Hi!
I might be going to machester for a few weeks this christmas, and wonder if anyone can tell me anything about the salsascene in Manchester?
I prefer cuban salsa, but..any salsa will do, and I love bachata, reggaeton, merengue, and other latin dances. Hope to get some reccomendations about clubs, or parties.
Will apreciate any info

The copa is open ( I think every week nite ) right in the heart easy to get to but parking is a problem. Nice mixed crowd, dont care for their musical choices , but some fairly decent dancers, mixed age group. There are a couple more but do not know about them .

Don't know the Manchester scene, but take a look at these organisers/teachers - www . salsology.com - I believe they are more x-body than Cuban, but may be able to point you in the right direction.

Have heard that their events are very good and very friendly. I saw (rather than took part in) part of a class two of the organisers/teachers - Emma and Mushi - were doing and everyone seemed to be having a really good time and the teaching was also very good.

Probably not your scene, but there is a fairly hardcore night at the Longfield suite, Prestwich on the 30th December. Almost completely cross-body style, with a strong on2 representation and lots of mambo, guajira, etc.

I'm here for work this week and getting ready to head to Copacabana (Dale St.) tonight. :)

The biggest nights (relatively) for the copa that I know of are Wednesday and Friday. Don't know about the weekend as I'm usually gone by Saturday morning. You'll find a mix of cuban and crossbody people and they play a mix of all the dances. Another option is La Tasca restaurant on Deansgate downtown. On tuesday, there are cuban style lessons with about an hour or so free dancing after the lessons. Lorraine and Les, (or Wes, blast I can never remember his name) teach the lessons on Tuesday and can offer you some more info on cuban related dancing in Manchester. There is also a cuban lesson on Wednesday nights at the Copa. Walking into La Tasca yesterday I saw a sign that they are having salsa nights Thursday-Saturday. But that's new as of this week, so I don't know how many are aware of it yet. I think there's also some salsa goings on over near Chester. I'll check with my local resource for more info on Manchester salsa.

I really arpeciate all info and recommendations. I agree, that the hardcore night, might not be for me, also because I will be with non-salseros and then i believe a cuban, or more mixed scene might be more relaxing for my friends. I'm an addict myself..and I would love for my friends to enjoy as well, and maybe if the atmpsphere is good, they might get addicted too...lol..I love to share my passion for latin dancing.

In that case, I'd recommend the copacabana. The restaurant and dance floor are all in the same area so you can sit at a regular table with your friends for a drink or snack and it's just a short stroll to the dance floor. There is usually a wide range of experiences there as well. And like I mentioned, they will play everything: bachata, merengue, salsa and a few reggaeton thrown in.

By the way, ya'll over here just have to stop with the salsa remixes of R&B and Rap tunes. I just wasn't feeling the love when I heard the salsa version of 50 cent's "In da club" :)

Lorraine and Les, (or Wes, blast I can never remember his name)

Every tried associating his name with someone famous Witchphd? Eg. If his name is Les, and he is something of a comedian, you could associate him the late Les Dawson who had a very flexible face, like some circus artists have fleixible bodies

or...

If he is tall, dark and handsome, you could associate him with Wesley Snipes ;)

No, I never thought very highly of the association trick. I've always considered that two things that I'd never remember. My brain is awful for purely objective information. I'll remember faces after one try, but names usually require two weeks. Yes, it does sound sad doesn't it?
