Who's going? how big was it last year?

Last year Open Am Standard (I'm guessing that's what you want to know about) was only 2 couples. The year before it was 5 couples. We are considering dancing there this year.

that sounds tiny..

Yes, it's much bigger for the Pros than for the Ams. It used to get a full final all the time. But the last few years have been much skimpier.

that's too bad. Don't really want to go without a semi :(

Well unless you bring the semi with you, it probably won't be there. I would be shocked if we get more than 3 or 4 local couples. 2 years ago 3 of the 5 couples were from out of town though, so I guess there's hope.

I probably will go. Is the gala event for New Years Eve really nice? or is it better to go downtown for fireworks?

The gala is very nice and Max and Yulia are the featured performers this year!

Saturday night, Session 4 ($50 admission - but this is also when they have Amateur Standard) includes a Professional Exhibition Showcase. I wonder if Max & Yulia are doing the showcase.

The $150 ticket is VERY comparable in price to most hotel ballroom NYE events in DC where there is no world class entertainment like there is at Yuletide. It also includes dinner. And yes, I hear MAx And Yulia are pretty darn pricey;)

And if my kids want to compete then I'd have three reasons to go to Virginia for the holidays.

Looking at the order form, it seems like Yuletide has special gala tickets for college students that include just the entertainment and not the dinner. The price is only $50. So if you are a college student, that's an option.

I doubt they'll do both. Usually the couple doing the NYE show at Yuletide doesn't compete in the comp - that's been my experience so far...

I think it would be a conflict of interest for an event director to allow a couple to compete and then pay them to do a show the same weekend.

I was thinking that it might be a Showcase Exhibition...but you're right, its probably a Showcase Exhibition competition and they won't do it.

We'll be competing Friday and Saturday nights, so at the very least those two nights. We're thinking about getting the hotel for a little bit longer to stay through new years in dc

You can probably crash with me one of the days... (if you guys are driving, and are not alergic to dogs)

How was this event last year? Was it as tiny as expected? Were the workshops well attended?

I don't recall the number of entries, but it was much higher than they had expected and it threw-off the schedule quite a bit. By the last day, they were just anouncing the top 3 places in scholarships the same way as in the single dance entries. Hopefully they will be better prepared this year.
The NYE Gala was well worth the cost and very well attended.

Would you have to be part of a couple to enjoy the NYE part?

I went with a group of friends, which I guess is always better for NYE, but there were definitely some singles there for the social dancing.
