And I don't mean fowls, although it could apply to that....

Who has messed up so far getting ready for tomorrow (Thanksgiving Day in the USA)?

So far I've managed to:

buy walnuts rather than pecans for the chocolate-rum-pecan pie -- but I've gone ahead and made it with the walnuts 'cause it sounded good anyway
put way too much wasabi in the purreed cauliflower -- I like it, but it's really hot by any normal person's standards

send the cauliflower wasabi to me...love food that makes my nose run...as for snafus, see thanksgiving thread...too lazy to re-type...bottom line...need a bigger freaking oven

Told my housemates they could eat a few homemade marshmallows since I don't need all of them for the candied yams - and now I have to make another batch! Homemade marshmallows are a pain... (but so totally worth it!)

Last year my snafu was also marshmallow related - they broke the ****l whisk on my mixer into two pieces!

It's odd typing "whisk" on DF and not meaning in waltz...

I just laze around and get invited to the absolutely most scrumptious Thanksgiving dinner at my friend's place. Yeeha :-) My snafu is usually what to get her for a gift. The first time she invited me, I brought a couple of bottles of some nice wine. Discovered her husband was not comfortable serving alcohol in his house, for religious reasons.
Last year I got a lovely plant, which died immediately!!
This year, it's a bottle of balsamic vinegar. Keeping my fingers crossed the quality will be OK.

Homemade marshmallows are so fabulous! They totally redefined my opinion of marshmallows.

This:

http://www.oprah.com/foodhome/food/recipes/food_200411_yams.jhtml

is my absolute favorite thanksgiving recipe - it was definitely a hit last year.

If you're going to make the marshmallows, though, be sure to have a stand mixer or a really heavy duty hand mixer! My stand mixer makes short work of them, but my hand mixer narrowly escaped a sticky, marshmallowy death.

And, in the recipe, where it says beat five minutes longer? Replace that with, beat until they eat the world bwa ha ha ha ha!!!!:twisted::twisted:

Hahhahahaha Eric.

I just put the apple crisp into the oven. Didn't have white sugar so used evaporated cane juice (i.e., unrefined sugar but not actually as dark and sticky as brown sugar) instead. We'll have to see how that goes. I only made this because I had three pounds of apples in the bottom of the fridge and they needed to get used up.

Eric, if you weren't on the East Coast I'd say come over for dinner tomorrow for some real food!

Thanks, but the turkey/food is my least favorite part of the holiday. I like taking the day to sit and reflect on the good things in my life. The emphasis often placed on food, to me, just gets in the way. Somewhat the same way with New Year's Eve/Day -- they are deeply introspective personal days for me and all the outside stuff is kinda pushed aside to make room for that.

I totally forgot to buy stuffing. So I'm having a turkey stuffed with sliced apples. :)

We are definitely two peas in a pod, Nielsie. Thanksgiving & New Years are historically two of my favorite days of the year to be by myself, today included. I receive invites to feast, but -- foodie tho I am -- an entire day devoted to cooking/eating/cleaning up mostly bores me... I can take two hours of that type of thing, max, and then I wanna get outa there. Which one can't do on a holiday because the hostess would be incredibly offended. :)

Not having to cook or clean for a holiday is incredibly liberating!

This year my kids are at their dad's til Sunday, so I'm puttering about, doing massive laundry & cleaning in the midst of yoga, dance practice, and some sex-&-the-city episodes... and spending time just being quiet. yum.

Tonight having dessert & espresso w/ Sambuca with a dear old friend's family will completely satisfy the social side of the day.

Puurrrrrrrfect!

<although, Laura's feast of turkey & wasabi cauliflower, and fireflight's homemade marshies sound MIGHTY tempting!>
