View Full Version : Nashville Starz -- who is going?
SlowDancer

For various and sundry reasons, I haven't competed in nearly 6 years but I've decided to come out of "retirement" at Nashville Starz the weekend of Jan. 19-2I. Any other DFers going?
:D

I'd like to go, if I can get off of my St. Louis assignment by then. Will have to talk the DW into it. We might be able to get a good group from our studio. Nashville is only a two-hour drive for us.

We won't have much time to practice but the comp is like 10 minutes from my house so I'm pretty sure we'll be there. :)

Pro mentioned Tuesday in our lesson that he wanted me to do this comp. I all but laughed at him. Reasons:
1) I have never competed before.
2) It is 6 weeks away.
3) We haven't begun to prepare.
4) I will be gone for 3 of those weeks on Christmas break.
5) Pro doesn't want to put me in Newcomer even though I've never competed because I'm "really not at that level."
6) Deciding whether to do Latin or Rhythm would give me a headache.
Can I play the smack-a-pro game now?

Honestly, I don't care who whacks him or with what. Just somebody needs to whack some sense into the boy. Why would he even suggest a comp that's this close, given the circumstances?

Sorry, the DF Competition Committee has ruled that none of the above are valid reasons not to compete! Besides, it will be my first ballroom comp in a long time, and it would be so much fun to meet you and other DFers there.
Although I just got a call from my realtor earlier this afternoon, and we FINALLY have an offer on our house :o and with my luck, I'll probably end up moving that weekend and will have to delay my "comeback" yet again.
But if we sell our house, there will be more money to go to dance competitions with...

David is taking such care of the competition... the hotel is Southern-themed, there will be a fiddler playing during the competition - and I'm sure he has some other surprises up his sleeve...
Not sure who all will be going, but will try to provide reports as the events unfold: we'll be there. I'm looking forward to going - only three weeks left to go!

I would let you stay at my house, but I live in a three-bedroom house with four people and three dogs  But the comp hotel is in Metro Center in downtown Nashville so if you do a search on Google for "metro center nashville hotels" (or motels), you will get several results.

I know there's a Comfort Inn that my parents used to stay in at the Demonbreun roundabout near Music Row. It's fairly close to the comp, but my parents said it's not the nicest of places, so you might be taking your chances with that one...

We are flying in on Sunday morning. Good thing for us the Pro Smooth is on Sunday evening, since we have a studio showcase on Saturday! We are sticking around the next day and coming back to Boston on Monday night.
The Pro Smooth has a semi final, and the competition itself has over 4500 entries... not too shabby at all for the first year of a competiton. Kudos to David for pulling it all together.

I am so disappointed that I won't be there this weekend...I started this thread when I was planning to make my pro-am "comeback" there but so many things have happened since then. Mainly I've gotten a huge promotion at work, which is both nice (the money) and terrible (not much time for dancing or hanging out at DF). This is the first time I've posted in weeks and weeks...I just hope things settle down a little for me, and soon. I go to work very early and come home late every day and haven't taken a real lunch hour in weeks. I was named acting/imterim head of my department but I'm in the running for keeping the position on a permanent basis. I don't know whether to really try to keep the job or not...I sorta liked it better when I had a life, ya know?
I hope everyone dances wonderfully this weekend. I'll just have to catch you at another comp...my teacher wants us to go to St. Louis in March but I don't think I'll really be able to do anything until maybe May-ish.
Drat.
We'll miss seeing you there - and congratulations . . . you must be thought of highly by your team!

Yes, it is. I have to have the "day job" to support my dancing (and other habits, like eating, for example), but when I have the money it seems that I don't have the time. If I were fifteen years younger, I could burn the candle at both ends but alas, I'm not...:headwall:
Oh well, this too shall pass.

Thanks for asking - I'm on my way home. 2 styles today and an important matter is taking me away.
I have so many good things to say about this comp, but that'll have to wait from me until later.
The hotel is the Millenium Maxwell House Hotel - the coffee Maxwell House took it's name from this hotel
There has been a lot of live music in the hotel - not only is there a live band in the ballroom, but the bar has had a variety of popular music (rock, country, Stevie Ray Vaughn - sounding), and the piano in the lobby has been occupied by talented pianists, even four hands at once.

Yea! Got to meet musicchica and ChelD
Glad to hear that you guys are having a great time in Nashville... I will be there tomorrow for dancing with the stars... Won't be able to make it to the comp... If you guys see Eddie Ares around, tell him that Liz says Hi... We will be dancing together for the first time next week...Reb, I will be sure to let you know all about the Magnolia...Tell Borbala I said hi and good luck to you both...
I'm home already and sent a note to Borbala about Eddie - don't know if she'll get it in time if she's in the ballroom already. Eddie was looking dapper yesterday.
Mark Brock, the MC, was hilarious. As Mark introduced the judges for their shift changes, he would give a little 'story' here and there about a judge which would crack up the audience.
In the evening, with the C&W theme, the judges were appropriately dressed in their finest C&W duds and one of the judges looked suspiciously like Elvis.
I don't have my book in front of me right now, but it seemed that a lot of the pro/am events were well attended with quarter and semi finals. Pro events are tonight and Sunday evening with Smooth and Rhythm having semifinals and Latin and Standard straight finals.
For all the talented Amateurs in all four styles who missed this comp this year, keep in mind when planning next year:

Hey everybody! Just got back from the evening session and have to say that Kat looked GREAT!!! I love that dress, girl...the color's awesome!
Jesse and Jackie competed in Pro Rhythm along with Felipe and Carolina and obviously Jeremy and Anna (and a whole lot of other people I didn't know, LOL). Results forthcoming.
Unfortunately it's freezing outside and raining on top of it, and in my mad dash from my car to my apartment I neglected to grab my program, and there's no way in heck I'm going back out to get it tonight, so y'all will just have to wait for results, LOL!

Great evening at this comp.. I did watch Kat & her partner dance, they both looked awesome.
Jackie & Jessie were on FIRE.. I don't know what they've been doing in their absence from comps but it's working. They even beat Felipe & Carolina in a few dances. Incomplete results -
Pro Rhythm
1st - Felipe & Carolina
2nd - Jackie & Jessie
3rd - Jeremy & Anna
4th or 5th - Mark & Rhonda Becker
& two other couples
There was lots of energy in the ballroom, everything was set up very nicely. Louis Van Amstel even popped in for a visit, got to chat with him for a few. Not too shabby for the comp's very first year!

Thoughts:
LOVED the couple that won Pro Standard, they were awesome!
Jesse & Jackie were really strong, they impressed me a lot. I kinda felt bad for them, though--they had a tough room! Most of the people there last night were home-crowd and rooting for Jeremy and Anna. The atmosphere in the room was so tense during that one it was unreal...everybody knew there were only 3 couples in the running for the top spot, and we weren't quite sure how it was going to end up. Oh, and Carolina's cut her hair short into a chin-length bob and has lightened the color considerably from the last time I saw her. It's really cute!
Not sure if anybody really cares about the showdance, but if you want some comments about it, just ask!
As I said last night, Alex and Kat looked GREAT! Have you lightened your hair even more than in your avatar? It looked a little blonder--I liked it! Sorry I didn't get to introduce myself Kat, I was kinda stuck in the back and couldn't move around very much to get out to say hi. Here again, I kinda felt bad for the other couples on the floor--Balazc and Csilla are American Ballroom people, so everybody was pretty much rooting for them. They weren't too happy when they came in 3rd of 3.
Pro Smooth was incredible! Tibor and Larina, y'all were fantastic! And Larinda, I LOVE that dress. I tried to come up and say hi, went looking for you as soon as the comp ended, but you 2 must have been the first ones out the door because I couldn't find you. Sorry! I took SO many pictures...a whole roll and a half just from the semifinal! Tomas and J.T. were incredible too. Actually was impressed with all of the Pro Smooth attendees at this comp. With Ben & Shalene retired now, it's really opened up the field for new faces to come in, it was really exciting seeing how the placements were going to end up.
I was surprised there weren't many entries in Pro Latin, and no one I'd ever heard of. Interestingly, the costumes for Latin seemed to be a bit more outrageous than in Rhythm this time! I liked the couple that won, but apparently the judges liked them more than I did, because I would have put Dmitry & Svetlana in the top spot myself. A great show, though.
Overall, this was just an incredible comp. Kudos to David Hamilton! He really outdid himself on this one--everybody needs to come next year! And I got to see a whole bunch of great dancing that I wouldn't have gotten to see if I'd gone to DWTS tonight!
Pictures forthcoming...

I think this is a latin couple who haven't competed for a year or so at any comp I've seen- she used to be very blonde and he had dark hair, but that's not a very good description if they have changed their look - I remember a gorgeous blue dress she had at Virginia State a few years ago - and they always did good show dances. Svetlana whose husband died is dancing w/ Cristian Caligieri (sp?) now, I think.

So, did you wear a wig?!?
LOL No, amazingly I was without wig this time, au natural (well, if you don't count the 6 gallons of hairspray). Jeremy had like 70 pro-am entries that day so we just didn't have time to do the whole wig thing.
Congratulations Paige!
Congratulations Lawrence Mitchell, Jim Clark, David Caufield, and Dave Scholz!!

The competition was great, David did an awesome job. Even his family were there working, Mom and Dad are some of my favorite people I see whenever I go to Nashville and I was thrilled to see them and hear them cheering.
Even though the hotel is lovely hopefully this is not the home for the competiton as the room seems a bit small and I am sure was overfull on Saturday night. I believe David had said he is looking at other venues for the future.
The Smooth was a great field. There were several couples in the semi that I am sure were hoping to make the final and probably could have easily with just a switch of a mark or two. David was incredibly generous with the judging... every single judge was up and working for the pro events, and Dan Rutherford was a last minute stand-in for Olga Foraponova who could not make it.
Thanks Musicchica, I love the dress too! And we were out of the ballroom quick because we forgot to bring money to pay for our video and did not want to keep Chel waiting... we came back though but the ballroom had pretty much emptied out by then. Sorry to have missed you.

You did a great job posting the results! I'm sure that took some hard work to type everything down. I appreciate seeing some familiar names. What fun! ;)

Yes, but Larinda & Tibor didn't dance until Sunday and I wasn't there on that day. And unfortunately they don't list DF usernames next to people's real names (although they should!!) so if I had read a DFers real-life name, I wouldn't have known it.

Suggestion for you, Roadrunner. Before your next competition, put a message up here that you're going and ask who else will be there. Then, you can probably coordinate a time/place to meet. It's been done for Ohio Star and I know SPratt is working on something similar for St. Louis.

IJ - Slowdancer asked who was all going in the very first post, and Roadrunnder did respond as well as a lot of others. I'm not sure where the confusion lied after that though as to why a second question was asked from Roadrunner about who is all going in the same thread, because to me that is what Slowdancer was asking in the first post, and that's part of the reason why we have 12 pages now lol. But yes it does help to see who is all going though, because one it gives you someone to talk to and hang out with etc., and two it's always nice meeting new people. Plus as I said in my thread under the St. Louis Star Ball, if I can't compete, I will still be there to help, and I'll have extra things like makeup with me as well if they had forgotten theirs at home.;)

Well, I didn't read the thread as carefully as SP did. But to provide additional advice to our friend Roadrunner (or anyone else who is interested in meeting DFers at an event), the way it worked for us at Purdue is that we communicated via PM ways to find/recognize each other, so as to avoid making it necessary for anyone to communicate too much identifying information in the public forum. So, Roadrunner, next time you'll be at an event and learn that other DFers will be there as well, feel free to send a few PMs out to set up the get-togethers.
The next event LW and I will be at is the University of Michigan comp. AFAIK, the only other DFers there will be CaityRosey and Wyllo, who we've already met and should therefore be easy to find and RainerNg, who because he's in charge of the event should be easy to find! So for that event, I've not sent out any PMs.
Anyway, I'm sorry you were disappointed by being unable to meet anyone at the last comp, Roadrunner, and I wish you better luck with that in the future! Do you know yet where you will compete next?

Lol... yeah that's what those going to the St. Louis Star Ball are doing right now. We'll probably talk more once the date gets closer. I'm still not sure if I can even attend. Amateur Rhythm from Nashville? Hmm...Roberto Schipp and Leigh Wieland? Dalibor and Daniela Vavra? Harlan and Peggy Newton? Corey Branum and Valerie Hathcock? Those are the names that came up on a quick scan of my program. Any of them sound familiar?
This would be much easier if Amateur events were better labeled in my program...

They signed up after the books were printed, so they weren't listed.
If I remember correctly, they are of Czech heritage - I think that eliminates the name Harlan!
'Vavra' is a Czech name . . . could be. The good thing is that if we figure it out - I can say hi to them by name the next time I see them instead of being stupid!

oh...come to chicago
Sounds like a plan. I lived in the western suburbs many years ago and Chicago is still one of my top favorite U.S. cities. My pro and I competed at the (is it Crystal?) Ball there about six years ago and had a great time. Also, my DH and I still have our house in Houston so if I went there, I would have a free place to stay. I also lived in St. Louis and love that city...and have competed at the St. Louis Star Ball in past years, too. Just don't know what my crazy job will allow me to do in the next few months...I probably just need to just commit to something and start getting ready.

Hmm, the only Czech-like names I can think of at ABC are Balazc and Csilla Kocsi, but I'm pretty sure they only do Standard...

You're right they do standard. Balazc and Csilla Kocsi are Hungarian, good friends of ours and nice people.
