so we don't have a new thread with every issue, here's a running thread.

my new dancebeat came yesterday and there was finally some reportage on pro rhythm at Miami (USBC) but so far nothing yet on the US mambo championships, and nothing on RS rhythm.

sad.

but on a better note, there's a nice interview with Max and Yulia, touching on their history together, what it's been like for them since coming to the US, their feelings about competing for America, their results differential (overseas versus domestically, etc.)

they come off extremely sincere and gracious in the piece, and there are some cute candid shots.

Hope mine is in the mailbox. Although I wouldn't have minded having it for the train ride home....

I guess the US mambo championship is simply not going to get covered in Dancebeat, or the RS rhythm at Miami.

in the new Dancebeat, we have a review by former latin competitor Jose Decamps of the pro rhythm competition at Vegas in December. Jose will be dancing rhythm professionally soon, so his little manifesto about "authentic rhythm style" is an interesting hint at what's to come, perhaps.

Again? Does it say who his partner will be?

I was delighted wth Jose's article and simply cannot wait to see hm back on the floor. I have been longing for this as I feel he is by far the best rhythym dancer this country has.

Jose danced Rhythm for years before switching to Latin. One year he placed second at USBC and I'm pretty sure Jose and Jamie beat Bob and Julia that year in Mambo.

Great video of her/them in there, too. I see one of rythmic rentals dresses in one segment. She sure can stir the pot, eh? Got dizzy just looking at that!

I have a GoodLife TV recording of Jose Decamps dancing at US Open Professional Rising Star Latin Championships in 1999. He was dancing with Viktoriya Drubeskaya. They placed 2nd. Coach was Louis Van Amstel. Don't know how this relates to Jose's rhythm dancing, timeline wise.

Interesting editorial in the new Dance Beat that recaps the various World ProAm competitions without saying which one should keep the title, but points out the pros and cons and legitimacy of each. I recommend it for what is being said between the lines.

That is correct. He also won the World Mambo two years in a row with Vika. Then there was a brief partnership with another Russian girl whose name I cannot remember (apoligies), blonde, very thin, that was not so successful ( he lost the World Mambo to Ana Llorente and Eddie Ares) before Jose switched to Latin and competed very successfully with Cheryl Burke, right up until she went off to do Dancing with the Stars. And so now he is back in Rhythm and I think he and Joanna should be very exciting indeed. Joanna and Jose, Emanuel and Julia, Tony and Elena, suddenly Rhythm looks like a very interesting event. I personally cannot wait!!!

This may be a little difficult to achieve, but I'm totally desperate to find a copy of the interview with Victor Da Silva and Hanna Karttunen from Millennium Dancesport that is said to be featured in the July 15th edition of Dancebeat.

Living in England, I have no idea if I'd even be able to get a subscription over here, so I was wondering if any of you lovely people had the goods and would be able to either scan or photograph the page for me?

I would be so grateful if anybody can actually do this.

It's a long shot, but hey . . . worth a go!

I saw a correction in a recent issue, so I guess you either contacted them or someone else did?

Becca, they do take overseas subscriptions, in case you are interested. If no one else comes through with a copy of the Hanna & Victor article for you, perhaps you could contact Dance Beat and see if they'll send you just that one copy.

Just got edition 0707 today.

A few comments, based on an initial scan:

According to page 2, the North American Championships will be on CN8, the Comcast Network. (Someone had asked this on the North American Championships thread...maybe I should post this there.)

Page 8--Full page ad. "Look who just joined the Arthur Murray team...Emmitt Smith!" It has a photo of Emmitt and Pat Smith, and promises an Emmitt Smith story on "How dancing changed my life" on the AM website after July 26th.

Pages 24-25--"The United States DanceSport Championships and Why We Care," a regular feature. I didn't know that Michelle Officer and Kostadin Bidjourov are competing together in Smooth.

Page 30--Reports on rumors and a supermarket tabloid report--which was then commented on by "Advocate Magazine"--that "gay former N' Syncer Lance Bass" is being considered for the next season of DWTS and that he might be paired with a male dancer. Brian Fortuna and Alec Mazo are mentioned as possibilities. (I personally do not think this will happen, but thought it was worth mentioning.) (Side commentary: while I think same-sex dancing should be part of the competition scene, I feel uncomfortable with the implication that one's actual sexual orientation needs to be reflected in one's choice of dance partner.)

Page 38--Full page ad for the Rising Star Newcomers Ball, run by Eddie Ares and Nancy Senner. It mentions that it is part of 2 comps in 1, and says to see the reverse for the other comp. The comp advertised on the other side, however, is The Windy City Open, run by different organizers, on different dates, in a different city. I think "Dancebeat" owes Eddie Ares and Nancy Senner an ad.

Nik--You were mentioned on at least pages 6 (Millenium), 18/20 (Yankee, latin), and again on 20 (Yankee, standard).

Here's the bit from Millenium: "Here we have a strong passionate girl (especially in her Paso) and a boy who definitely knows his center and how to partner well. I was particularly impressed with the strength this couple showed in their basic figures while juxtaposing exciting tricks." Yay you two!

ChaChaMama

P.S. I would like to note that although the comp website spells it "Millennium," which is also the spelling I prefer, "Dancebeat" preferred "Millenium" in the headline, though it switched to the two N version in the body of the article. Maybe they save all their spelling energy for trying to get the competitors' names spelled correctly! ;)

ChaChaMama, did you by any chance come across the interview with Victor and Hanna from the Millennium in this issue?

I emailed Dancebeat to ask them if this was definitely the issue it was to be featured in, but all they could tell me was that it would appear in one 'sometime this year'. I just want to be sure before I buy.

I'd be very appreciative if you could let me know about that. Thanks!

Becca, I see a color photo of them on the cover (inside the O of "WOW"), a black and white photo of them on page 4, and a brief discussion of how great they were in the Millennium write-up, but no interview.

Here's what was written:
"This year's show was better than ever. Michael Malitowski and Joanna Leunis were terrific as always, Mirko Gozzoli & Alessia Betti impressed the audience with their skills but Hanna Karttunan & Victor DaSilva for me stole the show. They gave the best performance ever. Hanna & Victor were what I call faultless and I hardly ever use the word." --Didio Barrera

All the hints on the American Smooth thread about a couple on the East Coast that was going to snow everyone... I have always assumed these hints referred to Michelle Officer and Kostadin Bidjourov, and that's why I wondered why everyone was saying this was a big secret when they are not particularly keeping it secret. They are practicing openly, coaching openly. I am very excited to see them dance. To me Michelle Officer is a magical dancer of exceptional quality and I think she and Kostadin should be an interesting combination.

One other comment in the new DanceBeat. In a review of the Rhythm division at Yankee Classic(I am doing this from memory as my issue is at home), besiedes praising Jose and Joanna to the skies, the reviewer - I think it was Didio - says that Tony Dovolani and Elena Grinenko have confirmed that they will be defending their title at USDSC. There is no way I am missing being in the ballroom that night.

Wow - very exciting about Michelle Officer and Kostadin Bidjourov! I can't wait to see them, especially Michelle. I've only seen clips of her dancing on TV, and I agree - she's exquisite - gorgeous dancer.

Is Carrie Babcock still dancing/competing?

I got the latest issue of dancebeat a few days ago. Interesting what when they wrote about Vol. State competition (Nashville, end of July). They commented about increase in bronze pro-am entries and whoever wrote that article said that it is nice to see such increase in pro-am, which is the backbone of american dancesport.
