Hi, I’m a salsa dancer from Ukraine. Started to learn on2 (Eddie Torres on2 style) maybe 2-3 months ago. Till that time danced only on 1, but used many NY style smooth elements and combinations. Now have a serious problem with girls styling on CBL or Open Break figures (mostly on CBL).
I understand most of ladies styling in LA salsa because you mark the first beat of music with some dynamic styling. But when transferring them on2 it lacks something, so I tried to find/made absolutely new CBL styling for women. And the only thing I found was: stretching on 1 by doing back rock instead of small step forward (some time it’s called rock and pop – done in counts “and”+”one”); and two cross over steps on 1 and 2 by going forward on cross body. That’s it! My partner and I know lot’s of CBL styling on1 but it looks unnatural if it’s done in counts 5,6 dancing NY. Maybe I don’t understand something and lady can use the same steps dancing on2, I’m confused… Any help will be useful. Thank you!

The lady can do many of the styling moves on 6,7,8 and even extend it to 1 for On2Mambo.
For example: For Rollups On1 she would roll up her body before a CBL on 1,2,3 but On2 she would roll up on 6,7,8 and walk forward with her right on 1 then her left on 2 or she could extend the time for the body roll to 6,7,8,1 and walk forward with her left on 2 if she does it correctly. She'd have more time.
There are about a million other things but much of the styling could be done on 6,7,8.
Also The footing is different in On1 and On2 ET style.
It's hard to explain in writing but with On1 the legs are alway's coming back together and you are always stepping on this imaginary line in the middle 123, 567 but in On2 Mambo you are stepping over that line and your legs are more a part. That's what makes it look different than On1. Also there is more time to do spins with On2 Mambo.
I have taken my own videos at at few congresses which help and
I'm still studying them but I may also get one of these styling videos too.
It's good to see partnerwork where the lady gets to style while she's moving with her partner. I haven't previewed any of these videos yet but you might want to check one or two out for yourself. It was on a NY salsa site.

10Q, "n On2 Mambo you are stepping over that line and your legs are more a part" - that makes things more clear... really :)
I tried to concentrate on that and naturally I’m always passing the middle in CBL. I mean my legs are apart instead of being together.
I have one Seaon's beginners partnering video, really great... but of course no styling hints in it, I’ll try to find his styling DVD’s somehow.
Thank you

The Jami Josephson DvDs might help, they each contain a whole bunch of shines danced on1 and 2.

I'm glad that helps about the legs being apart.
It was a help to me too when my teacher was telling me
about the different between On1 and On2.
