View Full Version : Midnight Blue or Ruby Red?

Let's suppose, there is a dress (floor length), that you absolutely love (yes, mainly question for the ladies ;)).
The price, is "perfect"! The problem? The colour. Would you choose Midnight Blue (ie. darkish blue) or Ruby Red, bearing in mind that summer is approaching and Ruby Red may be best for Autumn/Winter months?
Are there certain colours (other than black!) that you think are best kept for the Autumn/Winter months or the Spring/Summer months?

I'm really more partial to blue, but that is because of my own coloring.

strangely enuf, pacion, i have been deliberating between these two colors for my first gown for my 1st comp at the end of the month.
i want to pair the dominant color with gold accents, including a partially revealed gold-rhinestoned bra. have never worn midnight blue before, but it keeps finding its way back into my head... but ruby red would be so lovely with the gold...
weird that you pose the question at the same time i am wondering the same about those two shades. :) fwiw, i had decided to let my choice of available fabric drive the outcome...

 Thanks Chris! Not both because,
a) there isn't much room left in the wardrobe!
b) one colour will probably be worn more than the other rendering the other colour not so much of a bargin?
c) "studies show" that many items bought during the sales, no matter how perfect the price, rarely get worn and end up being thrown out? One colour would definitely be worn, two colours? :artsy:

Funnily enough, I am thinking that the midnight blue will show the gold better!

There have been previous discussions about wearing midnight blue on the comp floor, with many people thinking it didn't show up well under the lights (or something to that effect). I can't say that I really see many dark blue dresses at all at comps, much to my dismay. I think red stands out wonderfully on the floor, but due to the conflict of interest my hair has with red (I could probably only pull off a very close match to the actual color), I usually seek something else. In fact, I'm on the hunt for a dress at the moment, although not in a big hurry.

I agree. I prefer blue/gold to red/gold.

Actually, that's a point, from a comp perspective. Midnight blue will probably look like black in the distance. For a social event though? It didn't help that the male assistant said the Ruby looked good but a female customer said she preferred the Midnight Blue!

For me it'd be a coin toss--both are 2 of my favorite colors. And as for the blue looking like black--so much the better, IMHO.

As midnight blue is one of the two (barely distinguishable) tailsut colors, I would discourage that for competition use. The guy is stuck in effective black - you alone can add some color to the picture.

I agree with this. A midnight shade of blue may look like you had a near-miss with someone dressed in black. And even though I think black dresses can look absolutely killer on the floor, my eye is generally caught by something really bold and contrasting to what the man has on....like yellows, lime greens, mango, aqua. But, that's just mho. To each his own :)

I voted for Ruby Red just because I don't really look good in blue. ;)

So, lots of comments have been made in relation to comps. What about just a social event? :raisebro:
(Or don't DFers do those ;))

What? We DFers are to good for what you like to call social events lol!!! Just kidding. Actually, I would still like the red, because blue just washes me out. I have only one item of blue, and it's a sweatshirt my mom bought me, so I can't toss it lol. But yeah blue is still not my color. Jean wise yes... but otherwise nope lol!;)

you mean one of those comps where the organizer is too cheap to hire judges?

that's my take on it too. both look so pretty paired with gold, too... i could do numerous variations on that theme!
it being winter, i'm filled with visions all kinds of rich, jewel-tone, royalty-hued possibilities.

I agree. My hair was actually red when I was younger, so it's got that tint to it now. So, anything in the red, maroon etc. and even pink tones looks better on me. But I'm just strange like that I guess! ;)

I voted for Ruby Red. It works well for comps and social events.
I like Midnight Blue for social events, but not as much for comps. Had the choice been Royal Blue instead, I might have gone for this over the ruby red because the gold highlights could work very well with this, and perhaps better then the Ruby Red.

I just added an avator to my profile, of one of my favourite paintings, a scottish artist by the name of Jack Vettriano. After uploading it, I realised that the dress was/is white! For some reason, I remembered this thread and this post!
