A reliable electric or battery powered drill.
I second this one wholeheartedly!
I recently wanted to open up the cooling unit for my wine cellar to see if there was an obvious reason for why it wasn't doing such a good job keeping the cellar cool - and this is in wintertime! To open it, I had to drill out some rivets. I discovered that the charger for my Festool drill's batteries had given up the ghost, and the same had happened to either the charger or the batteries for my backup Makita drill. I felt so lost! :) I couldn't find my old corded drill, either.
I have since determined that the Makita's batteries were dead, as a new battery charges just fine. Now it's time to replace the other Makita battery and the Festool charger (I do love how that drill fits in my hand, and the various drill heads are just amazingly cool!). I also have a new cooling unit to install in the wine cellar sometime in the next week or so... which means many of my other tools will come in handy as well.
Life is slowly returning to normal :D

Was that a Freudian slip?
Like in last night's WCS class. Move was where the follow puts her hand on the lead's chest and "pushes" him back until he gets his spine back and push-breaks her back. Female instructor doing the lead. She tells the demo follow to pretend that she (the instructor) was a man. So the follow's hand goes straight for the "man"'s throat.

Yeah, the big challenge every single work night is having less than an hour to cook, eat, get ready, and rush off to dance class. Can't get too fancy there and there's no time to pick out a recipe to try.
I can usually wrangle out one free weekend a month, so I make a big batch of something (eg, spaghetti sauce, beef vegetable soup, frijoles) and then freeze it away so that I can use it during the month.

Hmm...I think I just met the male version of me.
I used to really enjoy cooking. Then I had kids. And I'm not a huge fan of mac and cheese and the stuff that appeals to my son (he's much pickier than my daughter, who will eat most anything....or at least try it). So, the stuff I used to cook doesn't fly with the picky one and I somewhat have to cater to him because he is of insufficient weight and less healthy overall than my daughter. The kid loves radishes, though....go figure....
Anyway, food has just become much less important to me over the years as my "free" time has dwindled. I'd eat popcorn for dinner if I was just cooking for me. And maybe a piece of fruit to wash it down with.

It's called a "dog house." It belongs, technically, to the "what every woman should own" list. Women bring with them into marriage this "dog house" and upon getting married, bequeaths it to her new husband. It's his home away from home.

Ditto, here.
I get home at 7pm. I'm too freakin' tired to really care, and I don't like cooking to begin with. Nor can I cook, really. It's just such a damn hassle, and I have yet to find something that takes longer to eat than it does to cook and clean up. At that point, it just isn't worth the effort.
DH and I are making an effort to eat in, and eat a real meal more often. Our goal is once a week, which should tell you something.
I've recently discovered the ease of steaming veggies--never tried that before--it really makes life easier. And salad (cut up all veggies when I buy them and put them in containers--makes life so much easier). I'm a big fan of making HUGE batches of stuff (chili, pasta sauce, mahogany chicken--still looking for other things), and freezing it in 2-person sized portions. Thank goodness for the extra freezer.

Yeah, I learned that from my wife early in our marriage, when I was on active duty. I went to school in the morning/afternoon, then returned home to change, eat, and report for duty from 1630 to midnight. She worked regular day hours. So every weekend she'd make a big meal, then divide what was left into individual servings and freeze it. Then I would microwave a serving for my dinner before going to work.
I've also found broiling fish in the toaster oven works well and is fairly quick. I line the pan with aluminum foil, so cleanup is easy. Costco sells frozen fish fillets that are individually packaged, so just put one in the fridge to thaw out overnight. My main problem is in being able to plan that far ahead.
Also, part of the idea of the "dummies" books is that the reader is a smart person who just lacks the basic common knowledge in that particular subject. A person starting to cook would not know some of the common terms and techniques used in recipes and so would need some kind of reference to find out what those are. For example, the first time I encountered "folding" was when I first made Kaiserschmarren; in that case I made an assumption and ended up having guessed right. Similarly, I had never before heard of "dredging" until I made chicken piccata; I don't remember how I finally figured that one out.
Peaches

My main problem is in being able to plan that far ahead. No kidding. We've got all kinds of stuff (chicken, turkey, beef, pork) which would be quick and easy enough to cook up...if one of us ever planned that far ahead and remembered to thaw it the night before.
For example, the first time I encountered "folding"...Not to mention, I believe there are actually two separate techniques described by that term...one as it pertains to mixing something into a batter without letting the incorporated air escape, the other as it pertains to the process of incorporating butter into pastry dough.

We don't need a corkscrew, you can use the portable screwdriver for that. Just drill a screw into the cork, and then use a hammer to remove it, gripping the screw. I've done that when I coudn't find the corkscrew, and continued with it later. It's...much more elegant that way.

Aye. Our Wed night WCS venue got pre-empted so they gave us Saturday night, 17 Mar. I've normally opted out of wearing green, maintaining that since I actually am Irish (well, half) I don't have to act like those wanna-bes. But since I'll be helping out, I can't be out-of-uniform. And since I never wear green and so have absolutely no green clothing (except for the aforementioned 25-year-old pickle suit) I'm going have to try to find something.
Is sage a dark green?
And since I'm half Scottish, shouldn't I be looking for orange as well? [grin]

Sage is a mid-tone green, usually with some gray shading to it.
Have you tried LLBean? I know they've got polos and button-downs and whatnot, and I know they have green stuff. (Just checked.)
I could try, but I'm not sure where they have a store around here.
During the week, all the stores are closed by the time I get out of dance class. Then on some of the weekends I might have some small windows of opportunity, so if I need to go out shopping I want to be fairly sure of finding what I'm after. So far I've been trying in vain for over a couple months to find a replacement pair of dockers (the cell phone holster keeps wearing a hole in the side; it would be nice if I could find a decent holster, but in two years of looking I haven't found one) and to replace a shirt (polo with a pocket) that got ruined by an open pen. Kohl's had a good selection of the shirts (the only place I could find any) but now even that's shrunken to near zero. Maybe I'll try Sears. Mervyn's didn't have anything before.
PS
Just checked. All LLBean stores are back east. Won't do me any good.

We don't need a corkscrew, you can use the portable screwdriver for that. Just drill a screw into the cork, and then use a hammer to remove it, gripping the screw. I've done that when I coudn't find the corkscrew, and continued with it later. It's...much more elegant that way.

men and sheds : the book!
Synopsis:
"It has been said that a shed is to a man what a handbag is to a woman - both contain all the essentials for surviving in the modern world and in the same way that no decent man would ever consider looking in a woman's handbag uninvited, so no reasonable woman would dream of setting foot in a man's shed. This book is a study of over 40 men and their sheds around the UK, a quirky look at the personalities and the passions hidden within the shed, whether it is used for eccentric inventions, as a chapel, a housing for a milk bottle collection, an allotment shed, a home for exotic reptiles or a place to make music. The fascinating story of each bloke and his shed is accompanied by photographs of the inner sanctum and of the customized exteriors. "

I seem to recall a thread a year or two ago on this subject.
A shed in the US is normally a small windowless affair that is only fit to store gardening tools; no sane person would want to spend any length of time in one.
A shed in the UK is a much larger and more appealing. I believe that some include a greenhouse. It is where a man keeps his work bench and where a man can work -- or tinker -- on his various projects.
In the US, a man's workbench is normally in the garage or in the cellar.

first he popped out "swiss army knife" right away...then he began this agonizing struggle to think of manly man items....er...tooolbox...he says next....then he's stumped and goes silent...and I'm like "dude, it's a silly little question just let it fly , give your own answers not the stereotypical ones"...so he sheepishly says, "YOU?"...now okay, that earns him some brownies....then he just lays there agonizing like it's a million dollar case hanging in the balance....and I'm laughing at this point and saying, "forget it, it's just not worth it"...but after I mentioned his newpaper and his Qmobile he started warming up, and contributed also his ipod, his stereo, his symphony tickets, his reading room(nerd shed)...his fireplace (man must have fire, even nerd man)...and the city of chicago which he loves, also his star wars and star trek movies and his astronomical binoculars...mainly the stuff I already guessed and posted on here but which he isn't in touch enough with himself to figure out without an hour of agonizing...I love him
Great list.
If you subtract out the knife and toolbox, and count the Star Trek and Star Wars movies as one he is down to 10. :D

I liked the nerd fire bit, but this was my favorite part. Nerd sheds, heh. Especially funny since DH has wanted a library since before I met him. Really, really wanted a library. Nerd shed...we turned our "formal dining room" into a wine, smoke and reading room...book shelves, bistro table, full wall floor to ceiling wine rack, humidor(for his occasioanal cigar)...telescope, cuckoo clock, globe, chess set...two overstuffed chairs and footstools....it's his play pen...anyone who eats here can eat in the kitchen...not fancy but plenty big

Very cool. Most guests seem to enjoy eating more in the kitchen anyway--more friendly and relaxed.

Just glanced through thread, but I did pretty well. Not surprising, considering how manly I am. THat being said, let me get back to my baking. ;)

Get back in the kitchen, you! And take off those damn shoes! Gotta shorten that chain...
(Thinking of horrible sexist joke which is also funny in a very wrong way.)
Too bad he can't be pregnant.

So I'm attempting to revive this thread with a shaving question.
So what do you guys use? Or ladies, what do your favorite guys use?
I am debating going from electric to something more old school. I'm not sure about the whole cut-throat razor. I shave my whole head, so I imagine doing the back of my neck would be insane. I guess the next step up would be the safety razor.
Thoughts?

electric, but I don't clean shave, I leave it scruffy, so electric is perfect

Here's a crazy thought... what about the old school brush and lather, combined with a modern wet electric?

as long as the dude is clean shaven...I don't care
I'm a proponent of the old school brush and lather with the cut-throat, have been using one for just over a year now(with only a few scars )
You can do the whole head and neck, you just have to go cautiously
You mean a straight razor?

I WANT a nerd shed.
Added to the list of things I want in a house, along with a fire and a spa.

Heh...yup. I tend to only date other nerds, because non-nerds find me scary.
So yeah, nerds are great.
