View Full Version : for some reason, are certains posts UNeditable?

I have a post that I want to edit, but there is no option for me to do so. However, every other time I want to edit, I can always see an edit option. Are there certain threads or categories here that, for whatever reason, we are unable to edit?
(I have asked the moderators at DF about this twice, but for some reason they have not responded to my query.)
Thanks!

I have never been asked...to my knowlege you can edit any of your own posts...I am not at all certain why there would be a problem...the only exception that I am uncertain of is whether or not there is a time limit, but even if there is it is a very long one before you would bwe unable to do so

Maybe you can't edit in a locked thread?

editability goes away after a certain timeframe, no?

I tried editing the post a few days after I'd submitted it. It's now been a week since I posted. If any of the moderators are here and want to assist me, please send me a message and I'll let you know which post I'm talking about.
Thanks!

That's exactly the case alemana. I'm not sure exactly what the time frame is, but posts only remain editable for a certain span of time.
While this can be a nuicance at times, hopefully it also encourages people not to post in a stream of consciousness type manner as well, figuring they can just change things later if they feel like it... ;)

Not sure why, but a 24-hour time frame is what's popping into my brain. BRB after I check.

Yeah. It looks like 24 hours may be the right number. My posts from yesterday morning are already uneditable.
IIRC, that time limit was instituted after we had a couple DFers get ... hot under the collar ... and decide to edit and/or delete all their posts, long (think weeks or months) after the fact. It was ugly. And a few threads became unreadable, just because (IMHO) folks got upset and decided to take all their marbles and go home.
So. Eh. 24 hours may be a bit short. I don't know. But unlimited doesn't work all that well, either, IMO. :?

Yeah. It's been a while, but the cobwebs in our collective brain seem to have converged.

As Jenn points out the ability to edit past posts also proved unfair to others who had posted in response to posts that were later edited.

In another forum I participate in, they allow editing and deleting of posts for some time after posting. One poster makes it a practice to delete everything he posts after a couple of days. It makes hash of every thread he participates in.

(I have asked the moderators at DF about this twice, but for some reason they have not responded to my query.)
What would be very helpful is if members would remember that the moderators are all volunteers and have lives outside of DF. These lives also include but are not limited to... problems accessing the internet, dance classess and or socials (!!!) and travelling with no computer access unless travelling with a laptop (or have packed their PC into their suitcases, in which case, they still get access the computer for obvious reasons ;))
Some moderators also get a lot of PMs. Therefore, if members send a PM to a moderator(s) and have not had a response, send a POLITE reminder asking if they saw your original PM.

On a related note, what is the best way to ask a question of or make a request to the moderators?
Should one send a PM with the same question/request to each moderator? If so, is there a list of them all somewhere?
Is there a better way to get a message in front of all moderators' eyes simultaneously?
Or should one send a PM to just one moderator and then try another moderator if one doesn't get a response from the first?
Should the answers to these questions be posted in a sticky thread somewhere, or perhaps in an FAQ? Or are they already there, meaning I've overlooked them?
(BTW, mods, I'm asking mostly on behalf of other users, because as several of you know, I have alternative contact methods available.)

IMO, speaking as one mod....if it is a question about a particular forum, you should scroll down to the bottom of that forum and see who the moderators are and pm them(besides the admins they are the only mods with the ability to modify anything on those threads, though any mod can advise you)....if you have never heard of those people, then you should probably do a pm that includes as many mods as you know and the admins....like all other requests regarding ways to operate more smoothly and efficiently, this one will likely be on hold for a while
