. Here, he's more like cookie dough which ain't quite done baking. He's ruthless, practical, a "blunt instrument" (M's line and of her best in this film) but not without flaws. A few mistakes here and there, his guard isn't quite up all of the time and he doesn't emerge from every fight or situation unscathed. He take a licking but keeps on ticking. The fights, the action sequences, the card game, everything about this film just seemed so perfect and grounded in reality.
In the past 30 years or so Bond seemed too perfect, almost bulletproof and able to defy the laws of physics. He had become a joke. Not so much here. This is the new Bond and Daniel Craig was PERFECT in the role. Forget Lazenby, Moore, Dalton and Brosnan. Daniel's the best Bond since Sir Sean Connery's era.
Can not wait for Bond 22 when it comes out!! http://www.salserosweb.com/phpBB2/images/smiles/2006x-cited.gif http://www.salserosweb.com/phpBB2/images/smiles/woohoo.gif

Hmmm...not sure I'm such a fan of this "reality" stuff.
I LIKED the fact that he's so impervious it's rediculous. I LIKED the fact that he's become something of a joke.
Hmmm...will definitely have to go see it.

Really? Then you haven't seen the early films like "Dr. No", "From Russia with Love" and "Goldfinger". In those Bond's a cold-hearted killer and emotionally-suppressed/guarded individual. Towards the end of Connery's run and then, fully, with Roger Moore taking over the series, Bond became a joke, a caricature of a real agent and it sort of became hard to become invested in the character as you knew he'd survive and emerge relatively unscathed. Brosnan, at least with Goldeneye, brought some of the darker edge back into the character but the following 3 films were a little silly. It was time for new blood and taking the character back to basics was desperately needed. Now Bond's back and in fine form.

You shouldn't judge an actor or a movie's value based on its trailer. If I could make a suggestion?? (since no one likes being told what to do and I want to keep this civil). See the film first, then weigh in with your opinion.
Prior to seeing this film, my favorite Bonds were:
Connery
Brosnan
Lazenby
Moore or Dalton (it's a toss up. One was too silly and the other too serious)Now that I've seen Casino Royale (and eagerly await Bond 22 in November 2008), the list goes:
Connery
Craig
see above
Wasn't Lazenby Bond in only OHMSS? I hardly find that to be a suitable sample size.

Didn't David Niven play Bond in the first Casino Royale?
Didn't David Niven play Bond in the first Casino Royale?
As did Woody Allen. That film was more of a parody and loosely-bsed on the novel. Sort of like "Never Say Never Again" (a remake of "Thunderball"), it's not considered part of the film series.

also, the scenery in this movie was just stunning. It's one thing I've always enjoyed in Bond movies...I'll probably never see some of these places in person, but it's nice to get the flavor of some of the exotic and picturesque locales.
I quite enjoyed the film. The opening scene is the best foot chase scene I've ever seen in a movie (Ronin still has the best car chase).

DH and I saw it last night, finally.
Loved it as an action movie. Good chases, plenty of fighting, things exploding, shootouts...made me happy. LOVED it as an action movie.
A bit too much on the sappy side. I don't care about how he feels about the chick-y. If I wanted that I'd go watch a chick flick. I was there to see things get blown up. Although the girls did look stunning in those dresses.
Given that I first saw Brosnan as Bond, and had only seen the later, more parody-like ones and like them...it wasn't a "Bond" movie to me. I wanted more gadgets. The car was a cool substitute, but 't'was lacking in gadgets.
Overall, though, I loved it. Will have to buy it when it comes out on DVD. Kinda want to go see it again.

Has anybody seen the mid-sixties, parody version of Casino Royale? It came on BBC America (I think :? ) yesterday. David Niven (!!!!) played Sir James Bond. What a waste! I had no blinkin idea of when they were joking (most of the time, I suspect) and when they weren't. I think the jokes may have just plain been before my time... or else culture specific. Hated it! :(

Haven't seen it (though as a toddler I might have glimpsed it on TV back in the 70's) but I do know what you mean. It isn't considered canon in the film series (and neither is Never Say Never Again) and is only loosely, and I mean loosely, based on the novel.
Saw it and all I can do is completely DITTO your words! I wouldn't want anyone else playing the part after this. And boy, if they can just keep him coming out of the ocean like that in a few more movies, I'll be one happy camper!

I wasn't 100% clear either on or two connections either (Giancarlo Giannini's character) but I think that's intentional and may be something that's followed up on in Bond 22 in 2008. Same with Mr. White. Regarding the ocean scene, Craig said that he worked out pretty hard before filming began to get that physique. My gf was happy with that scene. :D
I quite enjoyed the film. The opening scene is the best foot chase scene I've ever seen in a movie (Ronin still has the best car chase).
That chase scene featured Parkour (aka freerunning) and the runner, Sebastien Foucan, is one of the inventors of that sport. It's absolutely amazing to watch.
Gonna go see this tonight! Can't wait! :-)
Ok, just got back from it and I'm frustrated!
I loved the movie - loved how they brought back "an old school James Bond".
But guess what? I was the only one out of the 5 of us who really liked it!?! I'm shocked!
Two of them who really didn't like it, wanted a repeat of the past 3-4 Bond flicks. Give them some fancy action scenes, a witty line after dispatching the bad guy, show a pretty 2-dimensional Bond girl (or two).
To each their own, I guess. Me? It's definitely my fav Bond flick in more than a dozen years. Might be my all time fav in fact.
The thing about the "campy James Bond" is that it's overly formulaic and tired. Been done to death. And guess what? They've been out-camped by Austin Powers. So instead of trying to continue on that route, they went back to more of the original concept of Bond. And I think that's a great idea, IMHO.
Anyway, YMMV, I suppose...

It's an excellent film and despite my reservations about a blond Bond, Daniel Craig kicked serious a$$! That foot chase was AMAZING, best I have seen for a long time, if not ever. Just goes to show that you don't need cars, SUVs or helicopters and lots of fireballs to make an awesome movie chase scene...
I do agree with another statement: that Ronin car chase was one of the best in movies...
I also tend to agree with the comment about it being a bit sappy but I think it being the initial story of the Bond serial, it sets the tone for how and why Bond became Bond (his womanizing, his seemingly uncaring attitude, his "cool"). I think he's certainly a more realistic spy than we've seen in other recent Bond movies: I liked it that he wasn't afraid to get his hands dirty... As much as I liked Pierce Brosnan as the most recent Bond incarnation, Daniel Craig pulled off the impossible: he made me believe he's the best Bond yet...
Finally, I liked the first Bond girl in the movie better than Eva Green - she was beyond hot! Who is she?

I agree. I was sad to see her meet such an early demise. On the other hand, it was *******ing that the "main squeeze" wasn't a perfect woman. There's something to be said for that.... (although probably nothing good by the men watching it :)).

Super! Very well done. Seemed like a thinking person's Bond movie. The opening chase scene was very intense. Things seemed to really come at the audience in rapid fire, yet pauses through out for breath catching, too. Craig did an excellent job of playing Bond.
