Personally I'm a bit disappointed since all the dancers I have looked forward to meet teaches on-2 advanced classes and nothing on-1 and nothing in the lower classes.
Since we have no on-2 culture at all where I live - no school teaches it - it is very hard for us to join. And I get so dissapointed since I have looked forward to go for Tito & Tamara, Griselle Ponce & Hacha & Machete.
Now I'm almost planing to stay home...that means if they don't change the schedule.
Is this usual?
Great teachers = only advanced classes
Great teachers = only on-2 classes
(I know Luis Vazquez teaches on -1 but since I've already taken classes for him I didn't look forward to meet him in the same way. Of course I go for himonce more ;))

I'll be there too -- hope I'll catch you for a dance .

You mean apart from all the workshops?
This is my first time in Gothenburg too but I'm not sure if I'll have a chance to see the town. Might take time off workshops at some point and have a wander though. Sounds like a nice place .

I will surley be there for the nights ;)
But since me and my daughter probably will be involved in some selling activities at the congress we havn't registred yet. Don't know how much time we will have for dancing. And since my herniated disc still is causing me trouble I will be very careful so I can dance all night
But I can meet you all who goes there. And since I'm a native one I might help you to find other things to do. (I live 60 km north of town).
Love to meet you all :)
Take a look at www.gothenburg.com . You could buy a passport for a lot of activties. I also know that the double bedrooms are finished at the hotel. Here is a cheap hotel very close to the congress http://www.cityhotelgbg.se/

The weather could be like anything at this time of the year. It could be spring - 10 -15 degrees celsius. It could also be around 0 - chilly damp rainy and perhaps snow. If it comes snow - it will probbaly not stay for more than a few hours ;). Last year it was raining all he time.
I guess you should bring something to stop the rain to get inside yor sweather and a warm pullover. And shoes made for wet.
I get back later with some attractions worth visiting. The salsacongress is very very central - most you want to see is within 5 minutes walk.

Here is a good collection of things to do in Gothenurg: http://www.goteborg.com/templates/Page.aspx?id=993
The Art Musem (300 meter from the congress)
http://www.konstmuseum.goteborg.se/
Universeum (10 minutes walk from the congress)
is a brand new way of encountering science and technology,
with everything from sharks and a rain forest to fun experiments. Admission is free with the Göteborg Pass. Open Daily.
Ord. price: SEK 135
http://www3.universeum.se/index.php?lang=en
They have a great deal of animals at Universeum. Among others is a kind of minimonkey - Goeldi's monkey. There is a newborn babymonkey (yes one more since the website was created).
The museum of World Culture (just beside Universeum)
This is the place where you come face to face with the unexpected. A motley diversity of sincerity and depth, sharp design and experiemental scene art.Five exhibitions, free guided tours, children´s fairytails from the hammock.Free admission with the Göteborg Pass.
Ord. price: SEK 40
http://www.varldskulturmuseet.se/smvk/jsp/polopoly.jsp?d=126&skipIntro=1&l=en_US
This building is really impressive. If I where you I would go there and have lunch. Just sitting in the restaurang is worth paying for. The exhibitions varies - different themes all the time. High standard and in English.

Goace - how come you go for Gothenburg congress?
I mean it is not the most obvious place to go for a vacation - especially not this time of the year ;)
Just curious.

Great question... I just want to travel to Europe and this is as good time as any other, why is not this time of year, too cold?
Also will meet with DJ Frank there, he invited me last year but decided not to go last minute so here I come.
Here is my schedule (I want to make a short visit to a few countries!)
Getting to London on Wed morning, flying to Amsterdam right away and getting there about 6pm, what's good in Amsterdam?
Traveling by train on Thursday morning to Hamburg, Germany, anything good there?
Going from Hamburg to Denmark friday morning by train and ship to Gotenborg, is it good? should I just fly from Hamburg to Gotenborg?
After the congress is over I have nothing to do for a couple of days.... probably need to visit a few other cities!!
Any tips on my route or anything I need to know, thanks.
Whenever you're in Los Angeles, let me know!
Oh, yes... this is me so you know me before you meet me there:
http://www.myspace.com/gacevedo
You can also take the train from Hamburg all the way to Goteborg (although you might still need to change in Copenhagen). If you change trains in Copenhagen, you can change to the highspeed x2000 train to Goteborg.

High speed? wow... cool,
I was thinking on getting the global euro rail pass to go from city to city... is it good to get it ahead of time or just get it when I am there?
London? definetely on the way back... I am flying back from London to Los Angeles, so yes!!
Thanks for the info.

yes
I think you have the time, traveling by train is fun in itself, expecially the European trains are very comfortable.
The Van Gogh museum in Amsterdam and fish market on Sundays in Hamburg are my highlights. They are all vey cosy cities including Copenhagen, just walking aroung the cities centers are almost enough. You have to try pastries in Copenhagen.
As for the cost, check on the internet cause they have divided the countries by zones, so that might even help you select the cities you will go to.
Sounds like quite the fun trip!

It's better to get your Eurail pass *before* you arrive in Europe. The rule used to be that you couldn't buy it in Europe (since it's intended for visitors to Europe). Now it seems it's possible to buy it from some stations, but it's more expensive if you buy it in Europe. You can buy it online from the Eurail website.
London? definetely on the way back... I am flying back from London to Los Angeles, so yes!!
How about Edinburgh? ;) (OK not as exciting as London in terms of salsa, but it's a very nice city to visit.)

Depends on which days of the week you will be here and if anything special is happening that week/weekend.
I liked S.O.S. (which was, what, Sunday?) the one time I tried it.

Yep. Sunday, although I could be wicked and try and convince you that the S stands for Saturday ;)
If you were in DC or Atlanta, you'd think that it stood for Stuck on Salsa. (the name for a local promoter's brand/company)

It depends more on how lucky you are with the weather. You can get a nice sunny winter day -- or a week in summer with rain every day. It's lovely today, actually :D.

They have changed the scheudul - there are 10 minutes pause between classes. This will make it easier for people to go from one class to another (it was hard last year ...very crowded).
They have also made one more On-2 class for beginners (making us local not so very much after).
This class is held by Hacha & Machete - the ones I REALLY REALLY want to go for.

(there are more changed....do not have time to list them all)

You should NOT miss Hacha y Machete--they are awesome (and Burju is as sweet as can be). If you want body movement, she will give you what you want!
Wohoo! :bouncy: I will be at the classes too... I met the organizer for the congress today and she asked me if I should go to the congress and I said that I didn't have enough money for the classes. After calling someone she said that I could help them to put up the floor and then put it down and get the congress pass much cheaper. That sounded like a great idea so I said yes. :p See you at the classes too MacMoto!!! :D

I love the way people think they will be able to choose the weather they get in Britain. It came home to me when I was in Canada and the weather report showed a 600-mile long bank of cloud. "It will be cloudy for 3 days then sunny for 2".
This NEVER HAPPENS in Britain. Even the 5 day forecast changes daily. If a Canadian weather reporter had to forecast Britain s/he would say "changeable" every day forever.
Uh, and I like salsa. (hmm will they notice I went off topic a bit there...)

Getting to London on Wed morning,
Hi Ace! You packed yet? Remember to walk with only 'travel size' liquids in your hand luggage - oh, and just ONE piece of hand luggage :D - they are being pretty strict here in London. 'Once upon a time' a lady's handbag (not that I expect you to have one ;)) would be excluded from that count but not in today's travel environment. :(

Anyone woken up as yet, after spending the weekend dancing at this congress?
Yes...I woke up this morning. had vreakfast together with MacMoto (we shared room :)) asnd took the train home. Then I fell into my bed, woke up 2 hours later, had dinner and run for my salsaclass :O. Now I'm about to fall in bed once again.
A quick summary.
I had a great congress. Everything worked perfect...even the weather cooperated. Sun every day!
Shows was excellent. Teachers great - they where better at rotating partners than last year. 10 minutes break between every class was also great. Last year you had problems to get to and through different rooms. Transportation way too crowded.
I meet a lot of people from SF. I meet Goace for example but very briefly (Edie had almost killed him at the dancfloor a few seconds before ;)).
Now I have to sleep....get back later.
/Luc
I was feeling bad during the congress so I didn't dance much. I was dancing before the congress when I was not feeling well and it didn't make it any better... I would really have liked to dance more with MacMoto and attend the classes, but I couldn't. :( Atleast I got to meet some SFers and got a lot of inspiration. :D I'm shure I will meet MacMoto again sooner or later. Probably sooner because she is dancing salsa everywhere... LOL A funny thing is that we (MacMoto, lucretia and her family, a salsera from Gothenburg and me) ate lunch together during Saturday at the restaurant that I didn't remember... LOL (See previous page...) Now I remember the name and it's called Picasso...

I danced with pr (once), Capibaribe (twice but I've danced with him before :)), Supersoren (three songs in a row :D) and goace (once). I think I also danced with DjDuste but not sure. I stayed with lucretia, who was a great host. Thanks!
I enjoyed the congress very much. I managed to sit thought shows (10 groups each night) and there were some very good performances. I liked Ray Pradell's Bob Fosse tribute, which was beautifully danced by him and partner (can't remember her name -- Mira?). I didn't dance as much as I would have liked to at the parties (I wasn't dancing well either :() but still got plenty.
There were loads of workshops -- perhaps a bit too many. On Saturdays there were seven workshop slots from 10am - 6.30pm (4 options for each slot), with less than an hour's break for lunch, which wasn't enough. I ended up missing the first afternoon class, which I was looking forward to. Sunday had six slots (with even shorter lunch break), followed by a special seminar by Albert Torres on the history of salsa music. The seminar was very good, and it was a shame that more people didn't attend it (I got the impression that most of the people there were performers/teachers). This seminar came about because of the concern that dancers don't care about the music, and ironically it's poor attendance proved this right... AT finished the talk with a message to teachers to get their students interested in music, so I'll repeat it here for salsa teachers on DF.
Teachers,
Every time you play music in your class, tell your students what it's called and whose song it is. It only takes three seconds, and it helps your students become aware of the music. Tell students where they can buy the CD if they like the song. We tend to think only about dancing and not the music, but without music there can't be any dance, and we owe this to the musicians who gave us the great music we dance to.

I remember Albert Torres saying this during the last years congress too... :)

I wrote something similar on this over on Salsa Forums. The first congress I went to circa 1999, a lady by the name of Eileen Torres gave a talk and it was very good. She also gave a handout with a playlist type thing on it. I feel that attempts to raise the musical awareness have been fairly limited over the years precisely because 'dancers' would rather do classes than sit and listen to someone talking. The sad thing is, I do agree that by understanding some of the aspects of the music you will be a better dancer, yet, you only have to look around you to know that many people do not appear to share that view.

Hello all,
I had a wonderful time in Europe and especially on Gotenborg!! nonstop dancing for me, it was great to dance with so many people there.
I danced with MacMoto once, thank you. I met PR and Lucretia, and yes definitely your daughter is pretty cute!
I also danced with my friends Edie The SalsaFreak and Melissa Fernandez, it's always a pleasure to dance with the two of them!
